Hi there! It's being some time since coming back from France, but I'm catching up. There's a new link for "LSM 2005", and there's a video URL for those interested. Ah, Philippe De Swert, made a Debian package for x86 with dillo-0.8.5. It is available from the downloads page. Please let the Debian guys know so they can get it, and try it, tell them to report back here in case the package needs some polishing. It's being a lot of work with these conferences. I'll report here more news when we sort out what to do in the near future. The FLTK2-based prototype is not ready yet for CVS and this is one of the things we're deciding on with Sebastian. Diego: please check and send me the cookies patch to upload it to the CVS (and to merge with the prototype). The server was down several days because it was hacked. Now it's working normally again, reinstalled on another machine. This probably explains why it was so hard to get in touch with it. :-) -- Cheers Jorge.-

[Dillo-dev]Meta-refresh warning

While using dillo to check some pages for AnyBrowser-friendliness, I've encountered the warning inserted whenever a <meta http-equiv="refresh" ...> tag is used. I interpreted this as meaning that the HTML I'd written was in some way wrong, and I should find another way to achieve the same effect. The warning says: This page uses the NON-STANDARD meta refresh tag. The HTML 4.01 SPEC\n" " (sec 7.4.4) recommends explicitly to avoid it. I checked that part of the HTML spec to see exactly what it said, and whether it suggested any better alternatives. However, all that section has to say about the use of "refresh" is: ( http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/global.html#h-7.4.4 ) Note. Some user agents support the use of META to refresh the current page after a specified number of seconds, with the option of replacing it by a different URI. Authors should not use this technique to forward users to different pages, as this makes the page inaccessible to some users. Instead, automatic page forwarding should be done using server-side redirects. My understanding of that paragraph is that it's only recommending against redirection, in which the refresh tag specifies that a different page should be loaded after the timeout. It might additionally mean that it's only discouraged for "instant" (ie. delay=0) redirection. OTOH, refreshing the same page (which is what I'm trying to do with the page that I'm writing) should be OK. In this case, shouldn't dillo only complain if the "content" part of the tag contains a "URL=" (even if it won't handle the refresh without the aid of the meta-refresh patch)? I can write the necessary trivial patch to insert such a check if people agree that it's The Right Thing, but I thought I'd better check that I've interpreted the spec properly (and am reading the right bit of it) before I do so. Hi to all, this little patch adds a command line option ( -R --rcfile) to specify an alternative rcfile from the command line. This is useful if you are calling dillo from scripts or other applications and you need to enable/disable some options for a particular task. The patch is against dillo 8.5. I'm a dillo user, not a developer, but I sat down one day to write a quick patch to get dillo to let me quickly view PDF files because I read lots of them from the web. So I wrote a program called quick and then I wrote a patch to get dillo to call quick when it's a file that quick can open. I'm happy with the benefit, but this is not a patch for dillo, it's just a hack to get me happy (I didn't use glib, for example.) I wanted to drop you guys this message to tell you guys that there's one user who would like such feature in dillo and I should perhaps ask you guys how you would build such feature in dillo if you were to sit down today and do it. Who knows? I could do it myself, if it won't be too complicated. I also wanted to say thanks. Hello, i have found that the problem was in https dpi. Under some circunstances, self signed certificate and formated in some way, the https dpi died. I send a patch to fix it. The patch is for dillo 0.8.5 but surely it works in previous versions, only touches dpi/https.c, it works with or without cookies.dpi patch, whitout cokies.dpi patch only the first dillo have cookies. I send a this mail with cc to the list to make it,the new(and the fix), public so the people can test it ASAP. Hi, i have problems with dillo on sparc64. When using a mechanism of OpenBSD 's malloc i'm able to detect a bug in the dpi stuff. At the moment i've found that the function Dpi_append_io_buf() in the file src/IO/dpi.c is wrong. The following line is reallocating a buffer: conn->Buf = g_realloc(conn->Buf, (gulong)io->Status); But when debugging the values of io->Status don't seem to be adequate. I haven't been able to completely fix it as the code is seriously lacking of comment. To be honest i don't even completely understand what this chunk is doing and the code is so unreadable that it doesn't help (not to be harsh but just to give my humble opinion). Damien

