I got the impression some of the LibreOffice group would be doing something virtually. So maybe that's something anyone on the mailing list could look into joining if they're not participating locally. Also, was wondering if some of us wanted to do something virtually together. Would anyone want to get on Jitsi or Google Meet and talk about Open Formats and our favorite FLOSS programs that work well with them? > Thanks for starting the discussion! Thanks for participating. Have a favorite document format?
by LM Feb. 23, 2025

Feb. 23, 2025

What are some of your favorite Open Document formats? Do you use csv, ical, html and css, odt, xml, json, wav and flac regularly? What Free formats do you rely on? You can also use plain text files for a variety of functions from telling stories and taking notes to creating todo.txt or similar files or emacs org mode files. Have a favorite use for plain text files? Share it with us. Let's get a discussion going. We're counting down to celebrating Document Freedom Day on March 26, 2025. Please add to the conversation about Free and Open document formats on your favorite social media platforms. Tell us about your favorite formats. You can use the hashtag #DocumentFreedomDay2025 or #DFD2025.

Document Freedom Day: Empowering the Digital World with Open Standards
by Marcos Marado Feb. 22, 2025

Feb. 22, 2025

The Document Foundation wrote an interesting article called "Document Freedom Day: Empowering the Digital World with Open Standards", in preparation for DFD 2025. I'm not going to reproduce it here entirely, but allow me a TLDR: * DFD is important; * If you organize a DFD event and get in touch with them, they can provide stickers on LibreOffice and Open Document Format. But even if you don't plan on organizing a DFD event this year, the entire article is well worth reading (and sharing): https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2025/01/27/document-freedom-day-20… We already have one 2025 event on the map - where will the second be? https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/dfd/events -- Marcos Marado

Have you tried asking them? I'm not thrilled with Slack as a forum, but they do have a lot of discussion going on via Slack channels. They also have an online forum: https://forum.openfoodfacts.org/ Plus, they seem to have monthly virtual discussions. You could contact them directly by email or through any of these options. They may be able to give you more details about their app and their design choices. Personally, I think their database is much more impressive than the app. It's Open so anyone can use it for research, projects, etc.

Open Food Facts
by LM Feb. 3, 2025

Feb. 3, 2025

If anyone's planning a Document Freedom Day or Software Freedom Day event in Europe and especially if you're in France and you need some guest speakers, I believe the Open Foods Facts project ( https://world.openfoodfacts.org/ ) could be a great resource. They're working with an Open database and have Free software including an app. They're project is about transparency with food and cosmetic products throughout the world. If you're in an area where there are Open Food Facts volunteers, they can give a talk about their project at a DFD or SFD event. Some of the Open Foods Facts volunteers organize events as well, so a joint DFD or SFD event with an Open Food Facts event might be a possibility. If you're interested, you can connect with someone at the Open Food Facts project at support(a)openfoodfacts.org or let me know and I can make some introductions. I can't believe Document Freedom Day will be next month. It's coming up very soon. Have a great Document Freedom Day.

Want to register a local event for Document Freedom Day 2025? Here are some tips: If you don't already have an account on the digitalfreedoms.org site (not the same as the SFD site), register here: https://digitalfreedoms.org/log-in?view=registration Once registered and logged in, look at the Document Freedom Day menu near the top left of this page: https://digitalfreedoms.org/ The menu appears when you mouse over the first instance of the words Document Freedom Day. If you're holding your event at a new location, be sure to use the Add Location option. Click on Add Event in the menu to add the information to let people know about your event. More details on registering are available here: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/documentation/how-to-register If you have any questions, feel free to ask on this list. I'll be posting more about Document Freedom Day in the weeks counting down to the event. Hope you'll participate this year.

Counting down to Document Freedom Day
by LM Jan. 6, 2025

Jan. 6, 2025

Hope you had a great holiday season. Now that it's 2025, we're counting down to our next event, Document Freedom Day, on March 26th. To spark some interest for Document Freedom Day, I would like to put together some articles and posts about various topics related to the Free interchange of documents and other media formats. Please share your thoughts. What topics of interest regarding Free formats or Free content would you like to see discussed? On a related note, Public Domain Day was January 1st. archive.org is having a free virtual event to celebrate: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/singin-in-the-public-domain-public-domain-day-… It's vital to have Free methods of sharing documents and media, but it helps to have entertaining Free content as well. Thank you.

You can choose your goal for the month. For instance, write 1 blog post in November. There's a section which says you can choose a buddy. Haven't tried it out, but I signed in as lmemsm. So, please let me know if you can add me as a buddy in that field or let me know your username at sign up and I'll see if I can add you. Thanks again for offering to participate and hope you have fun with your writing projects. I believe the Digital Freedom Foundation is also accepting guest blog posts on DFD, SFD and HFD related topics. If anyone needs a place to share their writing that may be a viable option.

November Writing Month
by LM Nov. 12, 2024

Nov. 12, 2024

If you're familiar with NaNoWriMo, someone's started a FLOSS alternative to it called Writing Month. You can sign up for it here: https://writingmonth.org/ There is an option to write with buddies. I thought it might be fun to do a writing project with blog posts for Document Freedom Day. If anyone else would like to join in and help get the word out for Document Freedom Day or Hardware or Software Freedom Day, this provides a fun and novel way to do it. If you would like to do some blog posts, articles, etc. as a team, let me know and we can coordinate a project through the Writing Month challenge. Hope to hear from you.

Thanks for the links and suggestions. Enjoyed browsing the berklix.org site. It has some great resources. I've always liked the idea behind CTM and enjoyed reading your information on BSD. It's a great operating system. Sincerely, Laura
