dw::Table valgrind-friendliness

Dillo has been neglecting its valgrind cleanliness recently and it turns out the culprit is dw::Table, which resizes its internal vectors without initialising any new values that appear. If you valgrind dillo and immediately close the splash window, valgrind reports 121 "Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value" errors! This patch reduces that number to 2! Currently, dillo always submits forms using url encoding regardless of the encoding specified by the form. Wikipedia, for example, specifies multipart/form-data because the user may submit huge blocks of text in languages where url encoding will be very inefficient. - This patch always uses the same boundary, but a different one REALLY should be used for every form submission. At the least, the string should be scrambled up somehow. - It adds a URL_MultipartEnc flag. - For the Content-type header, I pull the boundary out of URL_DATA because I didn't want to clutter up the URL with a field for something not commonly used. ----------------------------------------------------------- For multipart/form-data, a submission goes like: [headers] Content-type: multipart/form-data; boundary="[boundary]" --[boundary] Content-Disposition: form-data; name="[name1]" [value1] --[boundary] Content-Disposition: form-data; name="[name2]" [value2] --[boundary] ...and eventually... What shall we do with the buggy RFC?

Dillo is buggy because RFC2396 is buggy! An outrageous claim, I know, but hear me out! The problem appears when resolving a relative URI reference such as "?foo=bar" relative to a URI such as "http://a.b.c/e/f". Dillo resolves this to "http://a.b.c/e?foo=bar" ie. it loses the last path component. This is clearly wrong, and it breaks pages such as http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/gallery/2008/jan/18/1?picture=332092597 (trying clicking on the big picture - you won't get the next one in the gallery). Clearly Dillo should only lose the last path component of the base URI when the path of the relative is non-empty. Nevertheless, this broken behaviour *is* RFC compliant! If we study the 7 steps in "5.2. Resolving Relative References to Absolute Form" of RFC2396 we see a problem in step 6, which begins: a) All but the last segment of the base URI's path component is copied to the buffer. In other words, any characters after the last (right-most) slash character, if any, are excluded. So we are instructed to lose the last path component in all cases. Unfortunately we get to step 6 if the URI reference is "?foo=bar". Hence the breakage. Patch attached. Jeremy Henty

Hello, below is an improved version of the redraw optimization. It now also covers table based pages - at least to some point. The challenge is to make the already commited optimization work recursively. Other than I originally thought topLevel is always a Textblock. Table based pages simply consist of a Textblock with a huge Table as child widget. Textblock now needs to avoid redrawing the child area when the table size increases. The redrawing is left to the Table-code, which then can be optimized. Please test carefully and report any anomalies you find. Regards, Johannes

A common cause of the "can't start dpid daemon" error is clicking on a link with a typo'ed HREF that has an invalid URL scheme (eg. 'ttp://' instead of 'http://', to cite the real-life example that prompted this patch). But the error message gives *no* context that would help to diagnose the problem. If it cited the URL scheme it would save a lot of time. (I had to start Firefox before I realised what the problem was!) Here's a patch to do that. Jeremy Henty

Hello, here comes my attempt to avoid unnecessary redraws caused by images that are not visible. The first patch makes some minor optimizations to the drawing code and disables the use of the asap parameter for better testing. The second patch replaces the general queueDrawTotal() in Layout::resizeIdle () with more specific redraw calls in widgets that can be topLevel. Currently only Textblock is optimized. The idea is that resizing child widgets in a textblock don't affect the layout of the textblock above the resizing widget. So only the area below needs to be redrawn. I think that does not hold for tables, but perhaps other optimizations are possible here? Ideas anyone? The effect is visible e.g. on http://chlamydia.fs.ei.tum.de/pub/DragonFly/packages/stable/DragonFly-1.10.… but not on table based pages. Cheers, Johannes

Hi, I have finally taken the time to make dillo run on my ipaq. Screenshot: http://www.tzi.de/~akemnade/dillo-ipaq.png The big pitfall here is if you don't enable Xft/freetype in your fltk build, you can screw up things. fltk does not get the default fonts from the xserver on the ipaq, so due to missing error checking in fltk, dillo crashes when the first label gets rendered. But I guess, without freetype you won't get nice fonts anyway... dillo/dw does not need to be patched for that. fltk needs a bit of tweaking, I'll look if it is solved in the current version (I'm still using that r5917 snapshot). OK, please ignore my previous attempt at reworking Dillo's ROWSPAN handling. I have a simple fix for the bugs I reported at http://starurchin.singularity/dillo/bugs/table_rowspan.html . This patch tweaks dw::Table::apportionRowSpan() to handle the special case where all the rows being spanned have zero height. This fixes the special cases that were breaking without changing the behaviour in any other case. (BTW, I still think there is a case for reworking Dillo's ROWSPAN algorithms along the lines I suggested, but it's nice to fix bugs without such efforts.) Regards, Jeremy Henty

With my color settings, my buttons were light grey with unreadable white labels. Well, that's no good. And standard gui widget colors scream "I'm using a Windows Office Productivity Suite!" to me. So here is something to play with. I currently have the widgets using background color and the labels/text either black or white. fltk_black to make black work right widget_colors.dillo to set backgroundColor in Style. widget_colors.dw where you set the widget colors.