Hello, now that i have some free time i want to test the cookies dpi over https like Jorge suggested. I need the server so i ask to the webmaster if he can mount some https pages with cookies for the test, like Jorge suggested too. About other things and thinking about the future, i have some ideas about DPI framework and DPIs that can be useful, maybe. Register and init DPIs I think that the way that gives more adventages is to let dpid manage this using dpidrc to store the list of available DPIs(updated each time dpid is runned with the installed DPIs in the system and in the HOME/.dillo/dpi directory), and the metadata about DPIs: mime types or protocol that manages that DPI, menu entries or buttons that DPIs need and the more important if a user wants use(enabled) that DPI or not(disabled) dpidc need new commands (enable, disable, list DPIs) and individual register of DPIs(dpidc register directory/where/the/new/DPI/is) When a new DPI is register dpid run the DPI and ask the DPI metadata which a new DPI command(<dpi cmd='give_metadata'> ?) and the DPI returns the metadata in a text key-value format, for example a dpi that converts rtf and pdf files to html can send postfix_understand=rtf,pdf mime_understand=text/x-rtf,text/x-pdf (with the right mime type of course) After this dpid stores the metadata in dpidrc file. For example: DPI=rtf_pdf_viewer state=enabled or disabled or ... postfix_understand=rtf,pdf mime_understand=text/x-rtf,text/x-pdf And now three ways to get the new metadata in dillo or the DPIs that understand them: 1) The pasive solution. when a DPI start it read the dpidrc searching the metadata that it understand. (A DPI that manages mime types, so dillo do not need to do it, can make a list with the name and mimes that understand each DPI) 2) Active, but silly one. Dpid re-send the metadata to each other DPI, with a new DPI command, and each DPI redo his internal state with the metadata it understand. This is the worst solution because dpid need to run all DPIs to be sure that metadata arrives to the right DPI. 3) The complex and flexible solution, my prefered one. There is a key-value(send_me) in the DPIs metadata to register keys of metadatas. Dpid understand this key(send_me) and have a internal list to send the metadatas to the right DPI. If a DPI send a key registered with the send_me key while registering, dpid sends the change to the DPI that registered that key so it can update its internal data, caches, whatever. Example: A mime DPI manages the files with mime types unknows to dillo. When it register send this metadata and is stored in dpidrc like part of its metadata send_me=mime_understand Then after the rtf_pdf_viewer DPI is registered, and if it is enabled, dpid send to the mime DPI the DPI=rtf_pdf_viewer mime_understand=text/x-rtf,text/x-pdf and mime DPI updates its state so it can call rtf_pdf_viewer when find a rtf or pdf file. Pros: - It is so flexible that new keys and resources can be used by new DPIs while dpid, or even dillo in some case, do not need to be updated to understand it. - Do not need to modify dillo internals or few Cons: - Dpid, dpidc and DPIs need to be modified - And more, sure Protocols and mime DPIs Based in the xproto DPI i think that a DPI can manage all the protocols and mime formats that dillo do not understand. Dillo simply passes the url or stream(or file location) to that DPI when it do not understand the format and the DPI using a list call the right DPI, script, wathever to manage it. That last DPI open an app, return a data in format that dillo understand(html, gif, jpg, png), etc. Image/objets html tags can call the protocol_and_mime_DPI, with some care and a especial dpi tag, so new formats can be viewed in dillo, if a DPI converts them to formats understanded by dillo, in the right place in the page. A interesting idea is to can embed apps, like sylpheed embed dillo, in the space of a image or object with new tags and/or pasing the WID. The protocol_and_mime_DPI send a html page to dillo when there is more than a DPI or action, download included, for a protocol or mime to ask the user what to do, set default action, etc Pros: - All code is outside dillo - Compatible with all Cons: - Can need news dpi tags - And more, sure HTML GUI When dillo support frames(The only think because i do use an old dillo 0.8.0 patched with frames sometimes is because it have frames)/iframe/objects(this tag can include html to, but frames are better) the dillo GUI can be a html page, with a iframe that contains the viewed web page, and a DPI that modifies the GUI html page. The new thing is that the DPI can use a cache file with that html page that dillo loads at start so