"Celebrate software freedom", SFD team invites computer users. Local technologists hold Free Software education day. Press Release: Software Freedom Day, Team Christchurch. 11th September 2006. The third annual Software Freedom Day is this weekend. The international festival of Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) is celebrated around the world. "FOSS and SFD are especially popular in developing countries, where software license costs form a barrier to learning", says SFD Christchurch team leader, Rik Tindall. "Software Freedom Day is about diversity and skill range in computer education." "Few people realise that quality PC software is freely available, without breaching copyright licences. To remedy this, Software Freedom Day publicises Free and Open-Source Software", Tindall says. "Better known examples are Firefox web browser, OpenOffice.org office suite, and GNU/Linux operating system distributions like Ubuntu. All these will be demonstrated at our local event, this weekend." SFD Christchurch is spread over two afternoons, 16 and 17 September, Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm. Its venue is the well-resourced South Learning Centre, South Christchurch Library, 66 Colombo Street, Beckenham. A workshop will be run continuously, advising on internet security and FOSS installation technique. DVDs will be screened, and Ubuntu FOSS CDs given out. "Benefits of running legal free software include greater system security, more regular updates, and a supportive community that speeds both learning and software development", says Tindall. "Free and Open-Source systems are the way of the future, due to distributed development's efficiency and enthusiastic support. Most importantly, it's just great fun to get 'under the bonnet' of your PC software, and make a lot of new friends while doing so", Tindall says. "A cordial invite is extended to parents and teachers, large and small business operators - home and office - and technicians, to sample the clean and productive working environment, and the tidy educational tools, that FOSS makes available, this Software Freedom Day." [Planning-en] Update on SFD On The Air Idea

Okay I know I've been a bit slack in finalising details about this so here we go. As I have been asked to help out with the Sydney event, the Live On The Air Component won't be starting until about 9:30pm Australian Eastern Standard Time. However what I am thinking off is running a music loop interspersed with audio messages from various teams around the world. These would be 1-2 minutes long and would consist of someone from each team introducing themselves and giving a brief rundown of what they are going to be doing. The messages can be in either english or your local language. Once we get to 9:30pm we will then be going live. I will be updating throughout the night with live interviews with teams around the world. A special request to NZers, given the time difference you guys are going to be finished before we go live (unless you're running a SFD rave party :)). Would it be possible for you to prerecord an event report and shoot me a link on the day? Right thats the basics of it. If you have received the following through the team-contacts list already I apologise, but I haven't seen it come through so I thought I would try this list. Hi all, Firstly a brief introduction. My name is James Purser and I run a community news site ( http://www.localfoss.org ) which focuses on promoting FOSS communities around the world. I also, along with my wife Karin, produce a weekly online radio programme called Open Source On The Air ( http://www.localfoss.org/Open_Source_On_The_Air ). We are planning a SFD event with a difference. What we would like to do is run a live broadcast that will attempt to talk to SFD teams from around the world. This would be a combination of live interviews and pre-recorded interviews. The aim is to have this show streaming live for those SFD teams who have net access at their events to show that its a global event, as well as help the different regions listen in to what everyone else is up to. I am looking for groups in each region who would be interested in taking part. If you're interested then please let me know, either off list or on, it doesn't matter.
