I've just started work on support for the "float" property but I'm already running into difficulties when trying to add the detection for its values. Every website gets screwed up after applying my patch. Any ideas? --Tim

HTML parser bug

There is a bug in the HTML parser: Tags within quotes are interpreted: <input type="text" name="test" value="<p>asdf</p>" /> I think it is line 3754f (src/html.cc) which evokes the unwanted behaviour. I'd fix this bug by introducing two variables: The first one states whether we're currently inside of a quote and the second one stores its type (single or double quote). As long as the current character does not equal the type, all characters in between the starting and ending quote will be ignored. Of course we should be also able to deal with escaped quotes allowing constructs similar to the following one: <input type="text" name="test" value="<p>\"asdf\"</p>" /> --Tim

dpid not starting automatically

I am starting Dillo right away from the source code. Thus, it is not installed in any of the directories listed in $PATH. Dillo gives me the following errors as it does not seem to be able to find the dpid binary: Dpi_check_dpid_ids: Connection refused Dpi_start_dpid (child): No such file or directory Dpi_start_dpid: can't start dpid What do you think of adding some code that tries to execute the local dpid binary first (dpid/dpid) before looking into the system paths? --Tim

patch: anchors no longer words

A few days ago, I tried to make addParbreak() work properly when listitems have anchors in the beginning (that's why they often show breaks before their contents), but it was quite icky -- and required more extensive changes than I expected. So instead, here's what we get if we pull the anchors out of the Word list and store them separately. Less icky.

While thinking about stylesheet issues I noticed a UI problem: the stylesheet menu uses URLs as the labels of the menu items. This is unfortunate because some sites have stylesheets with insanely long URLs. (Try Wikipedia if you don't believe me!) So I'm attaching a patch that trims long URLs in the menu. This is just a UI change - no functionality is affected. Here's a demonstration of the patch on the front page of Wikipedia: http://starurchin.org/dillo/stylesheet_menu/ Notes: Since the label is no longer always the same as the label the callback must find the URL elsewhere. We put it in the user_data() of the menu item. We just copy the pointer to the DilloUrl structure, so we are assuming it will never be free()-ed while the menu is up. If I'm wrong about this the patch will need to be revised. We get a nice cleanup for free: we loose the mysterious magic constant 5 in the callback. (Bonus points if you can see what that magic constant is! Double bonus points if you can see why the code still worked when I erroneously left it in!) Please comment, Jeremy Henty

EAGAIN loop in IO_read

Hi all. This might be FreeBSD specific issue but I have EAGAIN loop in IO_read. I don't know anything yet why this happens but at some point read function keeps returning EAGAIN in IO_read and nothing is read. Do you have any idea how to investigate this further? Q: why do we defer loading linked stylesheets?

Why do we defer loading the CSS stylesheets named in <link> elements until the <head> element is closed? In html.cc, Html_tag_close_head() has the comment "charset is already set, load remote stylesheets now", but I don't understand the significance of the charset. I am asking because I'd like to patch Dillo to add @import-ed stylesheets to the browser window popup menu, just as it already does for <link>-ed stylesheets. At the moment this causes all sorts of code branches (is the @import in a <link>-ed file or an embedded <style>, if the latter, is it in the <head> or not). It would be much simpler to just immediately load every style file at the same time as it is added to html->ccsUrls , but that would change the behaviour to load <link>-ed styles immediately instead of at the end of the <head> element. Hi, On some sites I get weird fonts. Today I got to isolate the problem. See attached file. Here it displays like this: http://www.dillo.org/test/xmp2.png The embedded CSS says: pre { font-family: MS Courier New, Courier, monospace; } If I remove "MS Courier New", it works OK. Big changes in DPI framework and API

Hi, Today the big work on DPI/DPIP was committed! The new framework and API is easier to use and more powerful. Lots of bugs and constraints were removed in the process. It was a lot of work but now is easier to fix and implement new things. After all the DPI framework was growing as new needs arose and it needed a rewrite since long ago. There're still pending patches and docs. Details are in the Changelog and Mercurial repo (hg log -v|less). One of them is the new select() based file dpi. It should be faster and use less resources (all happens in a single process now). Note: currently the code uses Internet Domain sockets instead of Unix domain sockets. This was initially meant for MINIX, but in the process several bugs were fixed, the code restructured, added more error handling and improved in general. In the future we may go back to UDS, but the cleanup gains will remain. Please test and enjoy. ...and remember to "dpidc stop" before "make install-strip". -- Cheers Jorge.-

[patch]: fix the default <th> style to match <td>

I had assumed that the <th> style would be the same as the <td> style but with bold and centering added, so I was surprised to see that it's not. The <td> style has some border styling and padding that the <th> style does not, which seems wrong to me. I'm attaching a patch that brings the <th> style in line with my expectations, plus a test file and before/after screenshots. Please comment! Regards, Jeremy Henty

