I was thinking about the news that was going around last month about yahoo making its data retention period shorter (with exceptions to let them get away with whatever they want, but that's par for the course). e.g. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/12/17/yahoo_anonymization_explained/ It seems like a good idea to set the search_url default to whoever is the...let's say "least bad" in terms of privacy at a given time.

As it's primarily written in TCL, it's platform independent, doesn't require any external dependencies, can run straight from USB flash memory (it can also save its db there too). Unlike dillo, hv3 also supports frames. Finally, even it's considered to be alpha state software, at least when javascript support is disabled, it is pretty stable. BTW, I don't know the current status of SEE project, I just know that the last time I checked (half a year ago or so) it had really many problems. Hi Dillo team, I have a simple question concerning the new tabbed browsing feature in Dillo2: The only way to open a link in a new tab seems to be a click with the middle mouse button. Since there are some people, who don't have a mouse (for example on Laptops, MacBooks etc.) and therefore must find this middle-click very unhandy, I was wondering whether it is possible to open a link within a new tab by using another method, for example the common <CTRL>-<left mous button> combination? If this is currently not possible, could you introduce it in a future version of dillo? (I think the inofficial Dillo version, which is currently shipped with Debian/Ubuntu knows this alternative combination.) Many thanks in advance for your help, Alexander

Dialog_user_password_cb() should not use VOIDP2INT, because the (void *) argument was originally an (int *), not an int or long. This bug makes the dialog always call its callback even when the user presses the Cancel button. As a result it is futile to cancel the Basic Authentication dialog: the page reloads and the dialog pops up again. Patch attached. Jeremy Henty

Linux Weekly News covers Hv3, a Tcl-based lightweight browser. http://lwn.net/Articles/311823/ They refer to Dillo as "perhaps the best known minimalist browser"! It's worth reading the comments to see what people want to see in a lightweight browser and what they don't miss if it's not there. They certainly appreciate the speed. Hv3 claims to support CSS, but I'm not seeing it: Slashdot and the BBC look almost exactly the same as they do in Dillo. Mind you, I'm running it from the latest CVS and getting plagued with Tcl errors too, so maybe it's just temporarily broken. Hv3 is also supposed to support Javascript through SEE, but the SEE site is not responding right now so I can't try it out (and comments suggest that getting it into a source build is broken). Maybe SEE would be a way to support JavaScript in Dillo? Amyway, it looks like 2009 will be an exciting year for Dillo. Jeremy

Unfortunately the cache/dicache/image-decode/image code is so entangled that it needs a rewrite. Quite surprising it works stable "as is". The good news is that after you merge the latest cleanups in dillo main, the attached patch will more or less make it work as desired. experimental patch: image error status as alt text

You know how for image redirections and 404s, nothing at all happens? User's mind: "I didn't get the image. Dillo must be broken." (or the address can't resolve, or content-type doesn't match...) So I tried making something recently that shows, e.g., [404] as the alt text. In this form it's probably wrong in a design sense because cache probably isn't allowed to call image, but maybe it'll prompt some discussion... (and maybe it'd be better to pull the status out of the header whenever needed rather than adding more junk to the cache entry.)

Hi all. Now I figure out the way to access gmail but I realize that isn't sophisticated. Anyway what I have modified dillo after all is add "force reload link" feature. This is the step to access gmail 1. Goto gmail.com and login in. 2. You will see meta redirect page so just force reload the link on meta redirect link. However you won't go anywhere yet. 3. Goto mail.google.com/mail, then you find link to simple HTML page. If some of you are interested the patch, I will post. Regards, furaisanjin

