Hi all! Dillo 0.8.5 doesn't compile "out-of-the-box" with Compaq's C Compiler on FreeBSD/Alpha. The Dillo source code seems to be quite portable and clean as it is, so only very minor changes were necessary to make it build and run. It's probably a very uncommon compiler scenario, but I thought I'd still share this with the list. Perhaps it is of interest to someone. 1. src/dw_embed_gtk.h, line 27: /*gboolean child_size_request_lock*/; CCC doesn't like the semi-colon being outside the comment. Moving it inside allows the compilation to continue. 2. Lines 379-380 in src/dw_widget.h do not work with CCC. #define a_Dw_iterator_unhighlight(it, l) ((it) ? \ (it)->highlight(it, -1, -1, l) : FALSE) highlight() seems to return a void, which is not the same type as FALSE. I am not sure what the correct solution would be, but changing line 380 into the following will at least allow the compilation continue: ((it)->highlight(it, -1, -1, l), TRUE) : FALSE) 3. Line 134 in src/html.c. CCC says 'The static declaration of "Tags" is a tentative definition and specifies an incomplete type. (incompstat)' Removing the 'static' so that the line reads just const TagInfo Tags[]; allows the compilation to continue. (Note that the actual definition of static const TagInfo Tags further down in html.c does _not_ need to be changed!) So far so good. With these modifications, LIBPTHREAD_LIBS="-lc_r" CC=ccc CFLAGS="-mcpu=pca56 -fast -O4 -g3" ./configure; make builds everything. However, Dillo crashes when run. I spent some time trying to track down what causes this, and it seems to be the debug macros. CCC gives about a million warnings about these, looking like this: cc: Warning: file.c, line 42: This parameter is not preceded by a comma. (missingcomma) #define _MSG(fmt...) ----------------^ cc: Warning: file.c, line 905: Too few actual parameters in the invocation of the macro "MSG". (toofewactuals) MSG("file.dpi:: Failed to parse 'url'\n"); and so on. Apparently, either CCC is flawed in this regard, or the MSG macros were not written cleanly enough. Modifying src/msg.h and src/debug.h so that all MSG and DEBUG_MSG macros simply become empty statements, also changing the BW_MSG define in src/IO/http.c into an empty definition "avoids" the problem, Dillo seems to run fine, but of course there will be no debug output. :-/ The compiler version I used was "V6.4-005 on Linux 2.4.2 alpha", and the host OS was FreeBSD/Alpha 4.9. Perhaps some of these modifications could apply to the current CVS tree as well, and not just 0.8.5, but I haven't had time to check. Anders

The new cookie dpi has a minor compilation problem in DragonFly-BSD and probabely other BSDs as well. The following modifictaion solves the problem. Hi, I have dillo installed on cgywinX. When I try to logon to the yahoo mail site, it errors out and reports "can't start dpid daemon". I also see "dpid tag is null" in the message. Using Frames in dillo 0.8.6pre

Hello. First of all I want to thank everybody working on dillo web browser, i really like it. Now my question. I remeber having tabbed browsing and frame support within dillo 0.85 from the gentoo ebuild. Now i'm trying 0.86pre from cvs and can't find any option for this. Maybe i'm to blind to find it in the INSTALL or ./configure --help. Is there any possibility to use tabbed browsing and frame support within dillo 0.8.6pre. Thank you and best regards Hans

Hello Dillo Developers. I tried dillo and found good. Thanks for your effort. Do you need my impression? No? umm.. Anyway, my wish list from just a few hours experience are ... 1. Integrate this -> http://teki.jpn.ph/pc/software/ Especially, - Internationalization - Frame support - Referer these are necessary. 2. Animated GIF!!! this is necessary. I felt Dillo is good for KIOSK use, but without animated gif, common web business model, in short, advertising, does not work. Nothing works without a business model, right? 3. FLTK and UTF-8 support. Among the stuff already on your wishlist, this is the most desired for me. 4. It is very difficult issue that you should add javascript or not. I am working on a linux, gtk based smart phone platform. applications manager, phone, sms, contact, mediaplayer are ok now using ipaq and wireless pack. now I am working on gprs and dillo. maybe in the future, I will open source the code. this is the screen shot. Hi, I just installed dillo cygwinX. When I try to use yahoo mail, I get "cant start dpid daemon". I try stopping the dpid, but it still gives me the same error. Is yahoo mail supported by dillo? Cross Compiling Dillo Error Messages

