Sept. 17, 2025

Three days and counting until Software Freedom Day 2025. Thought I'd post something useful for SFD. Here are some links to lists of Free, Libre, Open Source remote communications software: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/14124.html https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/better-than-zoom-try-these-free-softwar… https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Remote_Communication What's your favorite FLOSS alternative to proprietary communications software? Thanks to all the people who have shared their favorite Free Software on this list and social media platforms. Have a great SFD2025.

4 days and counting
by LM Sept. 17, 2025

Sept. 17, 2025

I can't believe we're only 4 days away from Software Freedom Day 2025. FLOSS question for today, what's your favorite Free, Libre, Open Source music player? I like the lightweight combo of FLTK based flrec that works with sox. Sox, the swiss army knife of sound processing utilities is a very useful program. I'm also a fan of qmmp. Feel free to get some chatter going on about Software Freedom Day on any of the social media platforms you're on. Please use #SFD2025 in your posts so others can find and boost or like them. If you want anything posted or shared about your event on the Digital Freedom Foundation social media accounts, please let me know.

Sept. 14, 2025

We have 6 days until #SoftwareFreedomDay2025. To celebrate, let's all share some of our favorite FLOSS programs. What's your favorite FOSS graphics program? Personally, I can't pick just one. Gimp, Inkscape, Graphicsmagick and Imagemagick are great. As are DarkTable, RawTherapee, MTPaint and TuxPaint. However, some lesser known FLOSS graphics programs I like are GrafX2, LodePaint and I.mage. What FLOSS graphics programs do you use?

Spreading the word for #SFD2025
by LM Sept. 14, 2025

Sept. 14, 2025

Just a quick reminder to please use hashtags #SFD2025 or #SoftwareFreedomDay2025 when sharing your Software Freedom Day posts on social media. That way, the DFF will be able to find and boost them. Also, if you have any information you want to get out, feel free to email me or contact me on the #SoftwareFreedomDay channel on Matrix. The DFF can share or like your posts on social media or share information on your events and activities on our social media accounts. I've added a blog page for all things #SFD2025: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/blog/software-freedom-day-2025-whats-goi… Feel free to share links to your blog posts, pictures, videos or other multimedia related to Software Freedom Day and I'll add them to the page. If there are any virtual events going on that day that I find out about, I'll add them there. I'll try to update the page throughout the day on Saturday the 20th, so there will be one central place to share timely information about Software Freedom Day. Can't believe we're only 6 days away. Hope you all have a successful and fun Software Freedom Day. Thanks for being a part of things this year.

science fiction themed Free Software
by LM Sept. 8, 2025

Sept. 8, 2025

I was reading about September 8th being Star Trek day. I've been collecting links to science fiction related FOSS for a while now. Thought it would be fun to share some of them. I ended up listing them here: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/31725.html That way I can just point to one location and share the links and add/update as necessary. Hope all the science fiction fans out there enjoy them.

If you do get something up and streaming, please share the link and I'll try to get the word out about it through the DFF site and social media posts. If you take any pictures or videos of your event, I hope you'll share them as well. Have a wonderful event!

Counting down to SFD 2025
by LM Sept. 1, 2025

Sept. 1, 2025

Welcome to September. 20 days until #SFD2025. There's still time to register your team if you haven't yet or plan to host a virtual event. If you have SFD2025 graphics, videos, multimedia, etc. to share, please post the links. Check the DFF site for all the latest info on SFD2025. Similar to last year, I'll be posting information about ongoing activities and the latest news about SFD on the Digital Freedom Foundation blog on this page and will be updating the page live on Software Freedom Day: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/blog/software-freedom-day-2025-whats-goi… Feel free to share anything you want announced or added to the page. Is anyone doing any virtual events this year? I loved the capture the flag event last year and was wondering if anyone had plans to do it again this year.

Sorry about the links and non-text parts in the previous post. That's what I get for copying a post's wording from another post I made instead of going back to the original text. Ignore the links in the previous email. If you want to check out the event map and what's going on where, please see: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/archive?view=list Also, please feel free to share some of your ideas for planning Software Freedom Day 2025. Hope it's even better than last year.

3 weeks and counting

We are 3 weeks away from #SoftwareFreedomDay2025 <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/softwarefreedomday2025?__eep__=6&__cft__[0…>. There's room on the map for more events: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/archive?view=list <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdigitalfreedoms.org%2Fen%2Fsfd…> They don't have to be large. They can be small. They can in person. They can be virtual. They can be hybrid. They don't have to be on Sept 20th. They can occur on a date that's convenient for you and the attendees. If you don't currently have an event in your area, please consider creating one. You might meet some new friends who also enjoy Free Software. If you are hosting an event in your area, please feel free to post some details about it on our mailing list. It might inspire others to create their own event or give other teams some ideas. Also, let me know if you've posted anything about it on social media. The DFF can boost your posts. The DFF can also share posts about your events on our social media accounts. You can share information about your events or event planning on the DFF blog as well. Is anyone hosting anything virtual this year? If so, we'd like to try to highlight it for people who may not have an event in their area but would still like to participate in some way. Hope you all have a wonderful Software Freedom Day 2025.
