Hardware Freedom Day 2025
by LM Oct. 17, 2024

Oct. 17, 2024

I know it's a bit early but Hardware Freedom Day 2025 ( https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/hfd/blog ) is in April (about 6 months away). With all the recent hurricanes and power outages in the US, I thought it would be interesting to investigate Open Hardware options for dealing with off-the-grid emergency situations. So, I've started a list of Open Hardware and Free Software resources for emergency situations: https://codeberg.org/lmemsm/delightful-off-grid-open-tech Also have some discussion going on about it on Mastodon: https://fosstodon.org/@lmemsm/113306000552570651 If you have any suggestions to add to the list, please let me know. Thanks.

digitalfreedoms.org website - photo upload
by Jurgen (Digital Freedom Foundation) Oct. 1, 2024

Oct. 1, 2024

Hi all, There have been some nice improvements on the website (and some important fixes) that I would like to share with all of you, now that Software Freedom Day is over. *1. Huion Art challenge* The submission form to enter the Huion competition <https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/blog/art-for-digital-freedom-huion-chall…> seemed to be broken. I looked into it, and have it fixed. Please ask your local artists (of all ages!!) to submit their entries on this page: * https://digitalfreedoms.org/2024-huion-challenge *2. Upload your images to the website* You can upload images to the website - so appear on the front page slideshow (square form factor please) - or to have a gallery on your event page. * https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/documentation/uploading-photos-to-the-website *3. We added a Spanish translation of the basic pages* There were some requests for a Spanish translation of the website. We don't have Spanish speaking board members (currently, the pages are AI translated), so feedback on language errors is welcome! (you can send me). There is still an issue with the landing page, but still researching it (couldn't solve it yet though) https://digitalfreedoms.org/es/sfd/blog Do you want the site in another language? If you volunteer to help proof-reading, we can set up other translations. Reach out to me personally. *4. Small events...* I heard a few people say something like:/"Yeah, we organized Software Freedom Day too... but it was only a small event. I didn't want to put it on the map."/ If you did... please put it on the map! Currently, it's important to have a map showing a lot of events, and basically SFD is about reaching local people. So even if you only celebrated the event with 3 other people... it still counts as SFD for me. *5. Sponsorship* In the next month, we'll be reaching out to companies who might be open to support Software Freedom Day and help pay for swag. Do you know people in companies that might be interested in supporting our cause? Please get in touch with me so you can connect me with this/these person(s). (for US based companies, donations can be tax deductible (503(c)1). Greetings, Jurgen

Re: Looking for logging software for entering daily results from a fingertip blood glucose meter
by Don Saklad Sept. 21, 2024

Sept. 21, 2024

Looking for logging software for entering daily results from a fingertip blood glucose meter that isn't meter manufacturer software in an app with unknown stuff ! or is there a better List to ask about this, a better resource of free software advocates? Any other hints, tips, pointers, ideas? in addition to... Finding Alternative Software for Blood Glucose Meter Data Understanding the Need: It's understandable to want more control and transparency over your blood glucose data. Many people prefer to have options beyond the default app provided by the meter manufacturer. Here are some avenues to explore: 1. Third-Party Health Apps: MyFitnessPal: This popular calorie-tracking app often integrates with blood glucose meters. HealthKit (iOS): If your meter supports HealthKit, you can sync your data to various health apps. Google Fit: For Android users, Google Fit can often integrate with health devices. 2. Dedicated Blood Glucose Tracking Apps: Carb Manager: While primarily known for carb tracking, it often supports blood glucose meters. Diabetologist: This app is specifically designed for diabetes management and may offer advanced features. 3. Cloud-Based Platforms: Nightscout: This open-source platform allows you to upload your data and visualize it in various ways. Dexcom Share: While primarily for CGM data, it might have options for integrating blood glucose meter data. 4. DIY Solutions: LibreLink Up: If you use a Libre sensor, you can use this app to upload data and share it with others. Custom Software: If you're tech-savvy, you could explore creating your own software or using APIs to connect your meter to a custom solution. Important Considerations: Compatibility: Ensure the software you choose is compatible with your specific blood glucose meter model. Data Security: Be cautious about sharing your health data with third-party apps. Research their privacy policies and security measures. Features: Consider what features you need, such as trend analysis, meal logging, or integration with other health devices. Additional Tips: Check Meter Manufacturer's Website: Sometimes, the manufacturer may offer alternative software options or APIs for developers. Online Forums: Communities like Reddit or diabetes-specific forums might have recommendations or discussions about different software options. Consult with Your Healthcare Provider: They may have specific suggestions or insights based on your needs and preferences. By exploring these options, you can likely find a suitable solution that gives you more control over your blood glucose data and better aligns with your preferences.

