We're at 16 days and counting until Software Freedom Day, the 20th edition.
We're up to 24 teams!
Unfortunately, there are a couple of continents we haven't covered
this year and I do know of people in those areas who would love to
attend an event. If there's a virtual part to your Software Freedom
Day celebration or you're hosting any hybrid events, please let me
know. I'd like to pass the information on to people who can't attend
a local SFD event. I'd need time and time zone, how to join and
language of choice (human not programming). Would appreciate your
help in finding events for those not fortunate enough to have one in
their area. Also, would appreciate hearing if you or anyone you know
is in North America and might want to get together either to attend or
volunteer or help organize an event in that time zone. If you're
having trouble finding a local SFD event, please post to this list as
well and let us know.
If you're considering a virtual or hybrid event, you can find some
resources and software links on the Software Freedom Day's video
conferencing page:
https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/VideoConferencing
Thanks to everyone involved with Software Freedom Day this year.

We're just one week away from Software Freedom Day and we now have 34
events on the map.
If you have a hybrid or virtual option for SFD you'd like to share
with the world, please let me know.
Was looking through the SFD wiki and saw this idea for a really fun
event from the Berliner LUG:
https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2023/Germany/Berlin/Berlin
They mentioned having lightning talks for naming and sharing your
favorite Free Software. Sounds like a great idea for a Software
Freedom Day event and a fabulous way to share your favorite Free,
Libre, Open Source software with the others.
Hope you all enjoy Software Freedom Day 2023 in your own way.
We're 8 days away from Software Freedom Day, the 20th edition and
counting. There are 31 events listed on the official map and a few
more than that on the Software Freedom Day wiki.
We have another Software Freedom Day contest:
https://www.digitalfreedomfoundation.org/index.php/173-fsf-freedom-challenge
This time the prizes are donated by the Free Software Foundation.
Feel free to participate and promote the contest at your Software
Freedom Day events. Spread the word if you know anyone who would like
to enter.
Thank you.
Have a great Software Freedom Day, 2023.
Hey Software Freedom Friends,
lots of things are happening - SFD 2023 is closing in quickly.
Programs probably are getting their final shape.
Whoever's considering recording or live streaming the events, is welcome
to use the OBS scene collection
<https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/VideoConferencing/OBS-studio>.
Now is also a great moment to reach out to your local community, if you
haven't already. We're thinking social media accounts, we're thinking
mailing lists, we're thinking local policy makers. For each of these
groups, you can find a suggestion on the wiki
<https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CommunityOutreach>.
Feel free to adapt to your local situation, or use some ideas as
inspiration for a mail in your local language.
Currently we already have one submission for the SFD Song challenge.
Don't forget submit your entry too!
The FSF is also awarding some prizes to winning teams! Keep an eye on
our Mastodon account <https://fosstodon.org/@dff> (or one of the other
social media accounts
<https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/SocialNetworks>), the Matrix
channel <https://matrix.to/#/#SoftwareFreedomDay:matrix.org> or the
mailing list for updates.
Grtz,
Jurgen

Thanks to everyone involved with Software Freedom Day this year.
We're at 13 days and counting until Software Freedom Day, the 20th edition.
Just a reminder to include the timezone when you advertise or let
people know about your Software Freedom Day events.
A few years ago, I forgot to add the timezone and had people tuning it
at the appointed time but for their timezones. So, they came too
early or missed things. Since we're worldwide, people anywhere in the
world could see information about your event, but they may not
remember to adjust for the time difference between their location and
yours.
I've seen mentions for events that look like they'll be really
great including these:
https://sfd.nosk.org.np/http://tiny.cc/sfd23https://kielux.de/p/KOLT23
Feel free to post about your own events on this mailing list. We'd be
happy to mention them on the Digital Freedom Foundation's social media
accounts.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Software Freedom Day next week.
Just to update list members on some of the actions going on, the new
DFF board is working getting a few prizes for Software Freedom Day
contests. The contests are open to anyone. Feel free to promote them
at your local SFD event if you'd like.
There's a SFD song contest with a prize from MuseScore. More details here:
https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/SFDSongContest
The Free Software Foundation has also donated some prizes. Contest
rules will be forthcoming.
If anyone's interested in getting more involved or becoming part of
the new DFF board, feel free to join us on matrix:
https://matrix.to/#/#SoftwareFreedomDay:matrix.org
We're at 17 days and counting down to Software Freedom Day.
If you need any help organizing a local event, registering your event
on the wiki or publicizing, please let us know.
If you'd like to share information about a local event to the Digital
Freedom Foundation's Mastodon account or other social media accounts,
send us a post about it.
There are some sample outreach communications on the Software Freedom
Day wiki at: https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CommunityOutreach
You're welcome to remix and reuse them.
Thanks to all of you who have participated in Software Freedom Day
over the years. Let's make this 20th edition a year to remember.
Hey all,
for the next edition of Software Freedom Day, the artist /*RoadArchie*/
created some really nice artwork - including a celebration edition of
the logo for the 20th edition of SFD.
You can find the artwork here:
https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2023/Artwork
So customize the countdown banner, we'd need your help translating 4
short strings into as many languages as possible.
You can add/edit the strings to your language in this Collabora Office
spreadsheet: https://jurgeng.ocloud.de/index.php/s/pXf9H7kpk4aMANA
Here's already a preview of the countdown banner:
SFD Countdown banner
Also, if you would like to write a Software Freedom Day Song (or you
already did in the past), would you like to share it? (a recording, or
maybe even a MuseScore <https://musescore.org> file?) Just imagine your
SFD song being sung al over the world, in a happy creative commons tune ...
So don't forget to keep Saturday 16th of September on your agenda!
Really looking forward to be rocking to the Software Freedom Day beat
this year!
Jurgen