Hi Guys, Im planning to cross compile dillo to my target FR-V board. I already cross compiled gtk+-2.2.4 and already tested the sample program to the target. Currently, Im starting to cross compile dillo-0.8.5-i18n-misc-20050719. This is the patch version of dillo to display japanese characters. When Im trying to configure the dillo for cross compilation, It tries to find the gtk-config and glib-config from my target bin directory which is not found. Im trying to copy the said files from my host bin to my target bin and edit the target location of the scripts to my target. The configure options i initially tried is this: ./configure --prefix=/opt/gtk --host=frv-linux-gnu --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --with-jpeg-lib=/opt/gtk/lib --with-jpeg-inc=/opt/gtk/include --with-glib-prefix=/opt/gtk --with-glib-exec-prefix=/opt/gtk --with-gtk-prefix=/opt/gtk --with-gtk-exec-prefix=/opt/gtk LIBZ_LIBS=/opt/gtk/lib LIBJPEG_LIBS=-L/opt/gtk/lib --without-libintl-prefix --without-libiconv-prefix The cross configure now detects it and successfully surpass the configure command. However, it does not detects the png and jpeg which is I successfully cross compiled already. when Im trying to issue a make command, it seems that it does not find gtk.h. When I try to issue a configure like this: ./configure --prefix=/opt/gtk --host=frv-linux-gnu --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --with-jpeg-lib=/opt/gtk/lib --with-jpeg-inc=/opt/gtk/include --with-glib-prefix=/opt/gtk --with-glib-exec-prefix=/opt/gtk --with-gtk-prefix=/opt/gtk --with-gtk-exec-prefix=/opt/gtk LIBZ_LIBS=/opt/gtk/lib LIBJPEG_LIBS=-L/opt/gtk/lib --without-libintl-prefix --without-libiconv-prefix LDFLAGS=-L/opt/gtk/lib CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/gtk/include It finds my gtk.h and the said error on gtk.h disappear. i was surprised when i figured out that the current dillo code doesn't support any sort of "no cache" or "expires" facility. it seems that this was done in 2003, in a patch referenced here: http://lists.auriga.wearlab.de/pipermail/dillo-dev/2003-August/001039.html i tried applying it, and resolving the (many) differences myself, but i seem to have botched it, because now some of my pages don't display at all. :-) is there a more current version of this patch around? i think it's important functionality... paul =--------------------- paul fox, pgf(a)foxharp.boston.ma.us (arlington, ma, where it's 77.5 degrees)

But if you do: dillo www.coasttocoastam.com/art_bell_cam.html There it is! A simple end-run around javascript that, it seems to me, could be built into Dillo without much problem. As for the other eye-candy bullshit done with javascripts, I couldn't care less. I don't want non-open-source software on my computer, and it is my understanding that java is not open-source. Tom

Greetings, Could anyone tell me why this page is readable with W3m but not with Dillo 0.8.0? http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/ A no-java warning appears in both browsers, but w3m displays all the text and Dillo doesn't. Hi, in keeping with the latest and greatest, I was playing around with xhtml. Now the standard seems to be that xhtml should be send es application/xhtml+xml in the first place (there's a note about it somewhere). Or, if that is not possible, application/xml, text/xml, etc. Never as text/html (because this mimetype is not registered for this content). However, dillo doesn't recognize this mimetype and always tries to save an application/xhtml+xml file, though it can always be rendered as html. The current workaround for dillo and other browsers is just send text/html but since standards compliance is very important for dillo I would suggest treating application/xhtml+xml as though it was text/html for the time being. (or at least until the CSS support is complete). Thoughts? Ideas? Wim

Funding activities

Hi there, After coming back from LSM 2005, I've devoted 100% of my time to the funding effort. I know I said that most probably after the LSM a FLTK-based prototype would be online, but at that time we were _very_ advanced to get the core team to work full time on dillo. It failed almost at signing the contracts. I was waiting for this to happen to tell the list the good news. BTW, most of the new dpi stuff (not yet uploaded) was a work for this company. I see no point in spending my last $$ in developing just to tell you a have to leave in a couple of months, so funding has acquired the first priority. For those of you that are curious, the donations link has raised EUR 500 in all its lifespan (2 years or less IIRC). Almost surely, the next release will be GTK-based, and I'll code only when I find a timespan in my fund-related activities. The FLTK port went great while we were working on full steam with Sebastian in Germany, now it's stalled. If funding succeeds, we'll be able to work on it again, and you'll surely enjoy the new Dillo much more than the current one! -- Cheers Jorge.-

