I'm glad Marcos Marado is highlighting some of the issues with Free,
Libre browsers. This is a great topic. Small distribution developers
and many who like to build their own software from source have been
uneasy about how difficult it is to build a web browser and how few
choices there are for web browsers that can render modern web pages.
I've been looking for lower dependency alternatives to the more
popular browsers for several years. Seems like the situation just
continues to get worse. Also, I feel the transfer of standardization
from the W3C to the main web browser developers themselves was not a
step in a positive direction for simplifying web protocols or making
web browser development more accessible. If anything, they've made it
harder for new and independent web browser projects to come up with
anything that can compete with the major players.
I put together some notes on web browser alternatives. If anyone's
interested, I can share the link. I do have a list of web browsers
that aren't based on the main web browser libraries. If anyone has
suggestions to add to the list, feel free to let me know.
