💪 Software Freedom Day is growing, and so should our team!
by Jurgen Gaeremyn March 7, 2026

March 7, 2026

Hi Friends of Digital Freedoms, Software Freedom Day has grown significantly over the past few years: from 23 registered events in 2023 to over 100 locations last year. We've been building relationships with bloggers and sponsors across the FOSS ecosystem, and we're excited to be sending even more swag this year. From the beginning, we've agreed that active board members don't need to commit indefinitely. With that in mind, we're now looking for fresh volunteers to help us take Software Freedom Day even further in the coming years. We're looking for new board members willing to commit for at least one year, and also volunteers for specific tasks. *Want to join the board? Core responsibilities include:* * Taking collective decisions on how to shape Software Freedom Day and the other DFF events in the upcoming years * Attending our monthly online board meeting (typically around one hour, occasionally up to 90 minutes) * Being present in the DFF Matrix channel throughout the year * Helping prepare meeting agendas and taking notes * Managing our budget, handling sponsor invoicing, and ensuring financial transparency * Helping determine and establish the long-term legal structure and home of the foundation * Setting the annual SFD date, coordinating swag logistics, and keeping the event registration platform running for local organizers * Upholding and enforcing our code of conduct The board is not something for you? But you still *want to help?* We'd love additional help with any of the following. If you have something else to offer, don't hesitate to share your ideas! * Finding and approaching global sponsors * Reaching out to local teams and encouraging early registration * Writing blog posts on the website * Participating in social media * Maintaining our online infrastructure (Nextcloud, mail, Joomla site, VPS) * Helping with press outreach and partner organization relationships We work in English as our common language, though most of us are not native speakers. So no need to worry about that. If you're interested or know someone who might be, please get in touch. We'd love to hear from you! Mail us at board(a)digitalfreedomfoundation.org before April 4th. Warm regards, Laura, Chris, Joe, Ruwan, Jurgen

Document Freedom Day - Free Document Format countdown - EPUB
by LM March 7, 2026

March 7, 2026

Welcome to today's #DFD2026 countdown. The Free format for this week is EPUB, the Open Standard for ebooks. It's very easy to create your own ebooks. All it takes is a text editor to produce HTML and XML files and a zip tool to store them. If you don't want to learn HTML and XML coding, you can use Free Software like Scribus to design and generate EPUB formats for you. Calibre can organize your ebook library. Bard incorporates FLite Text-To-Speech to read ebooks aloud to you.

Happy New Years
by LM Jan. 1, 2026

Jan. 1, 2026

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year. May it be safe, healthy and prosperous. Happy Public Domain Day. We're gearing up for Document Freedom Day in March. Is anyone in the process of brainstorming ideas for a local or virtual event for Document Freedom Day? There is a discussion of some possible Document Freedom Day themes in the #DocumentFreedomDay channel on Matrix. Some hot topics that might be of interest include digital ids and formats useful for indie web development. I enjoyed our previous countdown to Document Freedom Day where we shared FLOSS programs that use Open/Free formats and discussed topics like emacs org mode and text todo files. Public domain and Creative Commons resources using Free document formats are a powerful combination. Let's get the word out to the world and help promote these and similar important resources on Document Freedom Day. Hope you enjoy Public Domain Day. Please share your favorite public domain and Document Freedom Day software or resources. Check out sites like Open Culture and Internet Archive to find some great multimedia. I also have a list of public domain source code projects: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/10325.html Best wishes.

Document Freedom Day 2026 - 25th of March
by Marcos Marado Nov. 25, 2025

Nov. 25, 2025

Hi friends! Document Freedom Day 2026 is going to be celebrated on the **25th of March**, in four months' time. The date was celebrated 18 years ago for the first time, but the issues it highlights are as relevant today as ever, if not more. Open Standards, Interoperability, avoiding vendor lock-in, or as it is nowadays called, "having digital sovereignty", these are daily topics more relevant to everyone, as more and more of our lives are digital lives. Do you have any plans or ideas on how are you going to celebrate the day? Do you plan to organize an event, or join an existing one? Feel free to brainstorm and share your ideas here on the mailing list, I'm looking forward to reading about what you have in mind! Best regards, -- Marcos Marado Digital Freedom Foundation

Mascot Design Submission
by Mohamad Itaqi Nov. 10, 2025

Nov. 10, 2025

Dear Digital Freedom Foundation Team, My name is Mohamad Kamel Hafez Khaiata, from Aleppo, Syria. I’ve heard about the Huion Draw Challenge from TechnoLab Youth Team during the participation for Software Freedom Day 2025 in Aleppo, and here is my submission to the contest, with the artwork created in Procreate. I realize that it’s required to be created in a FOSS software, but I unfortunately don’t have any access to a PC to draw it on due to difficult circumstances. I sincerely apologize for the late submission as I had a power outage that held me back from submitting, I hope you consider my artwork in the judging process :) Below I attached the PNG version of the artwork, I can provide the 82 MB Procreate source file if needed too. No AI tools were used in the creation of it. Koa is a time-travellering honeybadger who travelled from the future to the early 2000s to promote the values of free and open source software: sharing knowledge and embracing innovation. He is brave, adventurous, and very passionate about his mission. Koa carries a disc and a flash drive on his waist as keychains, they act as quick access to FOSS software and grant him the ability to spread awareness regarding it more easily. He has logos of multiple iconic FOSS software splattered throughout his design—Godot on his left (robotic) arm acting as a gear to move it, Openshot as his belt, Inkspace symbol on his right shoulder, and Evince on his right leg. He carries the iconic open source symbol (the flipped “C”) on his back, and his mantle is shaped like a “C” shape. Thank you and I hope you consider it!
