make instant meta-refresh optional?

I was just trying to look up a local place on Google Maps, and found that the page wouldn't render any more. So I investigated, and it turns out to be a combination of two problems: - Dillo now follows instant meta-refresh commands, instead of letting the user decide. - Google Maps redirects to a 'mobile' version of the site, which fails to recognize Dillo's user-agent string and returns WML instead of HTML. (I sent them info about this bug a few moments ago; hopefully they'll fix it) Would it be possible to make that first one optional? Maybe a config variable or something? I liked the old behavior much better. Dillo's jealous of Google

Dillo's *so* jealous of Google it won't let me see it! (So much for the open relationship thing :-) Log attached. I assume that the DENY message is from line 399 of src/capi.c, is that right? This certainly worked only a few days ago. What has changed? It's really not good that Dillo is by default silently denying me access to Google. How can this be improved? Regards, Jeremy Henty

Problem with fonts.

Hello, I have loaded Dillo Browser on to my ARM based embedded platform. Presently, I am facing a problem with fonts. The messages that I get while the browser comes up are --------------------------------------------------------------- bad font: variable ** WARNING **: preferred sans-serif font "helvetica Sans" not found. ** WARNING **: preferred serif font "helvetica Serif" not found. ** WARNING **: preferred monospace font "helvetica Sans Mono" not found. ** WARNING **: preferred cursive font "helvetica Sans" not found. ** WARNING **: preferred fantasy font "helvetica Sans" not found. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Also, the size of the text that appears on Dillo (On the ARM based system) appears very small. However, the same page if I open with Dillo running on a Linux PC, will show bigger fonts. So, my questions are: 1. How do I get rid of the "bad font" error message on my ARM-based system ? I have used LTIB as the unix based development platform. 2. How to overcome the font size problem ? The other day, I saw another of those pages about using :visited and display in order to allow others to learn whether the user has visited a page. (I remember Johannes pointing to a page about this last year, too.) I wonder whether it would be sensible to have a dillorc option defaulting to NO for whether to use :visited.

line-height

Just committed some line-height code that Johannes and I wrote. When line-height is less than the font's ascent+descent, unhighlighting gets confused. I think it has to do with using the line dimensions for 'area' for drawing the background. I'll dig into it a little more later on. PS I see that firefox puts more space between its paragraphs than we do. Their value seems to be related to the font size, or the default font size, or something. Is there anything deep behind our use of 9?

Just a thought I had. The web is filled with horrible generated html with lines a thousand characters long. With this (and parse_embedded_css), those lines become more tolerable. I would commit it in two pieces, of course.

I just mistyped an address on our site, got a 404, and noticed that I get an HTML bug msg about the DTD. Hi Alan I had actually read quite a bit about seed and I had downloaded some sample code and played with it in the past. However your idea never occurred to me. I think it would be a fantastic idea to make the JavaScript within the layout engine talk to the "enclosing" GUI that is also written in JavaScript. I read through your blog, thanks for the link and your writings. I have been going around in circles for an amount of time I am too ashamed to confess. I have decided to write the back end and post pone the front end till I sort this out in my head. I would however still like to be a part of any project you might start related to this. I hope this won't come across the wrong way, I really like Dillo but I am wondering what is it's main niche it is planning to fill? Certainly it is fast and certainly it is small but is the target audience just people looking for a general purpose browser? Would it's speed and small size not make it ideal for being embedded in another application? Would this not be something that Gecko and Webkit cannot easily offer? I only have limited resources and time but I bet a corporate sponsor might fund this. Alan, I hope your studying goes well, sounds like someone else is sleep deprived too-Patrick

Problem using "Textblock" Class.

