Two items that stand out in my mind are: 1. I expected visitors to pick up literature and a CD, take a quick look at the demos and then leave. Surprisingly almost everyone stayed until the announced quitting time, asking questions and wanting to know more about Open Source Software. 2. There was not much interest in starting a Linux User Group but there was considerable interest in starting an Open Source Software discussion group to meet regularly to discuss Open Source. The event was held in Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and was attended by 60 people. The event showcased the projects of LinuxChix, Asterisk and FreeCulture.org LinuxChix (Peruvian Chapter) LinuxChix is a community for women who like Linux, and for women and men who want to support women in computing. http://www.linuxchixperu.org/ Asterisk (Peruvian Users Group) Asterisk is a complete PBX in software. It runs on Linux, BSD and MacOSX and provides all of the features you would expect from a PBX and more. Report on Software Freedom Showcase held at Mawson Lakes, Adelaide, Australia Paul Schulz (paul(a)mawsonlakes.org) ---------------------------------- The event was held in the Mawson Centre, adjacent to the Mawson Lakes Campus of the University of South Australia and also contains the local public library. A display of Free and Open Source Software books had been set up, and our large (inflatable) Emperor penguin, Bill did an excellent job promoting out event. (Pictures of the event will be available soon.) The event showcased the activites of two distinct groups, Bettong.Org and Air-Stream. The event was organised by members of LinuxSA, with assistance from the Mawson Centre itself. Bettong.Org (bettong.org) Amoung other things, Bettong.Org provides Free and Open Source training. They provided PC's running Ubuntu, and had the all important job of explaining and demonstrating what Linux and Free and Open Source Software is all about. Air-Stream (air-stream.org) Air-Stream is building a community wireless network in Adelaide, South Australia. They provided the networking for the day, and illustrated why open accessible communication is also important for building communities. These groups were setup in separate rooms, with visitors able to wander between the two. In addition, several other individuals brought along computers and equipment, demonstrating how they use Free and Open Source software themselve. These included: - An installation PC - used to explain how installations worked; - A gaming PC with a demonstation of 3D gamin under Linux - An electronic music studio - Linux and applications running on an iPod We may have had possibly 50 visitor come through on the day, with many of them staying and trying out Ubuntu on one of the PC's setup. Lunchtime entertainment was provided by 'Swing Dancers SA' and the 'Chigaco Showband'. A BBQ was also put on by the Chicago Showband. Some statistics: Duration: 10am - 4pm With an hour each for setting up, and the packing it in. People: 20 organisers, helpers and participants 50 or so visitors, with the main groups being - parents/grandparents with children - overseas student from local university Other: CD's given away - 70 ish Sausages consumed - 100 Time swing dancers danced - 1 hour Music pieces played by the band - 12 The day wouldn't have happened without our sponsor The Mawson Centre and our supporters: - The Software Freedom Day organising team (you guys rock!) - Ubuntu - CD's, stickers - Bettong.Org - Air-Stream and all of our helpers. Hello, This is a report by proxy for the London SFD celebrations. I organised the event but was called abroad by work earlier this week so I was lucky to have some very capable friends in the Greater London LUG to take it over. The "advocacy walk" from Regents Park to Tottenham Court Road was attended by 20 people who distributed around 300 leaflets and I'm not sure how many Ubuntu CDs. The meeting in Westminster University was attended by 59 people and had speakers from Ubuntu, Red Hat and GLLUG. The meeting has apparently just finished and moved to the pub. You know.... If I had planned it properly I could have attended both the Milan and London celebrations... Would that have been a first? Attending celebrations in 2 countrys? Photos and blog reports to follow. "NZ takes global software project lead" Education innovation addresses IT skills shortage. Media release: Software Freedom Day 4, Team Christchurch. 