Congratulations on the big DPI reworking! Meanwhile I'd like to submit some cleanups for Html_tag_cleanup_at_close(), whose logic is currently pretty opaque. Hi, The latest cleanups and whitespace handling patches have come like a fresh breeze removing unnecessary code. They're good for better code clarity. One of the few regressions I've noticed is extra underlining of links (the space before the first word's letter). As I understand it, the purpose of the w3c_plus_heuristics preference is to control whether Dillo will force close some tags when it sees an unmatched close tag. But it seems to have no effect! If you try this HTML: <html> <head><title></title></head> <body> <p> <table><tr><td><s></table> </body> </html> then the <s> tag is closed no matter what w3c_plus_heuristics is! The bug is in Html_tag_cleanup_at_close() in html.cc, in this code: /* Look for the candidate tag to close */ stack_idx = html->stack->size() - 1; while (stack_idx && (cmp = (new_idx != html->stack->getRef(stack_idx)->tag_idx)) && ((w3c_mode && Tags[html->stack->getRef(stack_idx)->tag_idx].EndTag == 'O') || ((!w3c_mode && (Tags[html->stack->getRef(stack_idx)->tag_idx].EndTag == 'O')) || Tags[html->stack->getRef(stack_idx)->tag_idx].TagLevel < Tags[new_idx].TagLevel))) { --stack_idx; } The indentation makes it appear that the comparison between the TagLevel fields is bracketed with !w3c_mode but both the indentation and the bracketing are wrong. At http://naturalhistory.museumwales.ac.uk/sharpshooters/ two of the image tags specify a size for one dimension, giving it as 100%. When one dimension is auto and the other is percentage, it doesn't scale properly. I see that calculation using percentage has to be in textblock because it uses availWidth or availHeight, so... is there a deep need to keep the auto/abs case in Image's sizeRequestImpl instead of Textblock's calcWidgetSize? I was just playing with adding all of the cases to calcWidgetSize and it looked like it was working except that an unloaded image with, e.g., height=100% alt=whatever would end up ridiculously wide because height_of_page / height_of_alt_text * width_of_alt_text is a large number.

flicker at reload

Hello I'm new to both dillo and fltk. I'm trying to do two things and I'm hoping you can point me in the right directions on how to do it. 1) flicker at reload When doing a reload my screen flickers and I'd like to get rid of that. I first tried the dillorc option buffered_drawing=0/1/2 but that didn't make any difference. I then tried to find the source where the screen is cleared before redrawing the page. I followed the source of redraw() until layout.cc where topLevel->draw() is executed but I cannot find its implementation. Is the flickering an fltk issue or where is the screen cleared? 2) externally trigger reload I'd like to trigger a page reload externally by another application. I searched a bit about IPC mechanisms of fltk but didn't find any. So I'm thinking about using a UNIX fifo or the system signal SIGUSR2. Do you think this is a good approach? Many thanks Stefan.

textarea multiline input bug

In textareas (multiline form input), say for example: http://translate.google.ca/translate_t ... if I first enter the following line into the textarea: yo soy anarco-capitalista ... and after submitting it, I edit it (the previous contents are retained -- although I suspect internally there might be something broken -- not sure where it breaks exactly.), by inserting a newline at the very beginning (pressing enter), then backspacing (removing the newline) to make it appear exactly the same, then resubmitting the form, strange stuff happens. (I remember earlier posting experiences some of my lines getting duplicated, and other strange stuff. I think it only happens when I edit stuff at the beginning.)

I just learned that some languages don't use spaces but can only break in certain places, and that they tend to insert Zero Width Space to make life easier for software that doesn't know the complex rules. So here's a quick little patch for them: http://www.dillo.org/test/zero_width_space.patch PS I did just start trying to move the ideographic test to dw, but I got stuck when I realized that I can't exactly call fltk's utf8decode() directly in Textblock, and am not excited by the idea of calling it through Layout.

What's the status of USE_TABLES?

Typing Bug when moving Dillo on DWM's Virtual Desktops

I'm finally tackling a typing bug with Dillo, and have found it occurs when moving the Dillo browser to DMW's other virtual desktops. It doesn't occur when Dillo is first started. Nothing, if anything at all, shows within gdb. And, I can't really get to the debug output of DWM as I'm running nvidia proprietary drivers which blanks the terminal once X is started. I do have a laptop for which I can further investigate the DWM debug data, but figured I should post what I know to see if any of you notice similar. The basic bug scenario, move the Dillo browser to another Virtual Desktop within DWM and start typing (within the url field or within the Google search field.) I notice only certain keys type their characters and most others will either type nothing or may clear the entire field (ie. clear line) Possible a meta key sticks when moving the browser to another desktop?? -- Roger http://rogerx.freeshell.org

Long time no post! Here's a fix for an outstanding TODO in html.cc. It replaces the code that creates the HTML META REFRESH warning (which sends HTML to Html_write_raw()) with a function that creates the widgets directly. There are still a few issues: * The HTML parser in table.cc does not create table widgets if USE_TABLES is not defined. Perhaps this code should do the same? * The new widgets do not have 'width="100%"' set, so the horizontal layout is slightly different. * The redirect link colour does not reflect whether the link URL has been visited. * It would be nice if the widgets and the redirect link were styled from the User Agent style in css.cc . I couldn't figure out how to do that so I just copied a few things like the link colour and text decoration. If someone tells me how to do this properly I'll revise the code. Please comment! experimental patch: image loading options "same domain", "same host"

I just put together a somewhat hacky patch to add "same host" and "same domain" for image loading from the tools button (or dillorc) http://www.dillo.org/test/img_loading_options.patch I ran on it as long as I could tolerate images over dialup (not long :), so here it is, and I will clean it up if there is interest shown in getting it into dillo. (I would probably want to change the names of the dillorc choices for image loading, make the internal value into an enum, look at the loadImages/autoload_image code duplication, etc., etc... Oh, and look up how to fix the tools menu width...)

