Registration is open for Software Freedom Day 2008!
by Pia Waugh June 27, 2008

June 27, 2008

Hi everyone, SFD2008 is around the corner - Saturday 20 September - and team registrations are now open! The first 300 teams registered before the 15th July will receive a SFD team pack including SFD 2008 tshirts, button pins, stickers and balloons, as well some useful resource CDs including some OpenEducation Discs (http://www.theopendisc.com/education/) a resource DVD with artwork, documentation, presentation templates and video material, and the option for some Ubuntu CDs. Additional T-shirts will also be available to purchase via our online store, which will be open soon. You can register by visiting our registration page but don't forget that you need to make your team page (or update your old page) *before* registering. There is more information about how to form a team and how to register on the teams page on our wiki: http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/register.html http://softwarefreedomday.org/teams Check out who has already registered on our new interactive world map! http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/map.shtml We wanted to change how people find teams so it was directly through the map rather than by continent and then country due to your excellent feedback last year, so teams can simply be softwarefreedomday.org/team rather than a really long url. If you already have a team page you can create a new page and shift all your data to the new page, or you can just link to your old events from your new page. We will also be ensuring team packages are sent much earlier this year so you get them on time. We had about 20 packages returned to us last year from teams who put the incorrect address or didn't pick up their packages so please ensure your address is 100% correct as we can't check it! Good luck with your SFD 2008 preparations, and don't forget to pass the message around and get more teams involved! We had over 330 teams last year and are anticipating over 500 this year! Thank you all for helping take software freedom to the streets and make a better world for everyone! After all, freedom isn't just for us geeks :) Cheers and happy planning! Open Education Disc for SFD
by Peter Ruwoldt June 26, 2008

June 26, 2008

Hi I have uploaded an iso of the Open Education Disc without VLC for distribution as part of SFD. I have also created an md5 verifier for the iso. Links as follows http://www.watiwara.org/OpenEdDiscSFD08.md5 http://www.watiwara.org/OpenEdDiscSFD08.iso I would be grateful if someone with some bandwidth were able to download this and check it out so that more than my eyes have looked at it. Does the image work? I've never done the md5 thing before - does it work? Is the CD label OK? Thanks in anticipation Peter -- Free and Open education for all Peter Ruwoldt Grant High School Hosking Avenue MOUNT GAMBIER SA 5290 P. 08 87263128 F. 08 87250173 ruwoldtp(a)granths.sa.edu.au http://ruwoldtp.googlepages.com/

Registration system - success and a few complications
by Pia Waugh June 3, 2008

June 3, 2008

Hi all, below is a message from Robert Schumann who has put a lot of work and hours into making our awesome new registration system! With the exception of a few little issues on particular browsers, which he is working through now, it has worked a treat and we already have almost 100 teams registered! Check out the map! http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/map.shtml ----- Forwarded message from Robert Schumann <robert(a)softwarefreedomday.org> ----- Hi all, Apologies to those who have been having trouble requesting supplies when registering: on some browsers, there is a bug which prevents the shipping address window from opening. That's what comes from trying to make the registration script too complicated! We are working on a solution to this technical glitch, however until then there is a very easy workaround that you can use: -------------------------- When you get to the part of the form that says "Would your team like to receive supplies?", change the drop-down box to "Yes" and then click on the refresh/reload button on your browser. -------------------------- Thanks for your patience. If you have previously registered and were unable to request supplies, and you would like to, please feel free to register again now, and use the workaround described above to ensure that your supplies request is received. We will remove your earlier, duplicate registration. Robert. ----- End forwarded message ----- Cheers, Pia -- OLPC Australia http://olpc.org.au/ Linux Australia http://linux.org.au/ Open Source Industry Australia http://osia.net.au/ Software Freedom Day http://softwarefreedomday.org/ "Watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third eye." - Bill Hicks

Quick question....
by Arron M Finnon June 1, 2008

June 1, 2008

Hi Guys, Just a quick enquiry about software we would like to give out at Software Freedom Day. One of our members has offered to burn a number of Linux Mint CD's and DVD'd to give out at the event, coupled with a howto guide to show how to install it. One of our other members thinks we can't do that because Linux Mint comes with Proprietary media codecs. My thoughts on it is that it's a day about celebrating software freedom, and that taking a hard line on stuff that doesn't conform to FSF guide lines on free software isn't really the event for it, my views is that workshops and discussion groups on why using free-codecs is better than using proprietary-codecs i think is a great idea. Sort of advertising alternatives, rather than saying YOU CAN'T USE THAT I have the nasty thought that we have all of these potential new users, who the minute they go to play their music or videos sit there and say "well free software is good but you can't play stuff i'll just boot back in to windows" You guys have any ideas or am i just making more out of it than i should -- Arron M Finnon President The UAD Linux Society www.thelinuxsociety.org.uk

Software Freedom Day website statistics
by Pia Waugh May 30, 2008

May 30, 2008

Hi all, I hadn't done this to date, but I was looking at the visitors we had to sfd.org last year and wow, I was really pleased :) >From Sept 30 2006 to Sept 30 2007 we had 67,307 visitors. Just to put this in context, we only had web traffic counted from May till September 2007 with 40,000 of those visitors in the month of September 2007 and an average of 183 visits a day in spite of only monitoring for 5 months.. >From Sept 30th last year till now we have already had 47,174 unique visitors and an average 192 visits a day, so we can expect a much higher turnaround of unique visitors this year! So make sure you register your teams as soon as it is announced (any day now!) and ensure you update your team pages. Mint is just one disc someone offered to burn, we've held a couple of events before and the LiveCD's are always popular. The open disc is something we have also planned to give out as well, i personally think it's a great project, and sometimes it's easy to think as a Linux guy the free and open source software is Linux, and forget that there is a lot for a windows friends too > In addition to Linux Live CDs, an obvious handout is the opendisc and > the openeducation disc > http://theopendisc.com/ > http://www.theopendisc.com/education/ > These are programs for Windows, which are good for > 1) informing about Open Source Free software > 2) being easy for most passers by to accept! -- Arron M Finnon President The UAD Linux Society www.thelinuxsociety.org.uk
