I can't find the old discussion, but long ago I asked Jorge about adding a binding for stop, and I remember his response being something like "Maybe. Perhaps we could use <ctrl>P." As for me, I'm going to change it to use Escape in my keysrc because I can press it in a hurry after I accidentally mistype/misclick. I found it quite useful back in my netscape/mozilla-using pre-dillo days. Obviously that can't be the default here, though, because Esc is already taken.

I'm thinking it might be more natural to be able to put, e.g., "*" instead of "<shift>8" (my keyboard, anyway). This patch is working for the cases I've happened to try, but I am not sure that event_text() will necessarily work for everything. (Last bit of the patch allows binding '<', which is a shifted key for me.) PS <shift>TabKey doesn't work for me, but it wasn't working for me before, either. PPS It would be nice if we could allow multibyte characters.

This one was much easier! A bit long but it allows you to search the amazon shop! :) You can change it to amazon.co.uk or amazon.de etc and it still works. Well I just finally managed to compile dillo from the latest developer source and wow it's really amazing! Check out this page: http://www.indiewire.com That site doesn't work properly in my old OS9 mac running the latest netscape available for OS9 but here on my linux laptop running dillo it is working just fine! Totally usable! I also tried myspace for a giggle and found that was also very usable, at least for reading blogs and comments and stuff. Great! Lots of other sites are also working just fine too! By the way, the copy link location option doesn't seem to work but maybe you already know that. It would be great to get wikipedia rendering really well, as there are so many wikipedia pages and it is so useful that it would be good just to have a little browser even if it only worked on wikipedia pages! Theres so much content on there. I am having one problem tho and I'm wondering if it is a known thing or something that I have done bad here. The default font seems to render very badly, like the kerning is out or something. The k in book is half missing and it is hard to read what you type into the location bar, and the wikipedia pages are basically unreadable too as they all use this font. Wondering if it is because of the version of the font libraries I'm linking in when I compile or something else? Is this a known problem? Anyway I'm still in awe at how well the new code is working! :) Thankyou! love Freya

Cache_client_make_key() carefully prevents integer overflow from making it return a negative value, but it might return 0. This is a problem because a_Capi_open_url() either calls a_Cache_open_url() and returns the new client key or else returns 0 to signal that it did not call a_Cache_open_url(). If Cache_client_make_key() returns 0 then a_Capi_open_url() will return 0 too, and so its caller will think that a_Cache_open_url() was not called even though it was. This will stop the new cache client from being added to the browser window that is responsible for creating it, which is wrong. Regards, Jeremy Henty

Style question: cleaning up NULL

I've noticed that a_Url_free() and a_Image_unref() both guard against being passed a NULL argument, yet in several cases the code that calls these functions also checks for a NULL, which is redundant. I think that if the API officially accepts NULL then code that calls the API shouldn't be checking for it. Conversely, if the API does not accept NULL then its implementation shouldn't be checking for it. So I would suggest we remove the redundancy by eliminating the NULL check from either the callers or the API implementation. Thoughts? I'll provide patches if people agree and decide whether or not these APIs should support NULL. Regards, Jeremy Henty

Hi there, It'd be very good if we can complete these points for the 2.1 release. Listed in no particular order: 1.- Dw documentation: online and as tarball. We have good docs. but to generate them there's a need to have: doxygen, graphviz, dot, latex and friends. That's why having it online and as a tarball is a good idea. 2.- Mapcity segfault In www.mapcity.cl playing with the "Tipo Calle" while the page is loading makes dillo segfault. If "Remote CSS" is disabled, it doesn't happen (also OK in dillo-2.0). 3.- New web site design We have a new banner and after finding a good color palette it may be ready to renew the site before 2.1 is announced. 4.- Debian/Ubuntu packages (after 2.1 final is ready) 5.- Update "8 years" page (it's nine) Yes, I should have done it already... 6.- Configurable key bindings. I'm reviewing this with Tim. Hopefully it will make it into the 2.1 release. 7.- Memory usage statistics Scott has posted some data on this, in another thread. I'll answer there. I'd be working on 5, 6 and 3. Volunteers please assign yourselves to the pending points. BTW, if you have important points to add to the list, please say so. Image callback race condition

I am logging the creation and destruction of DilloImage structures (patches attached) and I have confirmed that sometimes the image callbacks run after the Image is freed. patch: a_Capi_get_flags and following redirection