It would be nice if downloading images was optional, but I've been reading through the docs and haven't found a way. Perhaps a configuration item in dillorc that would tell Dillo to first download just the HTML source, render the text, and then, if you chose to reload it, bring down the images too....?? If Dillo could do that, and be used to convert HTML to plain text, I could ditch w3m! Thanks, Tom

cookies dpi patch is on CVS now

Hi there, After a more in depth review, the patch for the cookies dpi was uploaded to the CVS. It has some minor modifications and it's ready for testing! Cookies now hare handled by a dpi (dillo plugin), so there's no more restriction of only one instance of Dillo having cookies enabled. Every single dillo sees cookies.dpi as the "cookies server" so there's no problem, and dillo's core gets smaller. After 'make", remember to "dpidc stop" and to 'make install' to get the cookies dpi installed. If you find some bugs, please report back here to Diego or me. Diego: I'll try to catch up with the thread about the MIME dpi. As Matthias Franz pointed out, I'm interested on it. The main point is to make it use the dpi/dpip framework instead of a custom approach. --More on this soon. I'm also working on a new dpip library, so it may be merged in the future (don't worry, that's my work and it makes things easier, not harder). Porting the cookies dpi to it should be no more than one day, and I have already every other dpi working on it on a custom tree... -- Cheers Jorge.-

News after LSM 2005

Hi there! It's being some time since coming back from France, but I'm catching up. There's a new link for "LSM 2005", and there's a video URL for those interested. Ah, Philippe De Swert, made a Debian package for x86 with dillo-0.8.5. It is available from the downloads page. Please let the Debian guys know so they can get it, and try it, tell them to report back here in case the package needs some polishing. It's being a lot of work with these conferences. I'll report here more news when we sort out what to do in the near future. The FLTK2-based prototype is not ready yet for CVS and this is one of the things we're deciding on with Sebastian. Diego: please check and send me the cookies patch to upload it to the CVS (and to merge with the prototype). The server was down several days because it was hacked. Now it's working normally again, reinstalled on another machine. This probably explains why it was so hard to get in touch with it. :-) -- Cheers Jorge.-

[Dillo-dev]Meta-refresh warning

While using dillo to check some pages for AnyBrowser-friendliness, I've encountered the warning inserted whenever a <meta http-equiv="refresh" ...> tag is used. I interpreted this as meaning that the HTML I'd written was in some way wrong, and I should find another way to achieve the same effect. The warning says: This page uses the NON-STANDARD meta refresh tag. The HTML 4.01 SPEC\n" " (sec 7.4.4) recommends explicitly to avoid it. I checked that part of the HTML spec to see exactly what it said, and whether it suggested any better alternatives. However, all that section has to say about the use of "refresh" is: ( http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/global.html#h-7.4.4 ) Note. Some user agents support the use of META to refresh the current page after a specified number of seconds, with the option of replacing it by a different URI. Authors should not use this technique to forward users to different pages, as this makes the page inaccessible to some users. Instead, automatic page forwarding should be done using server-side redirects. My understanding of that paragraph is that it's only recommending against redirection, in which the refresh tag specifies that a different page should be loaded after the timeout. It might additionally mean that it's only discouraged for "instant" (ie. delay=0) redirection. OTOH, refreshing the same page (which is what I'm trying to do with the page that I'm writing) should be OK. In this case, shouldn't dillo only complain if the "content" part of the tag contains a "URL=" (even if it won't handle the refresh without the aid of the meta-refresh patch)? I can write the necessary trivial patch to insert such a check if people agree that it's The Right Thing, but I thought I'd better check that I've interpreted the spec properly (and am reading the right bit of it) before I do so. This is useful if you are calling dillo from scripts or other applications and you need to enable/disable some options for a particular task. The patch is against dillo 8.5. I'm a dillo user, not a developer, but I sat down one day to write a quick patch to get dillo to let me quickly view PDF files because I read lots of them from the web. So I wrote a program called quick and then I wrote a patch to get dillo to call quick when it's a file that quick can open. I'm happy with the benefit, but this is not a patch for dillo, it's just a hack to get me happy (I didn't use glib, for example.) I wanted to drop you guys this message to tell you guys that there's one user who would like such feature in dillo and I should perhaps ask you guys how you would build such feature in dillo if you were to sit down today and do it. Who knows? I could do it myself, if it won't be too complicated. I also wanted to say thanks. Hello, i have found that the problem was in https dpi. Under some circunstances, self signed certificate and formated in some way, the https dpi died. I send a patch to fix it. The patch is for dillo 0.8.5 but surely it works in previous versions, only touches dpi/https.c, it works with or without cookies.dpi patch, whitout cokies.dpi patch only the first dillo have cookies. I send a this mail with cc to the list to make it,the new(and the fix), public so the people can test it ASAP. Hi, i have problems with dillo on sparc64. When using a mechanism of OpenBSD 's malloc i'm able to detect a bug in the dpi stuff. At the moment i've found that the function Dpi_append_io_buf() in the file src/IO/dpi.c is wrong. The following line is reallocating a buffer: conn->Buf = g_realloc(conn->Buf, (gulong)io->Status); But when debugging the values of io->Status don't seem to be adequate. I haven't been able to completely fix it as the code is seriously lacking of comment. To be honest i don't even completely understand what this chunk is doing and the code is so unreadable that it doesn't help (not to be harsh but just to give my humble opinion). Damien

