Dillo confused by embedded NULL characters

http://makespace.org/ has some NULL characters in its header, which causes it to disappear in Dillo. Firefox and links have no problems. What's the fix? Regards, Jeremy Henty

Https remote certificate cannot be verified

The "The remote certificate cannot be verified (code 20)" dialog popup window, that presumably pops up when accessing an unverifiable https site, often pops up many times while loading a page -- probably a separate instance for each image? Can it not pop up only once? (per unverifiable https domain?) (And perhaps the current window title "Choice5" could be a bit more informative? And maybe there should be an option to save such certificates to avoid future warnings?)

Hi, just a headsup, that I plan to commit some changes for the CSS on <HTML> element issue that involve quite a few files. Basically it is a minor API change for StyleEngine, but as StyleEngine is called from quite a few places, the patch is rather big. Please let me know in case this is inconvenient atm. These days I've realized the press coverage was humongous. It's said that a thousand million saw a part of the rescue around the world. [bug]: CSS sets insanely huge vertical extent

This small bit of HTML (attached) renders with an enormous vertical extent in Dillo - I have to hold down the mouse in the lower half of the scrollbar for several seconds before the slider moves even one pixel! Strangely, if you take out the "<span>"s then the vertical extent is *much* smaller, although still far too large. What's going on? Regards, Jeremy Henty

Why isn't this working? My idea is to refresh my memory on this part of the code, and then to try to devise a way to implement 8 and 9. At the same time, working on this part will help for 6. Most probably we'll have to try to tackle these complex problems coordinating our effort/knowledge. Hi Johannes, Right, after editing etc/resolv.conf and setting nameserver ip after dillo is launched, it can now resolve WLAN addresses but still remains unreachable. However, local LAN published web pages can now display. So I'm sure wget will work within LAN but not WLAN. It looks like a gateway ip/ routing issue at this point. Is there a gateway ip related variable much like what nameserver is for the dns ip? Btw, does dillo support printing initiated via the web page's html script? Hi, I installed Dillo in LTIB and while the splash page went up, clicking links reported a dns error. I checked out dillorc and saw no setting related to dns. Trying a link to localhost also gave I/O errors. FWIW, so long we've had the HTML test suite, and the personal test pages each one of us develops. As you explained, the problem is how to automate HTML rendering tests. I hesitate to include an html test-page collection in the tarball because it would grow bigger and bigger and nobody would apply to test each one everytime a relevant change is made! :) I like the CSS checklist we have because it is sorted by property and provides test-cases we can reference by URL, and it lives outside the tarball so its size can grow independently. A fast way to check the tests is to provide an image with the correct rendering in the test page (maybe with an explanation too). It takes more time to prepare though, and each time you update the page you have to also update the screenshot. Quite a burden. I don't have a good solution yet. These days I've been working with Gecko and Dillo. Having the test page showed in both provides for a "dynamic screenshot" from Gecko. This avoids the burden of updating the image, with the advantage of showing how Gecko renders unespecified parts of the SPEC. An HTML test-page, with written explanations of what to check for, and two browsers is the fastest/simplest solution I see so far. (It also has the advantage of almost anyone being able to do the test). That would still require some amount of IPC, but it's less complicated than DPI, and certainly less wasteful since you don't have multiple instances loading the same UI, static libraries, etc. ~Benjamin

The browser patch is about as stable as I can get it, so I thought I'd send it in for your consideration. First the patch, then my comments: http://dillo-win32.sourceforge.net/files/dillo-r1705-win32-20100913-merge.d… I'd consider this "merge-ready" in terms of completeness, though I haven't much tested stability, and I'd need your opinion on coding style. This is a long patch (~1740 lines), with a lot of separate but closely-interconnected changes. I'd split it into smaller subpatches, but I'm not really sure how practical (or possible) that would be, so my apologies in advance for the length. I've run into a major impasse with DPI. Simply put, DPI is not portable to non-Unix systems. Specifically, there are two main problems as far as Windows is concerned: (1) lack of Unix signals, and (2) non-interchangeability of file and socket descriptors. Since I'm aiming for a native port, an emulation layer such as Cygwin is absolutely not an option. I'm faced with a bit of a dilemma here. The two options I see are to either redesign DPI, or ditch it altogether; and I don't think anyone is too keen on either idea. I've considered a fork, but I'm opposed to the idea on both practical and philosophical grounds (my goal's to help, not to hurt upstream). Any suggestions? Thanks & cheers, ~Benjamin

Penny Arcade is illegible in Dillo[1]. The problem is that its CSS sets the text attribute on the html element and Dillo ignores this, so we get black text on blue instead of white text on blue. Here is a demo: <html> <head> <style type="text/css">html{text:#F00;}</style> </head> <body> Blah, blah, blah </body> </html> The text is plain black, but if you change html to body in the CSS then the text is red as it should be. Refreshing pages with incomplete images

Currently refreshing a page only redownloads the text portion (I believe) and not the images, which is perfect IF the images have been fully downloaded/cached. On my slow connection, image-downloads frequently timeout, and refreshing doesn't retry to get them :'(.

I'm sure that our usual HTTP warning: unhandled MIME type: "text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" sort of msg is confusing to users in a "What? Dillo doesn't understand that character set?" sort of way when an img src attr is supposed to be modified by javascript or something.