dillo init is as fast as now, only loading the DPI when needed. All DPIs that generate html must use the same CSS so all have the same look. Pros: - Make dillo core small - Look is fully configurable - DPIs can register menus and buttons and dillo do not need even to know or have the list of buttons or menus registered in mem an in each dillo Cons: - Need to add remote control dpi tags to dillo - And more, sure Adding all Only frames, and new dpi tags need to be done in dillo core and it gives, when the DPIs needed and dpid are done, a very flexible interface to cordinate DPIs and for example that the DPIs GUI elements can be implemented step by step based on funcionality without touching dillo internals and not all at same modifing dillo core or doing it unestable. Only some ideas. If somebody wants to disscuss them, destroy them, blame about my english or me and my sleep state at this time i have my e-mailbox and eyes open to read all of them. Hi there, The release candidate one tarball for 0.8.5 is ready for testing. Please get it from: http://www.dillo.org/download/dillo-0.8.5-rc1.tar.bz2 This code has had a lot of testing so emphasis is on the build/compile process on the different platforms and on the file dpi. Hi Kelson, If you want to build RPMs, it looks like rc1 will become 0.8.5 so you only need to change configure.in: -AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(dillo, 0.8.5-rc1) +AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(dillo, 0.8.5) Unless somebody reports an error, I plan to officially announce it tomorrow. But I found such patch works only for some double-byte website, whose encoding is UTF-8; and lots of double-byte site still can't be rendered correctly, :( Maybe FLEK-based dillo will solve it... Hi, i send a small patch to make the file.dpi a little more intuitive than now. The patch make that when one person write only "file:" in the dillo location bar it show the current working directory, like previous dillo file: handlers, instead to show nothing, like now. I have think all side effects that the changes can have and test it. The patch is for the current cvs, but works in previos dillo versions. Can we have something like this? I know it is not done yet, but there are some things I would like to see. For example, gcc-4.0 on amd64 treats this as an error void *tmp; int i = (int)tmp; I would hate to have to debug it later, so it would be nice to have fltk version od dillo while it is still "young", and try to patch things. I do have both compilers, but sooner or later, people will have to patch it on SuSE, Slackware or whatever distro they have. Why not making it correct right now? Thanx. :o) -- Pinguin? Daemon? Fish? Dragon fly? Grow up. Windows are the future, daemons and animals are for fairy tales.

Hi there! A long time since the last post right? Well, don't worry, as always, a silent dillo-dev list means lots of stuff going on behind the scenes! I'm preparing the dillo-0.8.5 tarball now. This will hopefully be the last GTK1-based dillo to be released, as the next one will be FLTK2-based. The plan is to show a strong protoype in Dijon at the LSM 2005, and have it shortly thereafter ready for public consumption (after a play/test/fix/stabilize cycle on dillo-dev). Back to dillo-0.8.5: this release is mainly a bug-fix release. The final touches were just uploaded to current CVS. Please download it, test, and report back to the list on how it works. This will help me to make the tarball and release it ASAP. As currently I'm working on three source trees, getting rid of this one will certainly relieve my workload. The second tree is a rewrite of the plugin stuff under a cleaner design that's to be included in the FLTK2-tree. -- Cheers Jorge.-

I have dillo set as my default browser. It opens all right when I click on a full URL in an email, but if what's there just starts with www, leaving off the http://, it fails. Other browsers can figure that out -- as can dillo if I type it into the location field. Why not by clicking? These patch files work fine with some other languages including Korean, Russian, and Japanese than European languages(LATIN-1). These patches work well with dillo 0.80.4 to 0.80.5-pre (CVS). searching cookies bugs in bugtrack y have found and try this 3 bugs Bug #364: Seems that it is corrected so the bug can be deleted. I want to tell that people need to be carefull when put a rule and write a url in the location bar: if one write the url without the www, a.org instead www.a.org for example, the page can load but will not match with a rule .a.org in cookiesrc. Another thing is that if the page send a cookie for www.a.org and you put in the location location bar a.org the cookie will not match and will not be send. Bug #370: I do not see a php register in that page ¿can anybody put another example? Bug #617: Cookies.dpi suffers this bug