Website issues fixed
by Jurgen Gaeremyn Sept. 9, 2026

Sept. 9, 2026

Hey all, 2 days ago, someone mentioned that the registration form on the website wasn't working all that well. We looked into it, and I'm glad to say the site is up again. So if you're organising Software Freedom Day this year, do'nt hesitate to register your event. If you tried in the past and got stuck on the registration form not sending you any mails, or you couldn't create the event once logged in... these are all fixed now. The main cause was a combination of DNS and mail server setup, causing mails not going out. Looking forward to see all your events appear on our map soon! Just visit https://digitalfreedoms.org and do your thing :) Jurgen

Software Freedom Day 2026
by LM Sept. 5, 2026

Sept. 5, 2026

Software Freedom Day 2026 is only two weeks away. If you're holding a virtual event or a hybrid event or are recording parts of your event, please let me know. I want to get the word out for people who can't participate locally this year that there are still ways for them to join in on celebrating. If you're looking for an event in your area, please see the official list at: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/archive?view=list If you're hosting an event or know of someone who is and the event isn't yet listed at the DFF site, please let us know. We'd love to see more events added. While I'm waiting to get my access to the DFF blog reinstated, I'll be posting #SFD2026 highlights here: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/34921.html I will probably keep it at that URL until after the official SFD celebration because it's easier to update. I'll move the post to the official DFF blog after. If there's anything you wanted added to this year's highlights post, please let me know. Do you have videos, pictures, event schedules or information you'd like to share? Send me the links. Feel free to contact me by email or the #SoftwareFreedomDay channel on matrix up to and throughout Software Freedom Day if you want to share any news, information, videos or URL links about your events. If you need any help getting the word out about your particular celebration before the 19th, feel free to send me information or links to share on the DFF social media accounts. I'd also be happy to post when events start and how to join in on the 19th if anyone wants that shared on the DFF social media. Hope you all have an enjoyable and rewarding Software Freedom Day 2026.

Hey everyone, Our next DFF monthly meeting is coming up Tuesday, September 1st at 16:30 CET / 10:30am ET. With us being a worldwide crew, double-check that against your local time. Quick catch-up from last time, in case you missed it: - SFD 2026 registrations are at 28 events and counting. That's 33% up from this time last year, with some encouraging spread into new regions. - We're running a banner giveaway to get people sharing SFD photos/posts. There are 3 banners up for grabs for the best entries. Got something you want on the agenda? Just reply to this email or drop it in the Matrix channel; either works! We'll fold submissions into the agenda ahead of the meeting. (meeting room link below) https://matrix.to/#/#digitalfreedoms:matrix.org See you on the 1st! Sincerely, Digital Freedom Foundation

So you wanted to order your awesome #SFD2026 banner but you're too late? Good news. We still have a few left and you can win one. Please share your blog posts, articles, videos or social media posts about Software Freedom Day and tag us so we can see them or email a link to them to this mailing list. We're giving away 3 banners to the best entries. Submissions must include a picture or video of your SFD activities. I'm not going to send a picture of the banner over email but you can see a photo of this years' banner on the DFF social media feeds such as Mastodon or Bluesky.

FOSS design, philosophy, ecosystems
by LM July 26, 2026

July 26, 2026

Can you believe Software Freedom Day is only two months away? Last year, we counted down to SFD by sharing interesting links to FOSS. This year, let's add something new. Let's share links to blog posts and articles on FOSS design and ideas that shape our ecosystems. If you've written something you'd like included, please feel free to post about it. Here are some links I've run across recently. The first two are from the permacomputing mailing list and the third is from someone on Mastodon. This blog post discusses fighting the effects of AI, distilling useful knowledge, tools and processes. It includes links to FOSS projects including a vim-like editor. https:// civboot.github.io/blog/2026-07-21-fighting-ai.html This blog post discusses design of Freewheeling Apps and includes links to some FOSS projects in lua: https://akkartik.name/freewheeling/ An article on Open payment systems: https://netizenry1337.substack.com/p/liberating-our-payment-systems I'll be posting more on Mastodon, Bluesky and X in the coming weeks. If you find any of these articles interesting, I can post them here as well. Maybe they'll give you some ideas for topics for talks at your own SFD event.
