virtual planning meeting
by LM May 30, 2025

May 30, 2025

I contacted the Free Software Foundation to try to see if there was anyone in my area interested in helping to plan or attend a local Software Freedom Day event. They're trying to renew support for their local groups for the FSF 40 celebration. I think this would be a great opportunity to join forces between local FSF groups and SFD organizers and a chance to celebrate both occasions. The FSF is trying to revitalize local groups in my area, so I told someone at the FSF that I would host a virtual planning meeting for my local area and see if anyone would like to attend. The virtual meeting is May 31st, 2025 at 11 AM Eastern via Jitsi: https://meet.jit.si/SoftwareFreedomDay The agenda is to brainstorm ideas for SFD, FSF 40 and to talk about Free Software in general. I realize most SFD list members aren't near each other or near me, but if anyone would like to attend and brainstorm ideas or just talk about Free Software in general, you're welcome to join the virtual meeting.

Was going to wait until the 19th to post links, but maybe this will inspire some ideas for celebrating Hardware Freedom Day. This is a list I put together a while back on Open Hardware and Software for smart watches: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/26300.html This is my list of off-grid hardware and Open Hardware for emergencies: https://codeberg.org/lmemsm/delightful-off-grid-open-tech I'd love to get together on Saturday virtually and have a short open discussion on Open Hardware technology and what's useful for emergency situations. If anyone would be interested in participating, let me know and we can try to set something up. This is a list of Open Hardware resources by Paul Sutton: https://personaljournal.ca/paulsutton/hfd Looks like archive.org has several resources (journals, videos, etc.) on Open Hardware. Another interesting link on Open Hardware: https://www.beagleboard.org/blog/category/open-hardware I've also done some research on personal assistants. I was mostly looking at software, but it would be nice to use Open Hardware for a project like that and there may be some projects out there doing that. Here's my list of CAD and 3D printing resources: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/13927.html Some public libraries have 3D printers and some users' groups have members with 3D printers. There are groups online that share 3D printing designs using CC and other open licensing. Maybe creating a simple project using a 3D printer would be an entertaining way to celebrate Open Hardware Day. Anyone have other Open Hardware resources to share?

Re: Firefox's changes and Document Freedom Day

I'm glad Marcos Marado is highlighting some of the issues with Free, Libre browsers. This is a great topic. Small distribution developers and many who like to build their own software from source have been uneasy about how difficult it is to build a web browser and how few choices there are for web browsers that can render modern web pages. I've been looking for lower dependency alternatives to the more popular browsers for several years. Seems like the situation just continues to get worse. Also, I feel the transfer of standardization from the W3C to the main web browser developers themselves was not a step in a positive direction for simplifying web protocols or making web browser development more accessible. If anything, they've made it harder for new and independent web browser projects to come up with anything that can compete with the major players. I put together some notes on web browser alternatives. If anyone's interested, I can share the link. I do have a list of web browsers that aren't based on the main web browser libraries. If anyone has suggestions to add to the list, feel free to let me know.

Firefox's changes and Document Freedom Day
by Marcos Marado March 2, 2025

March 2, 2025

It has been interesting to see so many reflecting at the same time about the current state and the possible future of web browsers - even if it was fired up by some bad news from Mozilla. Still, it is important to acknowledge what is and has been going on - how a web browser currently became a lot more than just a piece of software implementing a number of open standards, how they are all basically based over one of two existing browser agents (Gecko and Webkit) with the emergence of two upcoming ones (Servo and LibWeb); the difficulties of creating or maintaining a new web browser, or how dependent are all firefox forks (or older, harder derivatives like SeaMonkey) of Mozilla (both Firefox and Gecko). I'm not trying to get to any point with this text, but rather to highlight that now is the time to have a few conversations around open standards, and in particular web standards. And as it happens, the "annual day" to have discussions of that sort is around the corner: Document Freedom Day 2025 is already in the 26th of this month. So why aren't there more events on the map? How is your community, user group, etc. going to mark and celebrate this day? Organize something, and put it on the events map, right this way: https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/dfd -- Marcos Marado

What tools or programs do you use to convert org mode style documents to ical format? That sounds really nice.