too. Another thing: In the patch i send to make cookies a dpi the line 38 of dillo/src/cookies.c says #define DEBUG_LEVEL 1 /*8*/ and must be #define DEBUG_LEVEL 8 One more thing: ¿have try anybody the cookies dpi patch? ¿what do he or she think? ¿have anybody found a bug? One curiosity: If you have a page that point with a link to another page loaded(yet) in the dillo cache and click the link to go to the page, the page loads in that way that if the 2 pages have the same decorations and are both at top seems that only content, not the decoration, of the page have change, but if you used the back and forward buttons you see how the page change. Example open a new dillo(you are in the splash page), go to a directory (file:/etc/), click in a directory of that directory(file:/etc/X11/),go back with the button and see how the page redraws, now click again in the same directory(file:/etc/X11/) and see how the page changes without seeing the redraw. It works in http pages while they are in the cache. It seems that it is because the a_Nav_push of the page happen in a gtk signal. I think this can be interesting to a possible dpi that managed the dillo file menus and buttons interface with a html page so updates can be transparent. Hello. I like dillo proyect and i want to help in its develop. I have look at the current plans list of dillo developers and i think i can code the "Medium priority" "Make cookies into a dpi server" task. Is somebody intersted in it too? If we are more the work can be done fast an it is less to every one. I want to start a short talk in the list before coding it. what features do this task need-not need? I think that a good change can be to use the netscape-mozilla-firefox-galeon-etc cookies file format. So some utilities can work better with dillo. For example wget can use cookies in this format and wget is used by dillo. Or even use a external program that exist yet to manage cookies. (gtkcookie for example. Is the SSL-enabled version of dillo-0.8.4 up to managing SourceForge accounts? I'm on the login page at <URL:https://sourceforge.net/account/login.php> but when I click the "Login with SSL" button the page just blinks at me as if I'd refreshed the it. I don't get logged in. Hi there! Here are some good news with our current progress in porting dillo to FLTK. It has being going-on very fast and we have made great progress so far. An image is worth a thousand words, so look here: http://www.dillo.org/test/ph1.png That's Dillo with a FLTK GUI, and with a Dw over FLTK too! Note the antialiased text. We're still in the process of getting the GTK object model out of Dillo (so we don't need to link with gtk). The IO engine is also running natively over FLTK. There's still some work to do on the UI and Dw is going C++. The rest of dillo will remain in C. We're also cleaning up the sources design. Once we get to a more complete prototype, it will need some polishing and testing. At that time it'll be uploaded so everyone can help. Technical note: we're using FLTK 2.0 from CVS. Hello Guys, First of all, congratulations on the excellent work achieved on dillo. Sadly I was only introduced to dillo recently, however I now use it every day for about 1-2 hours browsing CVSWEB. I love the way bookmarks are handled! On to more important topics, I have a strange problem which I dont understand. I believe it could possibly be dillo related. I am currently using Dillo 0.8.4 for your information. The problem is strange. A few websites I browse on a regular basis cannot be viewed. I get the error: ERROR: No route to host. However, I can ping and view these websites using another browser. An example of a website I cannot view is: www.netbsd.org/ The system dillo is on currenly runs DragonFly BSD following the Stable tag. Whats really strange is I can ping and view these websites using other means =/ Hope someone can shead some light on to my problem. If anymore information is needed, please ask! Regards, -- - Liam J. Heya. New here. Glad someone's working on Dillo. Hope it comes full-featured like Firefox is with less than half the bloat! I'm attaching a fixed patch for 0.8.4 that allows meta-http refreshes. This is quite common with web chats (including Tag-Board). I've test-compiled and ran it, and so far so good. Is there any reason Dillo is still building against the GTK+ 1.2 libraries as opposed to 2.0 ? I'm not sure what it would break to build against the 2.0 libs, but I would really like to start building against them so I can add the clipboard code that i've had my eye on ;) I don't think the size would grow _that_ much, and I think the benefits would be large from using 2.0. Right now, the only difference I can see would be in the autoconf files, GTK+ 2.0 uses pkg-config to supply the correct cflags and ldflags, while GTK+ 1.2 uses gtk-config. Ideas, suggestions? -R. Hi everyone, I have