Hi, I am trying to implement the support for using the tab or other keyboard keys to set focus on web page links. As part of this, I started out with adding a new Class and would like to use some sort of iterator in this class. I would also like to use the 'Textblock' object to retrieve the style->x_link for a word. However, when I try to initialize the Textblock object in my new class, I get a linker error. The details are as under: The basic skeletal code for new class is: ======================================== findlinks.cc namespace dw { namespace core { FindLinks::FindLinks () { widget = NULL; iterator = NULL; } FindLinks::~FindLinks () { if (iterator) delete iterator; } void FindLinks::getlink (void) { MSG("\n Hi !! I came to findlinks"); Textblock *textblock = new Textblock (false); } I have included "dw/textblock.hh" in the above file and also included core.hh. dillo crash when using a <select> field during page load

G'day, When I click on a <select><option>option 1</option>...</select> field and move the mouse through the items while a page is still loading, dillo segfaults. I can quite reliably reproduce this with the country selection field at the top center of lenovo.com. patch: drawing image map areas

This draws the shapes in image maps, which is quite nice when not loading images. There are two redrawing problems: If I try http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/ a little bit of the map is visible at the bottom of the viewport initially (geometry 850x630). The rectangles are visible, but not the polygons. If I page down or switch to another desktop and back, all is well. If I try http://www.sbrady.com/hotsource/html/imgmaps.html because it has bigger rectangles, when I scroll line by line, I get lines in my rectangle corresponding to the edge of the view. No problem with circles or polygons. All I'm doing is calling the fltk shape-drawing code through fltkviewbase, so I'd expect them all to work or break in the same way. I will probably change FltkViewBase::drawArc() so that (x,y) is the center like one would expect. That tricked me at first, and I might have been the one who wrote that code in the first place. I might make an additional FltkViewBase::drawPolygon() that accepts the SimpleVector of points and then calls addvertex() a lot rather than one addvertices() call. Slower, but they're just image maps, and the pointArray in Polygon::draw() here is too complicated (I had to look it up to get it quite right).

Hi, I am trying to put in a patch to use the tab or other keyboard keys to set focus on web page links. I started implementing this based on Corvid's suggestion as mentioned under: 1. borrowing from the dw/findtext.cc iteration code. 2. checking when style->x_link != -1 or you're currently on an embedded form widget. I have implemented the first part but still needs test. I have a question while implementing the second part. Can you please tell me how to determine if we are on an embedded form widget currently. cookie 32-bit time wrapping and possible gcc problem

Tried running my test/cookies program and got two failures from the 32-bit timestamp wrapping tests. Turned out that I had -O2 set. -O succeeds, and no optimization succeeds. If I insert a MSG("exptime+local_shift %ld\n", exptime + local_shift); after setting local_shift in Cookies_expires_attr(), it works even with -O2. This is with gcc-4.3.3. I'm going to get 4.4.3 and see what happens... PS I don't particularly expect anyone to rush off and try it for themselves, but if you do, it is good to run 'dpidc stop' between runs.

Hi Everyone. I think there may be people on this list from Chile, I hope this message finds you all safe and your situation stable. Sorry in advance if this email is too long. I am attracted to Dillo because of it's relatively small code base, the sloccount command gives me about 50K. Webkit is almost 2 million and it's not even a full browser, just an engine. I have a insane idea. I would like to create command line tools/browser hybrids. I would like to strip out all networking ability and add in full file system access, perhaps through special <read-io> <write-io> tags to a Dillo fork. The problem I would like to solve is a way to create a very simple rapid application desktop environment for chemists to use. GTK, QT, WxWidgets etc all take time to learn but many people can throw some HTML together. I was thinking that I could make small dillo-fied applications that the scientists could then alter to suit there specific needs. All access would be through local files. My Son was diagnosed with Autism a couple of years ago, he is getting much better now but we have taken a huge financial hit( >40K) I expect to be back on track by the fall, we are already pulling out of it. My project would be open source but for profit, I do/will have some capital to put towards my project. I am not sure what would be required to complete the CSS support and to add Javascript. I am not sure if the Dillo community wants these things but my networked crippled version could be a testing ground for features that would not necessarily have to go back into Dillo. If anyone wanted to help, what would be a suitable donation to achieve these goals be? Although I am learning I still suck at C/C++, despite this I can also contribute coding time if someone could spare a bit of time mentoring? Am I totally nuts? Could something like this be done? Issue with Mapping keys into Dillo Browser.