When an image on a page wouldn't load due to redirection, I would isolate the image, and often notice that message about Content-Length not matching message body. The reason is in a_Capi_open_url(), where reload is set by checking a_Capi_get_flags() for CAPI_IsCached. It follows the redirection, determines the Location URL isn't cached, and makes another HTTP request for the original URL. The cache entry data for that URL ends up containing the body from the first request with the header and body from the second request appended to it. Ah, but sometimes we want to follow redirection for get_flags. - the download check in capi - the load_stylesheet check in html.cc, assuming that we want to make that work with redirection at some point. - load_now for images in html.cc and the rest don't really matter too terribly much either way. So, unable to think of anything nice or clever, I added an argument to get_flags specifying whether redirection should be followed.

Hi there, Please excuse me for being silent. Life has poured a few other important things to do over me (e.g. next week I have to move to another apartment). A patch for Instant client-side redirects is fresh in the repo. It took some time to develop because the whole idle/timeout mechanism needs a new API that allows to cancel queued functions. I didn't change the old API (the next release will keep it) but took some time to analyze and it may help with the redraw issue Johannes worked with, and also with hard-to-reproduce crashes. IIRC, Tim asked why several functions trigger from timeouts. Dillo is async. and the main driving function for I/O is Cache_process_queue(). This function is not reentrant, thus timeouts/idle calls allow for it to finish before a new action is taken. In general, there're several parts of dillo that need a more formal working definition or API. They've come to be with the implementation and it'd be good to define and document them, and hence not to have to go through all the involved code to find out how to implement something. I'll review the custom-keys patch series next, and try to re-start the work for the 2.1 release. Please test the patch. I've looked into this a little more and what I had originally proposed is not possible for the simple reason that so many of these sites use Javascript for Dynamic HMTL purposes for example displaying login errror messages and the actual login form . It would make sense to try and implement full javascript support. To get Javascript support, Dillo would have to have DOM (Document Object Model) implemented into it. I've had a look at the dpi documentation and from what I can gather is if there was a javascript dpi, Dillo would send a page to a dpi, the dpi does processing and then send the modified page back to Dillo to display. It poses the question whether it put been more efficient to put javascript into a dpi or into Dillo itself? I've had a quick look at the spidermonkey document and I think I know how it works although I'll have to tinker around with the code to get my heard round it Hopefully, I can then have a better picture on what would be required to implement it into Dillo. Hi I have a cnm minibook which is part of a little Linux laptop family of mini laptops that use low powered Mipsel processors running Lnux. An unofficial site is here: http://linuxlaptopforum.ark2webdesign.co.uk/index.php One of the users has come up with a Linux distro called 3MX which uses IceWeseal but has also Dillo. The reason for this is because IceWeasel is a bit slow due to the low spec processor. Dillo runs far better than IceWeasel and would be an ideal replacement if it had the functionality of Javascript. Rather than somebody trying to get full Javascript suport for Dillo, I was thinking along the lines of partial Javascript support. The bare minimum would be to access websites that use Javascript to allow logins to forums etc. If any more functionality could be added so that for example social network sites like facebook or bebo then that would be great.On a personal note, I don't mind the lack of CSS when displaying pages on Dillo due to the small screen size of the minibook so any Javascript concerning that is not necessary. It is theoritcally possible as I use the noscript plugin on Firefox on my home PC which blocks javascript from certain 3rd party sites from running. I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts if the above is achievable and if so what would be the best Javascript engine to use with Dillo to achive this? Hey folks :) attached is a patch that implements http digest authentication. Some thoughs: * add-md5.patch adds md5.{c,h}, a BSD licensed md5 implementation by L. Peter Deutsch from [0] * the digest logic resides in digest.c * I adapted a lot of challenge parsing code from Jeremys basic auth to better suit my needs, sorry for the big patch, but this reduces code duplication (even mailman thinks the patch is too big >,<) * rfc2617 is a bit fuzzy about the quoted strings in the challenge. strings are enclosed in double quotes, but it is not specified (or I overlooked it..) how double quotes within this string should be escaped. I intuitively escaped them with a \, and apache2 plays along nicely. So does my code. Funny thing is, neither one of the mayor browsers (I tested ff, epiphany, opera, konqueror, ie6) can cope with realms containing quotes... Am I missing something here? * http digest can provide integrity protection for the request body by computing a hash over the request body, but I have no pointer to the request body, only the request URL. We might need to pass the whole request object (is there such a thing?) to the auth code instead of just the url. The code is there, just the pointer is missing. The code in auth.c will select the method without integrity protection for now, hoping that the server will accept both auth and auth-int. * there is a memory leak (well, at least one that I am aware of) in a_Auth_get_auth_str (grep 'this leaks memory' auth.c). This function is called for each request dillo makes to a host using http auth. For basic authentication the challenge response is always the same, so a reference to that string is stored in the realm and it is freed with its destruction. For digest authentication a different response is needed for each request (the request uri and a nonce_counter needs to be updated), so a new string has to be generated for each request. This should be easily fixable, but I didn't looked into that yet (need to touch the callers code). That's it :) feedback is welcome! Hi, for quite some while I've been trying to add support for the @import directive in CSS. The problem is that it creates a cyclic dependency between CssParser and DilloHtml: CssParser now calls a_Html_load_stylesheet(). This is extremely ugly and needs to be decoupled somehow. Anyway, attached is what I currently have - cleanup ideas welcome. Note, that we also need to use the URL of the current stylesheet to resolve relative URLs in @import. This is not implemented yet. The line is now wrapped. But after a post, dillo will crash (after sending the post, a post sent will be recieved by the webbserver before dillo crashes). I can't find where and why dillo crash. Segfault on sites requiring authentication