made a small change to dillo-0.8.4, so I can put a line like scroll_factor=0.5 in my dillorc and get the old behaviour for scrolling a page. It would be great if this could be included in the dillo distribution, so I don't have to patch my source every time I build a new version. I know that the current effort is the port to FLTK. Dear developers, thanks for dillo. As I sometimes use a more (or less) feature-rich webbrowser than dillo, I 'outsourced' the caching of web pages (to squid). In a previous Debian package of dillo, I could turn off the internal web cache with cache_size=00 in .dillo/dillorc. With version 0.8.3, I get the error dillorc:23: unexpected string constant "cache_size", expected symbol and every dillo process uses > 5 MiB of memory. What could I do to turn off (or limit) the internal cache? Was the cache_size option in the debian package an unofficial patch? I would really like to see this patch in the mainstream, as I am short on RAM here... PS: This is a re-post. Hello ! I found another bug or problem in dillo : It doesn't use all the space provided ! For example, let's take a 320x240 screen/window (in full screen mode). If your content takes more than 305-310 pixels wide, the scrollbars are appearing, while they only should appear if your content is larger than "window size less borders", like 316... Hi, I have a theoretical question, as follows. What would be needed for Dillo to support javascript ? Of course it would need a javascript interpreter, but there are also issues about variables and how to handle stuff like mouseover and such in the rest of the code. Is there any possibility that the dpi interface would suffice for a task like this ? ( what I mean here is if there is a possibility to somhow use it for this functionality, perhaps 'filtering' the pages through it or something ? ). Hello, For some time now i'm looking for an XML browser, witch is simply able to show XML documents. XML capable browsers that exist today do not suit my (and others who extencively use XML) needs. Their XML implementation is based on top of their html implementation, witch makes it incapable of many standard XML features and also makes them bloated. During my search I began to cave into the dillo source, and found the dillo widget system. Witch seems to be a good rendering system for digital documents, not just html. XML parsers already exist (libxml for example), and parsing XML is a lot easier than parsing html, because it has a much more strict syntax. An XML browser, maybe more acuratly named an XML viewer, is just as abstract as XML itself. It has no way to know how a partucular XML document has to be show'ed. For this purpose XSLT exists, it is able to "translate" any XML document into another. Thus creating a XML viewer is limited to being able to render one particular type of XML document, and having XSLT documents available to translate the rest. Luckily something like glade exists. Glade is an GUI development kit, using XML to describe the GUI's, and GTX+ to show them. Dillo widgets are an extention to GTK+, meanig glade can show them. Leaving the "problem" to creating the XSLT stylesheets te translate documents to glade-XML. The dillo widget is currently inside the dillo source, and only linked directly to dillo. how posible is it to seperate this, and have dillo widget inside a .so for example? As such an XML browser is not really aimed at the same goals als the dillo project (as far as i've read, correct me if i'm wrong), i'd apriciate the dillo widget into a seperate library. this way dillo and this XML browser both can use the same dillo widget system, without forcing me to include dw vith the XML browser. (and sync them constantly) I'm still only planning, so i'd like any comments on this idea, as well as tips and other ideas. maybe you also have comments on the level of integration dillo and the XML browser can have. I hadn't actually tried using Gmail with Dillo before, but I just heard that Gmail recently implemented a "plain html" version and would thus work on any browser. That inspired me to try it with Dillo and sure enough it works. Maybe it always did, but it certainly does now. :-) Jonathan

Hello ! I don't know if I didn't find which HTML tags were supported by dillo, or if it is a dillo bug or limitation, but I am totally unable to make dillo center something on the screen. I want to center an image, but centering the table containing the image or centering the contents in the table cell don't work. And I don't even speak about vertical centering. I even tryed with onepixel images, streched with <img width="20"> for example. Doesn't see to work either. Therefore my question is : How to achieve that (having dillo centering an image). Hi there, I'm in Europe these days! At this time FOSDEM 2005 is history, and Dillo was there (embedded track). We had a lot of work with Sebastian and presented Dillo succesfully! The conference was informative and entertaining so people liked it very much. Now I'm in Dortmund and we're working hard with Sebastian on a CVS based prototype with the new Abstraction Layer, so don't expect much emails these days. All the pending work is stalled as we're 100% on this, so patches, extensions, bug-fixes etc will have to wait. Eventually we will come with a renewed Dillo design that provides for stronger basis for the future (think of FLTK, CSS, utf8, text antialiasing, better rendering, etc). -- Cheers Jorge.-