Hello, I am using Dillo 2.2 on RHEL desktop version 5. I am trying to simulate a working Dillo on my desktop before moving the same to my ARM based Embedded Platform. Presently, I am able to run Dillo and browse web pages. However this requires use of Mouse. I would like to eliminate mouse and use only keyboard. Further, I would like the LEFT/RIGHT arrow keys on my keyboard to move to a previous/next link on the currently opened web page. Further, I would like that upon pressing "ENTER" key at this time, the previously selected link is opened. Basically, I would like to use LEFT/RIGHT and ENTER keys to navigate through an already opened web page (Without Mouse). Can any body please help me how to achieve this using Dillo. Hi, when I open http://misc.andi.de1.cc/dillo and I right-click on the page and select "View page source", I can see the html source. Contrary: http://misc.andi.de1.cc/dillo/?dillo The ?dillo is ignored by the server, so the same page is displayed. But I cannot get the source for the page. Dillo shows simply an empty tab then. earthquake

Hi, Just in case you hear/read something related to the earthquake in Chile, it was stronger than the one in 1985, but we're OK and although we're in the central part of the country, it is roughly 400 Km. north from the more affected area. You'll see impressive images, but that's not the main part, it's just a "front page" photo impact. This country is full of quake-resistant buildings, and usually the ones that collapse are the oldest ones or the new structures were people decided to steal money (as with the elevated highways). When dillorc's fullwindow_start=YES (which is supposed to hide the widget panels on startup), it doesn't actually do this. (It does hide it after you click on a link or type in a url.) My guess is it was assumed that the first thing you want to do when opening a browser is to type in a url (or click a bookmark link, etc) -- but this is not true. (Many times I want to simply load a single page and then close it.)

Dillo 2.2 from a web designer's perspective

I have always had a soft spot for the Dillo web browser. It is the only graphical browser I am able to get to run on an old Gateway Handbook I have lurking around. Dillo is a browser which runs nicely on Windows 3.11 era machines while any other current browser plain simply does not run on a computer from that era. So, I like to keep up to date with what's happening with Dillo. Well, poking around I noticed Dillo 2.2 with CSS support was release just over a week ago. Indeed, most web pages look nicer with the limited CSS Dillo 2.2 supports than with no CSS at how. Naturally, I tested how Dillo 2.2 renders CSS. Which means going to the Acid2 test at http://acid2.acidtests.org/ This is what I got: http://www.samiam.org/dillo/Dillo-2.2-acid2test.png Now, I understand that it's going to take a lot of time and effort from you developers to get a smiley face on this page. I don't expect a Dillo 2.3 to be released tomorrow with a nice smiley face when taking the Acid 2 test. However, what I think is important to do is to have it so web designers who care about Dillo compatibility have a way of hiding CSS which doesn't look good in Dillo while having their pages look fine in other browsers. I was able to use it to have my page look reasonable in Dillo 2.2. So, I have a request: Please do not "fix" the @media all "bug" in Dillo's CSS support until http://acid2.acidtests.org gives us the entire smiling face. This way, web designers can continue to keep their sites looking reasonably nice in Dillo. Hi there, Just committed a patch for "view source" as a filter dpi. The source is simple and is well commented. There're three modes: plain text, numbered plain text, numbered html. The latter one is the default. Just give the source a look to change modes. It is very simple to tweak and improve. I remember somebody asked for "view source" in a favorite editor. From the dpi is simple. e.g. save to /tmp/source.txt and execl your editor. Comments, patches, cool styles, etc are welcomed. Enjoy! -- Cheers Jorge.-

fltk font issue

A few weeks ago, bug 940 was added. A segfault. The submitter gets it with Tiny Core. I don't see it with my non-TC setup, so I asked Colin about it. He suspected that it had to do with TC's dearth of fonts. http://www.fltk.org/str.php?L2319 was added yesterday, and is about someone with dillo-2.2 getting font crashes. fltk::setfont() calling fontopen(), which gets NULL from XftFontOpen() (as the manpage says can happen). Since this is a fltk2 thing, I think this will fall to us to fix. As for whether we simply want to stick something like if (!xftfont) return; after the fontopen() call, or we want to try harder in some way, I don't know yet.