View page source suggestions

Currently, the "View page source" right-click context menu isn't available below the rendered html -- so if the actual html page is very small and/or dillo's window is very big, right clicking the bottom half (for example) of the browser does nothing :\. Also, is there a way to have the source viewed in one's preferred text editor? :b (read: gvim)

nytimes links and redirection

I'd been in the habit of letting wget retrieve nytimes links, but today I finally fought with it long enought to learn a few things. - wget works because it remembers cookies while redirecting. I was sure that enabling cookies required a flag, but nope. - If I increase the maximum redirect level in dillo, it gets up to 9 before nytimes relents and figures out that I don't want to give it any cookies and provides me with the page. - If I change the www to www10, it works immediately and doesn't bother with redirection at all.

I was trying the new search functionality a bit more and found this (it's also present in my Dec 2008 dillo*). With the page: <table> <tr><td>no close-tr <tr><td>has a close-tr</tr> <tr><td>here's another line</tr> </table> if I search for "rh", it finds one instance of it split between the second and third table rows. * My older dillos were lost in a tragic "I don't think I need my CVS stuff anymore" accident.

corvid, you have just fixed an issue with horizontal scrolling during search. While testing it I realized, that horizontal scrolling during search does not work at all with plain text. Any idea why? Cheers, Johannes

Hi, Here are some pending issues which I've partially sorted by priority (at least the top half). Please add the missing ones and let's try to finish sorting it, with a view to planify our work. * Make DIV-based pages render correctly. This is the most visible rendering fault in Dillo. The textblock doesn't have a way to handle it (not implemented). IIRC I'm willing to dig into it and Johannes will help. e.g. http://www.advogato.org/faq.html * Add blocker (this also has to do with privacy). A full RE-based one may have significant overhead (test required), but simple string-matching may do most of the trick. I've also thought for a long time that a "don't load from other sites" preference may help a lot. The whole topic needs some thought but it's not hard to implement. e.g. doubleclick. * Handle negative values in CSS. e.g. wikipedia. * What will we do with xhtml? To render or not to render... FF doesn't validate. BUG#732 One solution is to add a notification widget area below the control panel that hides/unhides as the find bar, to warn when a xhtml file has detected bugs (we'd also move the meta refresh warning to display here). I already have a simple patch to add xhtml rendering. The widget implemetation is the missing part. It should be much simpler than the close button in each tab. :-) e.g. http://planet.postgresql.org/ * Jump to #anchor doesn't work correctly. It looks like a timing issue, but the idle-call API needs a review as a whole. * dpi for "view page source" (it re-uses search capability). This requires a check of the current data-passing inside DPIP. * Improve the DPI development/debug framework. * https dialog bombing issue. BUG#868 AKA make https dpi a server (i.e. not a filter dpi). * Render bug at http://www.directfb.org/ (and its links). The table has too wide a first column. Back/Fwd solves it. *   handling in fltk.org The relevant point is to define a consistent way to handle whitespace in the textblock. * FTP download doesn't work?! -- Cheers Jorge.-

Hi, Here's a prototype patch that does the work. It's not yet optimized nor polished nor throughly tested, and it leaks Web structures, but it illustrates very well the idea, and finishing it shouldn't be hard. As said in CCCwork.txt it would be good to build the whole chain in one single step (for simplicity) and to define a standard way to end/abort the CCC (which I've given some thought). If muses decide to pay me a visit, I may develop a patch for this soon. :-) -- Cheers Jorge.-

Hi, is possible to switch to fltk1.3? I sent a lot of emails to fltk developers trying to get the license issue of fltk2 (http://www.fltk.org/str.php?L2198+P0+S-2+C0+I0+E0+Qlicense) fixed but I still (after months of sent emails) haven't gotten a reply. dillo is going to be removed from Debian and Ubuntu repositories because it depends on removed packages and the newest dillo release cannot be uploaded because fltk2 is not in the repositories and it cannot be accepted due to the license issue. newbie question about main loop...

Just learning about dillo; looks neat! We are investigating how best to "embed" html links within a 3D world, in much the same way old-time 'anchor nodes' were embedded in VRML. We were just thinking to have a separate tab, or if we got fancy, play with OpenGL transforms, etc. Unfortunately, one of the libraries we use for avatars (www.edgelib.com) *must* have the main loop, with everything else called during onRedraw(), etc. Is it even conceivable to use dillo in this manner? best regards - Chris Nicholas