Whenever I visit http://puppyisos.org/isos (puppy / linux), Dillo segfaults. The reason is that in some cases the variable Client_bw is NULL. However, some functions depend on it and access its member variables. Client_bw is initialized in Cache_process_queue() (src/cache.c). When authentication is required, this variable is passed over to Cache_auth_entry() which sets a timeout. Its callback (Cache_auth_callback()) opens up a dialog asking for the credentials and then calls a_Nav_reload() with the Client_bw as its first parameter. Finally in a_Nav_cancel_expect() Client_bw's member variable nav_expecting is used and as bw is NULL, Dillo segfaults. I came up with a small patch that removes Cache_auth_callback() and Cache_auth_entry() as I have not seen any advantages in delaying the authentication popup. The next thing I did was to show the dialog on condition that Client_bw is not NULL and that we have finished the transfer (At least I hope CA_Close is the proper flag for doing so). There were various unnecessary checks in src/nav.c. They compared bw with NULL. In my opinion the affected functions (a_Nav_expect_done, a_Nav_push and a_Nav_repush) should never be called if you cannot be sure that bw is not NUL. What is your view on this subject? Unfortunately, my approach does not solve the original problem that caused Client_bw being NULL. Furthermore, the patch introduces a new bug: The dialog pops up when reloading the site but after having entered the correct credentials or having pressed the ``Cancel'' button, it appears again. Any ideas? While digging deeper into the code, I noticed that we make heavy use of timers for popups and reloading pages? Is there any special reason for it? --Tim

I was going to update the dillorc comment for load_images (still mentions the old dedicated button), and... to developers, it's in the Tools button's menu now, but to users, it's the Settings button because that's what the tooltip says. We should standardize on one name or the other.

For instance, sometimes it is necessary to move the mouse over the rendering area to get a refresh. Sometimes buttons don't draw. I don't know what may be fixed/workarounded in Dillo and what may be FLTK2's fault. So the first you can do is to get it to run in OSX and to start investigating the problems. I went to add a bug to the database today and found that it always returns errors when I attempt to file bugs using dillo. I ended up having to use firefox instead. The specific error is: Request Entity Too Large The requested resource /cgi-bin/bugtrack/Dillo_insert.cgi does not allow request data with POST requests, or the amount of data provided in the request exceeds the capacity limit. I checked with 'wc' and the data wasn't even half the limit. So, dillo is behaving somehow incorrectly. I'm writing here about it instead of filing a new bug because even the short description above is twice as big as the bug tracker allows... and it has no facilities for discussion or notification. -- Scott

This looks like a horizontal version of the previous problem I reported. The online example is http://rest-client.heroku.com/rdoc/fr_class_index.html The text that sticks out of the left of the coloured area is dead: you can't select it or click it, and if you drag another window over it slowly from from left to right then it doesn't redisplay properly. Something funny is happening with this URL http://marcofrasca.wordpress.com/2009/03/18/updated-paper/ In Dillo, all of the first paragraph except for the last line has disappeared. Also, if you click and drag around that line you can make it disappear too. It reappears as soon as you drag the window anywhere. I have stripped this down to a minimal example (attached). Both lines of the style file have to be present to get the effect. Interestingly, in Firefox this example also only shows the bottom line of the paragraph, but it puts it right at the top of the screen. So it looks as though Dillo sort of understands that most of the paragraph is invisible, but does not put it in the right place? Regards, Jeremy Henty