It would be nice if we lived in a world without MSIE (Microsoft Internet Explorer) In particular, it would be nice if we lived in a world without MSIE's broken CSS. For example, there is a wonderful CSS attribute, called max-width, that lets a user specify the maximum width for a given element. Should the user have a narrow window (can you say 640x480), the element in question will just become narrower to fit this window. However, MSIE does not have support for this attribute. This is a feature that only 10% of the browsing population can make use of. The workaround looks like this: <table><tr> <td width=700> The content of a web site. </td></tr></table> The way all the mainstream browsers (MSIE, Opera, Konqueror/Safari, and all the Gecko browsers) handle this is as follows: * They consider the <td width=123> to be a suggestion. This is the maximum possible width for the element in question, as long as the table cell does not have any single elements (such as very long words) that are wider. * If the browser window (viewport) is wide enough to fit this element with the suggested width, the width is unchanged. * If the browser window is not wide enough to fit this element, the table cell will be made narrower to accomodate the narrow browser window. Dillo, however, does not support this /de facto/ standard. The following patch gives Dillo support for this standard. This patch doesn't do the rendering the correct way (which is to make sure all such TDs are not wider than the browser viewport window, barring long table elements), but it does make sure that a single table cell will not be wider than the Dillo browser window. Hello, To compile Dillo-0.8.4 with Sun C compiler under Solaris 9, I had to apply the attached patch. It appears that Dillo code uses some GCC features that are not in the C language specifications. With my correction, it compiles and seems to work, but there are still many warnings. I haven't tested my patch with GCC or under another OS. good day! i would like to ask for your help. i am a computer science student and currently, doing my thesis. i, together with my group mates is implementing a system in linux that enables to add plug-ins (a plug-in can be an application or a functionality of the system) using shared objects. If we are to add, for example, an existing application in our system it has to be in the .so form. Dillo is one of the examples we considered to add in our system. It is also one way of testing if the plug-in function we are implementing really works. Regarding the dillo browser, we tried to make it as a shared object file using the command line "gcc -g -shared -Wl,-soname,dillo.so.0 \-o dillo.so dillo.o -lc" the problem is there are certain methods that cannot be recognized when we run the shared object that is produced using our system. those methods are undefined according to the system. We do not know if the paths of the libraries used by dillo have something to do with the error... or something else. we would like to ask if our way of making a shared object file is correct or applicable to dillo. if not, can u tell us how to make it as a shared object file - the proper way of making a shared object file. Also, can u let us know how to compile dillo manually, without using the make file. if you also have an advice regarding the problem/solution to the problem, we would appreciate it very much. thank you very much, sir. - jen __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi guys, This weeks have taken a hectic pace for me, finishing and taking care of a lot of issues has been the workload of each day. Now almost everything is ready for FOSDEM 2005 and a very long trip. The point: ;) I'm gathering more data to tune and enrich some points of the conference. The skeleton is: Presentation contents: * What's Dillo * Project objectives * Compatibility/Portability Dillo on PDAs: iPAQ, Yopi, Psion (familiar). uclibc * Architecture overview: Parser/Rendering/IO/Plugins * Current state of the project: Supported standards Features HTML bug meter Memory usage: Comparison table with other browsers by VSZ/RSS. CPU usage: Comparative wall-clock times for page rendering. * Near future potential The port to FLTK Antialiased fonts, UTF-8, more speed, smaller footprint, rendering to abstract devices.