SFD Highlights page
by LM Sept. 20, 2024

Sept. 20, 2024

I tried to get a highlights page added to the DFF blog. Due to technical difficulties beyond my control, I'm putting the Highlights page here: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/30017.html I can update it more easily with links to resources or videos that teams may want to share. We can move it to the official DFF site afterwards. There are a few resources already posted to the page for starters and I'll be adding more. Please send me any links or other information you may want to contribute. Also, would appreciate any chatter you can add to Mastodon about #SFD2024 in general or your local events. Have a great Software Freedom Day 2024!

List of cities organizing SFD 2024
by ParaLivre Sept. 20, 2024

Sept. 20, 2024

Is there a link to the cities that will hold Software Freedom Day 2024? On the official website at https://digitalfreedoms.org/ we only have a map with links to city pages with some information. It would be interesting if there was a page that listed the cities that will hold Software Freedom Day 2024 organized by continent, country and city. -- José Roberto da Costa Ferreira Coordenador da ParaLivre - Comunidade Paraense de Software Livre

Software Freedom Day highlights
by LM Sept. 20, 2024

Sept. 20, 2024

Happy Software Freedom Day. Some countries are already celebrating and the rest of us we'll be joining them within the next 24 hours. Please use this mailing list to share how things are going with your events. If you need any information shared on the DFF social media accounts, let me know. I'll be monitoring Mastodon and checking the other social media accounts and trying to boost or like any posts related to #SFD2024 or #SoftwareFreedomDay2024. I'd love to get some traffic about Software Freedom Day going on Mastodon, so if you or any of your SFD attendees have Mastodon accounts, please post. We're working on trying to add a highlights page as a blog post to the DFF web site. If you have videos you'll be showing or digital resources you'll be sharing at your event that you wouldn't mind sharing with other groups, we can add them to the resources page. If you have pictures or recordings or articles about how your event went that you'd like to share afterwards, we'll add them as well. We're hoping the highlights will encourage people who didn't participate in Software Freedom Day this year to do so next year or maybe even create their own event next Software Freedom Day. Jurgen has a wonderful opening speech he's pre-recorded if anyone wants to show it during their SFD celebrations: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/blog/celebrating-software-freedom-day-20… If you have other resources you'd like to share, feel free to post about it here. For a list of all Software Freedom Day events and times, you can check here: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/blog/sfd-2023 Have a great Software Freedom Day. Please let us know how your celebrations turn out.

web based FLOSS list
by LM Sept. 20, 2024

Sept. 20, 2024

Tomorrow is Software Freedom Day. Hard to believe it's almost here. Some companies don't allow their employees to download software to their work machines. There are times when you may not have access to your own computer and can't install something on a public machine. That doesn't mean you still can't use Free, Libre and Open Software especially if you have access to the Internet. Check out several interesting web based projects on the LibreProjects page: https://libreprojects.net/ Plus, here's my list of web based Open Source projects you can use online: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/28233.html If you're working on a presentation for Software Freedom Day, you may want to check out some FLOSS web based slide show software: https://www.w3.org/Talks/Tools/Slidy2/Overview.html#(1) https://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/s5/ It's a great way to reach people through the Internet who may not be able to make your SFD 2024 event in person. If you create a web slide show this year, please share the link with us. We'd love to see what you come up with. Hope you'll post to this list tomorrow and let us know how things turn out with your local SFD event or share how you're celebrating in your own way. Have a great Software Freedom Day, 2024.