[patch]: fix compiler warning in CustShrinkTabPager

The CustShrinkTabPager class generates a gcc warning because it has virtual functions but its destructor is not virtual. This patch adds the virtual destructor and stops the warning. NB: there may be a case for rejecting this patch if we're really concerned about the performance of virtual functions (one extra indirection per call). FLTK deliberately avoids virtual destructors whenever possible for just this reason. I seriously doubt that this patch makes any impact on Dillo, but that's just IMHO. Regards, Jeremy Henty

Feel free to suggest how it could be more useful. You can see we're still getting lots of small leaks from the CSS parser, though the big ones have been fixed by recent commits. Hi, Please excuse me for being silent these days. It's being full of activities for me. Besides the regular job, I'm moving to another place and have a trip out of the city the next weekend. Rolling a release needs more than a couple spare days so, it will have to wait. I'll surely have more time when April starts, if I have some time before that, I'll try to answer the pending emails. Hey folks :) I've got a new toy (the Neo FreeRunner) and dillo2 runs quite nicely on that little device, but there are some problems: * there is no way to create bookmarks Adressed in the second patch which adds an add bookmark button to the main toolbar. * the scrollbars are unusable without a stylus A more natural way of scrolling on embedded devices with touchscreens is finger scrolling. A proof of concept is attached as the third patch. Acceleration would be a nice feature for big pages. * buttons on dialogs are too small Proposed solution: There is code for creating dialogs in src/dialog.cc for a_Dialog_choice5 that creates the dialog window without relying on fltks choice(). We could generalize that and use it for all dialogs. This way we could resize the buttons and stack them vertically on top of each other. What do you think? Justus ps: the first patch is a small cleanup patch. all three patches should apply cleanly independently in spite of being a patch set)

As this is my first post to the list: hello, I'm the one that ported (or broke, depending on your the point of view) dillo 0.8.6 for the iRex iLiad e-book reader; my alias in mobileread.com is Antartica. I've been reading the lists for some time now, but didn't thought I had anything to share yet. But... I agree with Justus in that panning is the easiest method to scroll in embedded devices; the scroll bar is very small and enlarging it wastes too much screen state. For the iliad port of dillo 0.8.6 I did exactly what Justus is proposing of left-button-does-panning (albeit in a hackish way, as I hardcoded that behaviour). For reference, the patch to old dillo 0.8.6 is in: http://projects.mobileread.com/iliad/users/antartica/dillo/dillo-patch-spli… I was actually doing the same for dillo2, but only have it partly-done (see attach). I would love to have Justus code merged in mainline, as it implements that functionality neatly and it would alleviate me from finishing my hack :). Right now I can't test Justus patch, but I had one error to fix in mine: it didn't pan when showing images. Its worth checking if Justus patch have that right. Anyway, you all are doing an excellent job in keeping dillo relevant. It is really a nice piece of work :). Congrats. Hi there, I happen to be enjoying a much needed holiday week! :-) The plan is to come back around near wednesday 25. In the meanwhile, I leave you with the following issues lurking in my list to be considered. Maybe all of them can be left to the release after 2.1, but maybe not: [ ] https dialog bombing issue. BUG#868 When enabled, multiple https requests to the same site result in dialog bombing. The https dpi is disabled by default in Dillo. Anyway, in Debian, there's a security warning against dillo for not checking certificates (I don't know what version of dillo they use, nor why they enable https.) [ ] Jump to #anchor doesn't work correctly. The idle timeout doesn't work reliably (an old bug). [ ] Implement @import statement in STYLE element. [ ] What will we do with xhtml? FF doesn't validate. BUG#732 This would be interesting to define. (already suggested as discussion material in another thread). [ ] "-fno-rtti -fno-exceptions" gcc: 64KB less. Enabling this switches reduces the binary size. [ ] dpi for "view page source" (it re-uses search capability). Waiting since a long time... [-] BUG#892 prefs bg_color is not working Johannes was working on related things... [ ] META refresh: "instant client-side redirect". [ ] META refresh: URL='<URI>' case. I plan to implement both when I'm back (and to include them in dillo-2.1).