Pretty much all of the changes that would be of interest to users are mentioned in the ChangeLog ( http://hg.dillo.org/dillo/file/tip/ChangeLog ) In configuration files: dillorc has new options http_max_conns and show_help, and the default for no_proxy has changed. keysrc has new options for save and for various motion commands. You can also use keysym values in the rules now. I think I have the website all updated except for the main page, and Jorge will do the freshmeat stuff.

I think this might be useful for some users that want to mime another browser in order to avoid vulnerabilities due to zero day security problems or that want to test their website with several browsers and User-Agent strings. Hello, here comes rc3, which contains a minor addition to the blackhole fix. On some systems processes get a SIGHUP before SIGTERM / SIGKILL on shutdown. How to use the tab or other keyboard keys to set foucs on web page links?

Hello All, I am using the Dillo on an embedded device for web browsing. Since this device does not support mouse or touchscreen, I have to use the keyboard(or some buttons). I found I cannot set the focus on these links using tab keys( Dillo 2.2-rc1). If there any key configuration settings to set the tab key? If not, I want to modify the source code to add this function, is there any example or related patches for reference? Thanks a lot! Yong

- Why does install-dpi-local put dpidc in ~/.dillo, anyway? Wouldn't that be unusual for it to be in anyone's path? - Do you think it would be silly to make a little manpage for dpidc? - I'm contemplating making dpidc's exit values distinguish between the cases of: 1) Bad usage. Wrong number of args. 2) I can't find the stuff to communicate with dpid (either because this the first use of dillo, or the dpi system has been changed). 3) Connection refused. I think dpid just isn't running right now. 4) Something is breaking while communicating with dpid.

I am currently working on adding CSS support for "display: inline" tags. They are commonly used for navigation menus. As these menus are nothing more than simple unordered lists (<ul>), the items are printed one below the other which wastes lots of space. The patch I came up with does only partially implement support for these tags: The items are correctly displayed within one line but I cannot figure out why there is so much empty space after each item. Perhaps somebody with a better understanding of the dw-code than me might have a look into the issue. If I am correct, the dw/textblock.cc is responsible for calculating the widths. Textblock::wordWrap() looks pretty promising as there is a variable (hasListitemValue) determining whether it is a list item and calculates values for lastLine->leftOffset and words->getRef(0)->effSpace depending on this state. --Tim

Hi, I want to start this 2010 year thanking all the people that have contributed to make Dillo what it is. It's been 10 years and a long way lays behind. Lots of people have shared their time/work/advice/help/money/. After all, what we have now is the addition of all those efforts. Thanks to you all!!! Dillo's game so far had been to support a subset with emphasis on efficiency and privacy. The game is never solved, the point is to decide well where to prune (see bottom line). Speaking of technology: Ten years ago it was images and tables, the FTP, then CGI, then cookies (the stateless HTTP, now with state), then frames (which faded 5 years later), then SGML (which was replaced by XML), then XML (which never succeeded over HTML tag soup). Then CSS (which is necessary these days. Despite IE never gave much for it). Somewhere in the middle there was java (and java beans), but it died. Then Flash, then AJAX, then silverlight, the cloud... IMHO, beyond the hyped technologies "du jour", Dillo is relevant as long as it's able to serve as an efficient information gathering tool, with emphasis on privacy. -- Cheers Jorge.-

A few hours ago, I started to wonder how much trouble it would be to make https.c understand gnutls instead of openssl. The answer is: If you borrow liberally from the public domain code in the gnutls manual, then not very much! So here's a toy for anyone who would like one: http://www.dillo.org/test/gnutls.0.patch Now we'll _have_ to have a release soon, because we're accumulating so many things to play with after release...