There is unfortunately a severe problem with the CSS patch that was posted recently (the one that fixed the handling of CSS properties on the HTML element). It makes Dillo segfault when you drag the cursor across the text in a table cell. Test HTML and a gdb backtrace are attached. You can see that dw::fltk::FltkViewBase::drawRectangle() is called with a NULL color. I haven't determined exactly which circumstances trigger the problem - text in <p>s and <li>s appears to be OK, but text in a <td> reliably segfaults. Any suggestions as to other elements that I could test? (NB: I compile Dillo with -O0, your backtrace may look a bit different if you use a different optimisation level. This is almost a trivial cleanup, but I'd be more comfortable if someone else checked I have not missed anything. (I have been using it locally for a week or two with no problems so far.) Html_process_word() requires its argument to be null-terminated. This forces Html_write_raw() (the only caller of Html_process_word()) to write a null character before calling Html_process_word() and restore the original character afterwards. It turns out to be easy to change Html_process_word() to not need the null-terminator. This eliminates the hack in Html_write_raw() and lets us make several function arguments "const char *" instead of "char *". It's a little tricky to see that the patch is correct. It works because none of the functions that Html_process_word() calls require a null-terminator, and the return value of a_Html_parse_entities() *is* null-terminated. Have I missed anything? Hi, I'm creating a new distro that is supposed to be fast and light. I thought about Firefox but it all stacks up after you install gtk as well. So your slogan "fast and light" seemed sound the ticket. I compiled it on my ubuntu 10.04 system and it works on there. If anyone's interested, I've been working on a new patch to add native Win32 support to Dillo 2.x. It needs attention for a more experienced porter and is not yet ready for prime time, but it produces a running dillo.exe and should provide a reasonable base for further efforts. Another patch, this time not Win32-related. This works around the annoying "lazy loading" technique, which sets src to a placeholder image then uses JavaScript to fetch the real images after the pages load. Here's the diff: http://pastebin.com/wyP32Ukj (sorry it's not hg diff; I don't have access from school) I know Dillo aims to strictly follow standards, but I don't think it's a standards violation per se, so much as a trick too clever for its own good. I personally feel this helps the democratization of information access more than it hurts standards compliance, since otherwise the information might not be available until/unless Dillo implements JavaScript support. Hi, although caching mostly is good, there is serveral occasions when it's not wanted, specially with todays web2.0-concepts (user generated pages, etc.). Is there a way to disable caching in dillo? Maybe only for some sites? I've searched the archives and found a patch doing this, it was however dated back in 2003. So I'm intrested in som up-to-date information. Regards iveqy

They remove two unused structs and make variable names consistent between function typedefs and function definitions. Prompted by some private conversation with corvid I've been digging through specs and source code to see what the state of play is. The HTML5 specification[1] states that the user agent should consume text, converting character references until it finds the matching close quote. If there is no matching close quote (ie. it sees an EOF first) then it terminates (strictly speaking, it switches to the data state and reconsumes the EOF, which makes it emit an EOF token). Taking out Dillo's bogus attribute value detection as I proposed would make Dillo parse quoted attribute values as per the HTML5 spec. The Hubbub HTML parser library[2] parses quoted attribute values as per the HTML5 spec. Firefox parses quoted attribute values as per the HTML5 spec *except* that if it sees an EOF then it backs up to the open quote, discards it, then reparses as though it was expecting an unquoted attribute value. Otherwise (ie. if it finds the matching close quote) it makes no attempt to detect a broken attribute value, no matter what content the attribute value has swallowed up. So it seems that the world at large has given up on trying to detect and correct broken attribute values. If you point dillo at http://www.reddit.com/ you will see many javascript fragments. These come from div elements with an onclick="$(this).vote('<$>votehash</$>', null, event)" attribute. Dillo thinks that the '>' looks suspiciously like an end tag character. It looks ahead, sees the '<' character and decides that its suspicions are correct, so it terminates the tag at the '>', warns of a missing attribute close quote and renders the rest as HTML. This algorithm may have been effective in the early days of the web but I think it clearly does not work well today. I can't think of a better way of doing the job so I suggest removing it and instead just finding the matching close quote in all cases. Patch attached. After applying this patch dillo reports 0 HTML errors from http://www.reddit.com/! Regards, Jeremy Henty

Currently src/Makefile.am adds -I.. to some compile flags so that all the #include statements work. This breaks when the build directory is different from the source directory. The right thing to do is add -I$(srcdir)/.. . Patch attached (with an extra tidy-up patch as a bonus). Tested both when building in the source directory and outside it. Regards, Jeremy Henty

I just finished building dillo 2.2 on my fresh OpenSuse 11.3 install.? I got the source for FLTK-2.0.x-r7690 (I had also managed to find an older version r6916, but it seemed to make no difference, other than that the latest version compiled with less warnings) and it compiled and installed fine.? I followed the directions found here: http://www.dillo.org/source.html Now before my system upgrade, my wife had been using dillo on a certain site successfully.? She had a cookiesrc in her .dillo folder, which had an entry for the site.? There is a captcha system on the site that seemed to work well until today.? I started dillo from the console to see if I could learn anything, but I was not able to make much of it other than I might need to add a couple of more sites to cookiesrc.? dillo mysteriously freezes

I seem to be experiencing a very nasty bug that breaks my Dillo. A few seconds after starting dillo, it "freezes" -- standard-output stops, the graphics freeze and never get redrawn (resulting in those psychodelic effects of moving windows over a non-redrawing window). My dillo window then doesn't respond to my window manager's "close" events, and I have to manually kill it. I can't give you the exact steps to reproduce it -- sometimes it's like this immediately after starting ... sometimes it magically starts to happen a few seconds afterwards -- possibly after I click on a link. dillo-2.2 fltk-2_pre7513 (I also tried with earlier versions (6970)) Ideas?