Hello, now that i have some free time i want to test the cookies dpi over https like Jorge suggested. I need the server so i ask to the webmaster if he can mount some https pages with cookies for the test, like Jorge suggested too. About other things and thinking about the future, i have some ideas about DPI framework and DPIs that can be useful, maybe. Register and init DPIs I think that the way that gives more adventages is to let dpid manage this using dpidrc to store the list of available DPIs(updated each time dpid is runned with the installed DPIs in the system and in the HOME/.dillo/dpi directory), and the metadata about DPIs: mime types or protocol that manages that DPI, menu entries or buttons that DPIs need and the more important if a user wants use(enabled) that DPI or not(disabled) dpidc need new commands (enable, disable, list DPIs) and individual register of DPIs(dpidc register directory/where/the/new/DPI/is) When a new DPI is register dpid run the DPI and ask the DPI metadata which a new DPI command(<dpi cmd='give_metadata'> ?) and the DPI returns the metadata in a text key-value format, for example a dpi that converts rtf and pdf files to html can send postfix_understand=rtf,pdf mime_understand=text/x-rtf,text/x-pdf (with the right mime type of course) After this dpid stores the metadata in dpidrc file. For example: DPI=rtf_pdf_viewer state=enabled or disabled or ... postfix_understand=rtf,pdf mime_understand=text/x-rtf,text/x-pdf And now three ways to get the new metadata in dillo or the DPIs that understand them: 1) The pasive solution. when a DPI start it read the dpidrc searching the metadata that it understand. (A DPI that manages mime types, so dillo do not need to do it, can make a list with the name and mimes that understand each DPI) 2) Active, but silly one. Dpid re-send the metadata to each other DPI, with a new DPI command, and each DPI redo his internal state with the metadata it understand. This is the worst solution because dpid need to run all DPIs to be sure that metadata arrives to the right DPI. 3) The complex and flexible solution, my prefered one. There is a key-value(send_me) in the DPIs metadata to register keys of metadatas. Dpid understand this key(send_me) and have a internal list to send the metadatas to the right DPI. If a DPI send a key registered with the send_me key while registering, dpid sends the change to the DPI that registered that key so it can update its internal data, caches, whatever. Example: A mime DPI manages the files with mime types unknows to dillo. When it register send this metadata and is stored in dpidrc like part of its metadata send_me=mime_understand Then after the rtf_pdf_viewer DPI is registered, and if it is enabled, dpid send to the mime DPI the DPI=rtf_pdf_viewer mime_understand=text/x-rtf,text/x-pdf and mime DPI updates its state so it can call rtf_pdf_viewer when find a rtf or pdf file. Pros: - It is so flexible that new keys and resources can be used by new DPIs while dpid, or even dillo in some case, do not need to be updated to understand it. - Do not need to modify dillo internals or few Cons: - Dpid, dpidc and DPIs need to be modified - And more, sure Protocols and mime DPIs Based in the xproto DPI i think that a DPI can manage all the protocols and mime formats that dillo do not understand. Dillo simply passes the url or stream(or file location) to that DPI when it do not understand the format and the DPI using a list call the right DPI, script, wathever to manage it. That last DPI open an app, return a data in format that dillo understand(html, gif, jpg, png), etc. Image/objets html tags can call the protocol_and_mime_DPI, with some care and a especial dpi tag, so new formats can be viewed in dillo, if a DPI converts them to formats understanded by dillo, in the right place in the page. A interesting idea is to can embed apps, like sylpheed embed dillo, in the space of a image or object with new tags and/or pasing the WID. The protocol_and_mime_DPI send a html page to dillo when there is more than a DPI or action, download included, for a protocol or