Community outreach

Hey Software Freedom Friends, lots of things are happening - SFD 2023 is closing in quickly. Programs probably are getting their final shape. Whoever's considering recording or live streaming the events, is welcome to use the OBS scene collection <https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/VideoConferencing/OBS-studio>. Now is also a great moment to reach out to your local community, if you haven't already. We're thinking social media accounts, we're thinking mailing lists, we're thinking local policy makers. For each of these groups, you can find a suggestion on the wiki <https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CommunityOutreach>. Feel free to adapt to your local situation, or use some ideas as inspiration for a mail in your local language. Currently we already have one submission for the SFD Song challenge. Don't forget submit your entry too! The FSF is also awarding some prizes to winning teams! Software Freedom Day - virtual event options

We're at 16 days and counting until Software Freedom Day, the 20th edition. We're up to 24 teams! Unfortunately, there are a couple of continents we haven't covered this year and I do know of people in those areas who would love to attend an event. If there's a virtual part to your Software Freedom Day celebration or you're hosting any hybrid events, please let me know. I'd like to pass the information on to people who can't attend a local SFD event. I'd need time and time zone, how to join and language of choice (human not programming). Would appreciate your help in finding events for those not fortunate enough to have one in their area. Also, would appreciate hearing if you or anyone you know is in North America and might want to get together either to attend or volunteer or help organize an event in that time zone. If you're having trouble finding a local SFD event, please post to this list as well and let us know. SFD countdown

We're at 13 days and counting until Software Freedom Day, the 20th edition. Just a reminder to include the timezone when you advertise or let people know about your Software Freedom Day events. A few years ago, I forgot to add the timezone and had people tuning it at the appointed time but for their timezones. So, they came too early or missed things. Since we're worldwide, people anywhere in the world could see information about your event, but they may not remember to adjust for the time difference between their location and yours. I've seen mentions for events that look like they'll be really great including these: https://sfd.nosk.org.np/ http://tiny.cc/sfd23 https://kielux.de/p/KOLT23 Feel free to post about your own events on this mailing list. Software Freedom Day contests

Just to update list members on some of the actions going on, the new DFF board is working getting a few prizes for Software Freedom Day contests. The contests are open to anyone. Feel free to promote them at your local SFD event if you'd like. There's a SFD song contest with a prize from MuseScore. If you'd like to share information about a local event to the Digital Freedom Foundation's Mastodon account or other social media accounts, send us a post about it. online meeting July 6 14:00 UTC - Brainstorming about the future of Software Freedom Day

Hey all, Recently I shot out a poll for an online brainstorm session on the future of Software Freedom Day and the other events organized by the Digital Freedom Foundation. The poll showed a clear winner. The 7 persons who entered the poll, were all available (if needed) on next Thursday, July 6th at 14:00 UTC The meeting will take at most 90 minutes (capped). Chat will happen on Element (https://matrix.to/#/#SoftwareFreedomDay:matrix.org) and on there we will supply a Jitsi link for the participants. Thank you Ring for your inspiring testimonial from Bangladesh! Looking forward to be meeting you upcoming Thursday together with the other volunteers. As your life story also testifies... we are but humans and our commitments often depend on health and other circumstances. 20 years Software Freedom Day - and the future

Dear Friends of Digital Freedoms, (if nothing else, please read the last paragraph with a practical question) Over the last 20 years, many people have stepped up to make Software Freedom Day big. Under the leadership of Frederic Muller, Patrick Sinz, Pockey Lam and Julien Forgeat - the celebration of Software Freedom Day grew further to an international event with celebrations in every continent, gathering thousands of people. Read more about the history on https://www.digitalfreedomfoundation.org/index.php/about On May 27th 2019, Patrick died in a traffic accident. He contributed very much to the French speaking Open Source community, was a friend to many and was also a loving father and spouse. The other board members were struck hard by this blow. This loss, with consequently the COVID pandemic and personal health issues, have lead the board into being less and less active the last few years. Recently it was announced on the mailing list that the complete board of the Digital Freedom Foundation have resigned and are looking for people to take over the task. Despite multinational companies growing into bigger and bigger closed source eco systems, great projects like Linux, LibreOffice, NextCloud, Inkscape and Moodle succeed in setting an example in an economical viable way, while still setting new standards for Open Source Software. It is more important than ever to give voice to the many great projects out there that choose to be available to every person on the globe, giving them the freedom to use, study, modify and pass on this software. Putting Free and Libre software front and center, is a core challenge of the Digital Freedom Foundation. Over the years, we gradually grew bigger and next to Software Freedom Day (SFD, since 2004) also added the Document Freedom Day (DFD, since 2008), the Hardware Freedom Day (HFD, since 2013) and the Education Freedom Day (EFD, since 2013) to their calendar. With the 20^th edition of SFD up the horizon, we need to look who is willing to step up and put in a helping hand for the Digital Freedom Foundation (DFF), who is willing to put their shoulders under respectively SFD, DFD, HFD and EFD? Are you willing and able to help think about shaping the Digital Freedom Foundation and help organize their events?