17th September 2006. The fourth annual Software Freedom Day has arrived a year early, for one IT educator team. The global celebration of computing independence is growing steadily, with 180 teams from over 70 countries taking part in 2006. Australia has claimed the title for the most teams in one country, at 15, after a big contribution to the year-old Software Freedom International organisation. New Zealand had seven teams registered, but the Christchurch team, uniquely, is extending SFD 3 into its second day. The significance of the milestone was explained by the SFD Christchurch team leader, Rik Tindall. “Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) is the main component on which the Internet runs. As such it is hidden, along with its importance, from general public view. But a far deeper technical insight has great priority for every modern society - perhaps the greatest. For example, both Labour and National's websites are run on FOSS, and Green Party policy is very much tending to promote it. Nandor Tanczos reportedly joined the Auckland SFD event. It is now a matter of joining the dots for the rest of the country,” Tindall says. “The facilitation skill-set FOSS delivers is unique.” “We live in an addicted society, overburdened by health and policing costs as a result. The place to start breaking addiction is our own computer screens. FOSS multiplies information choice. The core difference from deploying FOSS is changing the concept of computers from consumer appliance to communications tool. By empowering the user, visual capture by commercial product is broken. Healing of mind, body, and spirit can thereafter begin. This isn't an abstract cause, because if politicians, educators, journalists, and the rest of society's leaders were wishing to retain what respect they have from the young generation, they would be acting upon this today. Christchurch SFD team has invited the general public and news media to participate in a live demonstration of computing liberation, at its fourth Software Freedom Day,” reports Tindall. FOSS will be used and explained for a further SFDay, at the South Learning Centre, South Christchurch Library, 66 Colombo Street, Beckenham, from 12pm to 4pm, Sunday 17 September 2006. Training centres on the Ubuntu GNU/Linux operating system distribution, and software running consistent with that. A secure, virus-free work environment is created, increasing productivity. From this stable platform is offered an alternate course, for how computer users' number one bane will be solved – that of spam junkmail. “At the moment we are locked into a treadmill by which our productive output is being eroded daily, through unsolicited advertising broadcasts to our Inboxes,” Tindall advises. “Computer monoculture is to blame. Expect in the near future to see proprietary software offering a filtering solution at the operating system level, that monitors every email communication and adds a small charge for each legitimate item to the user. Free and Open-Source Software is the better direction because it substitutes the spam platform itself, in infinite meaningful ways,” Tindall concludes. “The way forward is to show how each individual can grow with computing, once their minds – and their desktops - are set free from commercial servitude. The nature of work has been changed forever by the ICT revolution. We had a steady stream of people coming through the Nashua Public Library, and we distributed ~40 Ubuntu CDs, along with informational flyers. [Planning-en] Report from Dubbo

Howdy all, Well I must say we had an excellent Software Freedom Day. Our day was spent at one of our local shoppings malls with a display that I had been organising during the week. It basically consisted of 4 computers setup with Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Damn Small Linux, a projector hooked up to the Ubuntu machine running the Blender Siggraph Demoreels and the occasional other video we had. There was also a noticeboard that had various information leaflets for people to read. We had a little bit of press help promoting the event earlier in the week. One of our local free newspapers, the Dubbo Photo News, published a small article on Thursday. Our local prominent AM radio station, 2DU, did and interview with myself earlier in the week which had some good results as a number of people mentioned hearing it. The Dubbo Photo News photographer visited us on Saturday to take a heap of photos and get some information and they will be running it as a major article in next weeks paper. The day started with about 200 Ubuntu CDs, and I also had a heap of blank CDs which I was using to burn copies of the Open Source Free CD for people. I think we gave away around half the Ubuntu CDs and about 20 odd OSFCDs. There was lots of passing interest in our display and there were a large number of computer professionals that were very interested, a few system admins, an IT teacher/admin from a local high school, and others. Over the entire day there was not one negative comment regarding open source or Linux, everyone was most positive and there were certainly lots of average people quite interested as well. Our club (Dubbo and District Computer Club) got a good lot of promotion and we are expecting to get a few new faces at our next meeting which we have lined up as a workshop to do a bit of a Linux installfest and to teach the basics of the Linux CLI. I shall be putting together a page of photos at some stage tonight. I hope everyone else had a day as successful as ours was. Cheers, Andrew Swinn Dubbo Team