mime to ask the user what to do, set default action, etc Pros: - All code is outside dillo - Compatible with all Cons: - Can need news dpi tags - And more, sure HTML GUI When dillo support frames(The only think because i do use an old dillo 0.8.0 patched with frames sometimes is because it have frames)/iframe/objects(this tag can include html to, but frames are better) the dillo GUI can be a html page, with a iframe that contains the viewed web page, and a DPI that modifies the GUI html page. The new thing is that the DPI can use a cache file with that html page that dillo loads at start so dillo init is as fast as now, only loading the DPI when needed. All DPIs that generate html must use the same CSS so all have the same look. Pros: - Make dillo core small - Look is fully configurable - DPIs can register menus and buttons and dillo do not need even to know or have the list of buttons or menus registered in mem an in each dillo Cons: - Need to add remote control dpi tags to dillo - And more, sure Adding all Only frames, and new dpi tags need to be done in dillo core and it gives, when the DPIs needed and dpid are done, a very flexible interface to cordinate DPIs and for example that the DPIs GUI elements can be implemented step by step based on funcionality without touching dillo internals and not all at same modifing dillo core or doing it unestable. Only some ideas. If somebody wants to disscuss them, destroy them, blame about my english or me and my sleep state at this time i have my e-mailbox and eyes open to read all of them. Hi there, The release candidate one tarball for 0.8.5 is ready for testing. Please get it from: http://www.dillo.org/download/dillo-0.8.5-rc1.tar.bz2 This code has had a lot of testing so emphasis is on the build/compile process on the different platforms and on the file dpi. Hi, i send a small patch to make the file.dpi a little more intuitive than now. The patch make that when one person write only "file:" in the dillo location bar it show the current working directory, like previous dillo file: handlers, instead to show nothing, like now. I have think all side effects that the changes can have and test it. The patch is for the current cvs, but works in previos dillo versions. Can we have something like this? I know it is not done yet, but there are some things I would like to see. For example, gcc-4.0 on amd64 treats this as an error void *tmp; int i = (int)tmp; I would hate to have to debug it later, so it would be nice to have fltk version od dillo while it is still "young", and try to patch things. I do have both compilers, but sooner or later, people will have to patch it on SuSE, Slackware or whatever distro they have. Why not making it correct right now? Thanx. :o) -- Pinguin? Daemon? Fish? Dragon fly? Grow up. Windows are the future, daemons and animals are for fairy tales.

Hi there! A long time since the last post right? Well, don't worry, as always, a silent dillo-dev list means lots of stuff going on behind the scenes! I'm preparing the dillo-0.8.5 tarball now. This will hopefully be the last GTK1-based dillo to be released, as the next one will be FLTK2-based. The plan is to show a strong protoype in Dijon at the LSM 2005, and have it shortly thereafter ready for public consumption (after a play/test/fix/stabilize cycle on dillo-dev). Back to dillo-0.8.5: this release is mainly a bug-fix release. The final touches were just uploaded to current CVS. Please download it, test, and report back to the list on how it works. This will help me to make the tarball and release it ASAP. As currently I'm working on three source trees, getting rid of this one will certainly relieve my workload. The second tree is a rewrite of the plugin stuff under a cleaner design that's to be included in the FLTK2-tree. -- Cheers Jorge.-

I have dillo set as my default browser. It opens all right when I click on a full URL in an email, but if what's there just starts with www, leaving off the http://, it fails. Other browsers can figure that out -- as can dillo if I type it into the location field. Why not by clicking?