Perhaps it should be limited by screen dimensions. Or something based on prefs.height and prefs.width...

Hi there, - Added a text placeholder: "[IMG]" for img_off mode. - Added a http_referer preference. See details in dillorc2. This couple plays well together. All, I am very glad to see that dillo-fltk has now gained some momentum. While looking at it on FreeBSD (6.2) I came across some minor problems, patches for which are attached: 1) detect_libiconv.diff src/decode.c uses iconv_open but - at least on FreeBSD - libiconv is not in the default linker path, making the build abort. Add a simple test to configure.in to check for libiconv's presence and usability and a substitution for ICONV_LIBS to src/Makefile.am. 2) src-colors.h.diff I needed to include <stdint.h> or <inttypes.h> in order to have int32_t properly defined. I decided to wrap this include in a hopefully portable and correct way by instrumenting config.h. 3) src-dns.c.diff On current FreeBSD releases, netdb.h does no longer define EAI_NODATA, it had been marked as obsoleted there and #if 0'ed out since Oct 2003. It therefore cannot be checked for on a current FreeBSD release, so test whether we are either compiling on something other that FreeBSD or if it's a 4.x or older FreeBSD release. Other BSDs might have similar issues in this regard. Otherwise dillo-fltk looks really promising -- keep up the good work! [PATCH]: improved ROWSPAN handling

Here's a page demonstrating some problems Dillo has when all the cells in a table have ROWSPAN > 1 . http://starurchin.org/dillo/bugs/table_rowspan.html The cause of these issues is that Dillo has (excuse me) a rather clumsy way of calculating the row heights once it has assigned column widths and calculated the cell heights. It first calculates row heights based on the cells with ROWSPAN = 1 , and then adds extra height to rows to accommodate cells with ROWSPAN > 1 . This algorithm gives poor results when no cells have ROWSPAN = 1 . It can add unnecessary vertical space (see example on the page). Worse, if there is no vertical padding in the table as well as no cells with ROWSPAN = 1 , the table has zero height after the first pass. The second pass can't cope with this (because it would be dividing by 0) so it does nothing, so the table still has no height when the layout is finished. This messes up the redisplaying of the contents and can create "dead" text that can't be selected or clicked. This patch fixes all these problems by rewriting the algorithm that calculates row heights. Nothing else in the layout code is changed. The new code scans all the cells once, top-down, and keeps track of the minimum height we must insert between the top of the table and the bottom of the cell. Once each cell is dealt with, the height assigned to its top will not change (because we work top-down) and the height assigned to its bottom can only increase, so by the end all cells have at least as much vertical height as they need. Then another pass tours the height constraints and writes the correct values into the cumHeights vector. Advantages of this patch: * Fixes the bugs noted above. * Assigns the minimal possible vertical height to the table (given the column widths that have already been assigned). * Treats all cells the same no matter what their ROWSPAN, so there are no special cases when no cells have ROWSPAN = 1 . * Doesn't do any division, so there are no special cases when the available padding is 0 . If this change is merged I'll submit a cleanup patch that removes the now-unused apportionRowSpan() method. This was a purely internal change, so I didn't need to update any docs. (Phew!) HREF attributes often contain unescaped spaces, even though this is illegal. This is unfortunate because Dillo deletes illegal URL characters, which breaks the link. (Maybe this one deserves to be called a patch. It seems pretty clearly to be an improvement to me, at least...) If a page has, e.g., black text on a black background, it is nice to be able to highlight it to read it. So this changes the behavior from highlighted background is inverted background and highlighted text is inverted text to highlighted background is inverted background and highlighted text is normal background. And that is a good improvement in most cases, but then bg_color=#808080 inverts to 7f7f7f. So I changed SHADING_INVERSE so that it's really more of a SHADING_CONTRAST (I left the name alone because you might have chosen to apply my recent widget coloring code, which had SHADING_INVERSE in it somewhere, and it's nice to have patches compile cleanly.) The one negative point I've seen is in something like: <html><head></head><body bgcolor=#808080 text=#808080 link=blue> words words <s>strike</s> <u>underline</u> <a href=link>link</a> words. </body></html> The highlighted text will show no distinction between the underlined text and the link. It didn't seem important enough to bother with at the moment...