Hi, @corvid: while debugging the CSS loading patch, I noticed that sometimes dillo doesn't get the close after transfer event. This is needed to trigger the CSS parser with a full sheet. For instance, go to http://localhost:631/ (CUPS interface), and the progress bar will not get inactive after the page is got. Now, if you switch http.c to HTTP/1.0 queries, it will work as expected. OK, here it is. Please comment. Some observations: When the cache parses the HTTP header we just attach any authentication headers to the cache entry. Nothing else happens until we process the clients. Just before iterating over the clients we check if all the data is in. If it is then we do any necessary authentication. Opening the authentication dialog runs the FLTK event loop, which means that incoming data can call the cache again, triggering CCC warnings. We work around it by deferring the dialog to a timeout so that the cache finishes iterating over the clients before the dialog appears. This is annoying but I don't see a better way at the moment. The authentication dialog does not know which browser window opened the URL so it can't call a_Nav_reload(). Instead I implemented a_Nav_reload_url(). There's an interesting case when the server demands authentication for a realm that we have already authenticated ourselves to. It could be that we didn't send authentication because we didn't know the path was in the realm, or it could be that the authentication we sent was wrong. This requires the code to deduce what it did last time it saw this URL and rely on what it will do the next time. It works, but it feels fragile to me. I would prefer the URL to explicitly record authentication attempts so that the code doesn't have to second-guess itself. Thoughts? I implemented a full token-value list parser as per the RFC. Maybe this is overkill for Basic authentication, but it will be necessary for Digest authentication. Yes, it has gotos; I began by setting flags but decided that gotos were actually cleaner. Maybe it should be rewritten in state-machine style? If the user opens several pages in a realm in a very short time then it is conceivable that multiple authentication dialogs for the same realm could pop up (just like the https DPI sometimes does with certificate dialogs). I don't address this at the moment because I think it won't be a problem in practice. If it needs fixing then we will have to monitor the list of currently open dialogs to avoid duplicates. shaded colors and css

Hello, mapping css properties to dw::core::style::Style members went very smooth, because Style was obviously implemented with css in mind. Just for the shaded color thing I can't find a corresponding concept in css. What exactly is the definition of a shaded color? Is it just a bit darker than the normal one? Besides that, I've read the mailing list and gave some thought to these interesting topics. 1.- CSS plan (basic) 2.- Basic authentication 3.- Toolbox Icon 4.- Gmail compatibility (at least read/send) 5.- Close icon in Tab label 6.- Switch to mercurial I believe our next release would attract more people if it had, at least, implemented a couple in the {1,2,3,4,5} set. ----------------- A bit more detail: ----------------- 1.- CSS plan (basic) a) I have to implement the network retrieval of CSS stylesheets, so Johannes can continue working from there. b) Deciding a basic CSS set (e.g. just colors) is the next step before including it in the main tree c) Hooking it to a dillorc preference and to point 3.- (Read below) 2.- Basic authentication a) I have to review this patch after working on point 1.- b) This is a very requested feature after CSS. It'd be great to have it working. 3.- Toolbox Icon a) Since a long time ago I'd like to have a Toolbox icon to the right of bookmarks with a drop down menu. Dillo and Gmail

Hi all, First off, I got to say, congrats on the great browser. I have an old laptop and firefox just takes ages to load. Dillo, on the other hand, is lightning fast! Great! The only thing I'm missing is Gmail. Does Dillo work with gmail? Do I need to do any special tricks? I compiled the latest DIllo2 from svn and I did enabled https so I can get past the login page but then I'm stuck at a warning page about a non-standard redirect and, the link on that page does not work. Thoughts on revision control

I've been using git to manage the Dillo source locally. I just installed mercurial to experiment with. Things I like about git are the ability to rebase, ie. reorder patches. This is neat because I can develop a patch on top of my local modifications and then push it down the stack so that I submit a patch against the pristine source rather than my customised version. The ability to stash your current changes in a temporary branch is useful too. You could do all this with explicit branches, but it would be more involved and git gives you nice, quick and easy ways to do the same thing. Mercurial seems to be the same sort of beast, though perhaps it is a bit less of a "Swiss Army Chainsaw" than git. I'd be surprised if there were any real issues using either to manage Dillo since I doubt we'd be using anything more than the basic facilities that both offer. I'd prefer git but only out of laziness as it's the one I already know (which means I should probably investigate mercurial just to broaden my mind if nothing else). Regards, Jeremy Henty

how about a form menu?

I was playing around with making a form menu. So far: 1) Submit. Nicer from the user's perspective than prefs.generate_submit. 2) Reset. Not really needed when you can just press back and forward. 3) Show/Hide Hiddens. Lets you edit them, which I believe the user should have the power to do. ..and thinking of making an Info option to show submission charset and, oh, whatever else. What I have now is icky proof-of-concept code (although it's been working fine), so I want to see how well the idea goes over before trying to clean it up.

Html_tag_close_* called twice

Hi, corvid pointed out that Html_tag_close_* functions are getting called twice. This is causing problems when parsing <style>...</style> contents in Html_tag_close_style() as done in css-prototype now. We could work around this somehow, but wouldn't it be cleaner to make sure Html_tag_close_* is called just once, when an element is closed? Cheers, Johannes

dialog to change charset

I know that Jorge finds a charset selection dialog where the user has to know what to enter to be insufficiently user-friendly, but I don't know a nice alternative, and this can go in the dillo-dev archives for anyone who wants it.