This patch comments out all uses of DEBUG_MSG in widget.cc . The justification is: * Consistency: all other uses of DEBUG_MSG in the DW source are already commented out. * The arguments to DEBUG_MSG use the GTK API, so they would fail to compile if they were ever used. Regards, Jeremy Henty

I'm worried about dillo2/src/url.c, line 361: p = str1 = dNew(char, strlen(url_str)); /* Yes, enough memory! */ The code after this line copies url_str to str1 , skipping illegal characters. It seems to me it should allocate one more character for the terminating null character. Does the comment "enough memory" mean that I am missing something, or is it talking about some other issue? Hi there, Good news! It looks like awakening the dragon wasn't a bad idea after all! It took a lot of time and debugging, but now after lots of tests, it seems much better than what we had before. This is not a simple patch, but an algorithms change + bug fixes. Beware that the html documentation is not up-to-date yet though; I prefer to let you test the new code with lots of other cases and to send feedback or bugfixes to the list before adopting the new code. I uploaded a subset of the used test cases to: http://www.dillo.org/test/tables You can start with per1.html, per2.html per3.html & per4.html. Please note that the test is not just rendering the page, but resizing its tables from MIN to MAX. It's interesting to compare what we had before, dillo1 and Firefox (Ill cases follow Firefox's example). So the bottom line is: Test, test, test!!! & send feedback. Hi there, As you may remember, I dared to awake the sleeping dragon of table apportion algorithms. Frankly, I don't yet know whether it was a good idea after all, but I have hope. It is impresive how complex the geometric combination of cases grows; hopefully some code will be uploaded before Jan 20. In the meanwhile, does anyone want to give a try to imagemaps? Or maybe to implement tabs? This is much simpler than it looks. Basically we can add the tab widgets and to switch the navigation stack and rendered page upon click. As dillo is quick to render this has the advantage of low memory consumption because we don't need to have all the rendered pages in memory! And it opens the possibility of multiple windows with TABS using low resources. -- Cheers Jorge.-

(the ones that start out blurry and grow sharper) - Added code for progressive display of, well, progressive jpegs because I was tired of waiting for full download before display. jpeglib uses the word "scan" for each loop through the scanlines of the image, so I did the same. I'm not sure it's a terribly descriptive term, though, at least to me (not a graphics person). Couldn't think of a better word. - Turned out scaled ones didn't work. (And, incidentally, that was frustrating because it took some time to realize that the breaking ones were scaled ever so slightly.) Added some bit clearing to imgbuf code on the dw side so that scaled buffers would continue to copy from root buffers. - Turned out that if there was more than one copy on a page, only the first copy worked. (dillo uses image decoders on the first one and pulls the scanlines out of Dicache for the rest.) More bit clearing and a scan number to help a_Dicache_callback with its copying. - Discovered that interlaced pngs use progressive display, and that they hadn't been working for scaled or for multiple on a page. - Considered looking into animated gifs, but then my good sense prevailed :)

Dug out my old patch and ripped out the meta tag stuff, the charset-setting dialog, etc. This much should be unobjectionable. Had good fun searching for things like dillo ??????? and seeing how many sites using windows-1251 or koi8-r worked now with this much of the code. Maybe half. Greek and Hebrew were somewhat less than half. And my fonts don't have enough coverage to make it fun trying Asian sites. Of course it doesn't matter much when everybody who participates here is a native speaker of some latin-1 language... Note that View Source will not show files as converted because the conversion is up in html.cc and View Source uses the cache.

I have been running Dillo on top of the latest daily snapshot (fltk-2.0.x-r5990) and seen no problems. Has anyone else tried this? Maybe we should update the recommended FLTK snapshot? NB: fltk-2.0.x-r5990 is not binary compatible with the current recommended snapshot, so if you upgrade you have to rebuild Dillo (and any other FLTK2 applications) or you will get memory corruption. FYI my system is Linux 2.6.23.12-0 , glibc 2.3.4 , gcc 3.4.3 . Jeremy Henty

With other browsers, if I copy a URL that begins with www (i.e., no http://), I will get to the site; with some, I don't even need the www -- I can type simply "loc.gov" for instance, to be taken to the Library of Congress. This is a great help, not only with sites whose address one knows by heart, but also with email, in which people omit the front part(s) of sites routinely. It would be an especially welcome feature for those of us who keep Dillo set as our default browser. I have no idea how those other browsers do it, nor why Dillo does not. HTTP/1.1 has warning headers to tell you things like "110 Response is stale" or "214 Transformation applied". There should probably be some mechanism to actually notify the user properly -- nobody's ever going to notice an MSG_HTTP string. As was the case with the "100 Continue"s some time ago, I am not encountering genuine ones to test against. I just tested by letting it treat date headers as warnings...

dillo crashed on a form where an option didn't have a value (clicked on the Go button at the bottom of http://www.syllable-hardware.info/hardware.php?list.1 ) A glance at the spec suggested that what I wanted in that case was the contents of the tag. So... I've noticed that sometimes people will make a table with two columns for the purpose of indenting their text, specifying only the width of the first column as some percentage. When they do this, dillo squishes everything to the right.