Basic Authentication: what's happening here?

OK, after reviewing the links people sent in (thanks!) and the discussion at [1] I decided not to create a DPI. I've hit a strange problem with getting the page to reload after the user confirms the user/password dialog. I show the dialog in Cache_parse_header() by calling fltk::Window::exec() and set a new CA_Reload flag (which is just like CA_Redirect, but simpler) if the user confirms. Cache_process_queue() then handles the CA_Reload. *But* Cache_process_queue() runs before the window is closed, and therefore before the flag is set. It looks as though the rest of the data comes in asynchronously while the dialog is still showing. If I change a_Auth_do_auth() to return immediately instead of showing a dialog then Cache_process_queue() runs after the flag is set, as I would expect. Is there any way to stop this happening, or do I have to postpone showing the dialog until Cache_process_queue() runs? Patch attached if you wish to experiment (it doesn't do authentication but it demonstrates the problem with the dialog). Q: Thoughts on a user/password dialog for an HTTP AUTH dpi?

I'm implementing an HTTP AUTH dpi (based on the cookies dpi) and I'd appreciate comments on how I'm doing it. (Motivation: (a) I'm tired of the irony of having to use Firefox to log on to the FLTK Trac Wiki to update the Dillo page, (b) this will be a useful primer for hacking on the https dpi.) The problem is that the dpi must prompt the user for a username and password but src/dialog.cc only supports dialogs that present a choice of buttons. I think I'll have to add a_Dialog_user_passwd() to src/dialog.cc to create a modal dialog, return the clicked button and write the contents of the dialog entries into a struct. Then I can add a wrapper for it to src/dpiapi.c and hook it into a_Capi_ccc(). That will let the dpi query the user. Is this a good way to do it or is there a smarter way? Hi, here's the current todo list: * convert more of html.cc and form.cc to the new style handling. see Html_tag_open_a() as an example. Basically every style change that happens due to an HTML attribute (e.g. bgcolor="black") should be handled by passing a corresponding hint in CSS form to the styleEnginge using the setNonCssHints() methods. This way these attributes can be overridden e.g. by the user stylesheet as defined in the CSS standard. Other styling that is fixed for the HTML element in question (e.g. font size changes caused by <small>) should be replaced by corresponding entries in the user-agent stylesheet (see CssContext::buildUserAgentStyle()). There is an example user-agent stylesheet at http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/sample.html One of the more complex parts to convert is list handling (Html_tag_open_li()). * Reenable shaded colors as default for table borders. However CSS21 states (http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/box.html#border-color-properties) "If an element's border color is not specified with a border property, user agents must use the value of the element's 'color' property as the computed value for the border color." Not sure what to do here. What do you think? * Switch "width" and "height" handling from dw::core::style::Length to CssLength. Problem is how to handle relative lengths as they occur in Html_parse_length_or_multi_length(). They don't seem to exist in the CSS model. * Remove functions from html.cc that are now empty (e.g. Html_tag_open_em()). DilloHtml should be able to handle NULL for TagOpenFunct and TagCloseFunct of TagInfo. Or we could use a default function. * Enhance the CSS parser (or tokenizer) to properly ignore CSS comments. * Enhance the CSS parser to handle more complex CSS selector definitions (see http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/selector.html) * Figure out how to implement more complex selectors in the CssSelector class. At the same time think about how to speed up selector matching (currently on every opening tag all selectors are checked). Cheers, Johannes

A warning about HTTPS and proxies

In the dillo 2.0 dillorc, I had written that HTTPS uses wget, and that configuring wget to use a proxy would therefore send https traffic through it. That's wrong; I was repeating outdated information. Right now, HTTPS will not use a proxy at all. I bring this to your attention in case it matters to those using Tor and the like. ------ In other news, have you noticed that the dillo website is particularly speedy now? Andreas turned on HTTP compression :)

I want to get the status of everything in order to update http://www.dillo.org/Compatibility.html for dillo2. Linux x86 - works DragonFlyBSD - works Linux x86-64 - Justus was and is making snapshots, but I don't know whether he uses them much. Solaris 10 - Justus reported that it was running, but I believe it was just a quick test. OSX - Jorge reports that it works but is currently flaky. *BSD - Some of the mailing list traffic in October was devoted to getting them working. Presumably it would have been mentioned here if they had stopped working since, but... other - no idea. Looking back at what I just wrote, let me clarify that I meant that dillo2-on-osx is flaky, not that Jorge is flaky :)
