United Nations and Software Freedom Day

Hi all, The Software Freedom International Board will be aiming for United Nations recognition of Software Freedom Day as a day of international importance for 2008. We wanted to let you all know so that you can try extra hard to keep track of the numbers and successes you have over Software Freedom Day, as it will all contribute to our case in helping the world understand the importance of Software Freedom. If anyone would like to help us with this quest, please let us know, or even reply to this post with your thoughts. We feel strongly that Software Freedom underpins our basic human rights in a highly digital world, and so want to help the UN understand and promote software freedom as a way to maintain our human rights: http://softwarefreedomday.org/SoftwareFreedom There are already United Nations projects that are strongly supportive of FOSS such as IOSN (http://www.iosn.net/) UNESCO (http://www.unesco.org/cgi-bin/webworld/portal_freesoftware/cgi/page.cgi?d=1) and more, but SFD is as yet not a "Special Day" on their website (http://www.un.org/events/) nor is Software Freedom spoken about officially, something to work towards :) Thank you all for your participation and in taking Software Freedom to your communities! Software Freedom Song

To celebrate the Software Freedom Day, I drafted a Software Freedom Song. I am too busy to prepare FPT activities for Software Freedom Day Hanoi 2007 (I'm the director of FPT Open Solutions), so the lyrics is not so smooth yet. Please listen to the midi and comment. It'll be greate if someone can add the vocal, because my vocal is too bad, I don't want to spoil. Promotion of SFD on Digg/Slashdot

Hello, I was wondering if there was an organized effort to promote SFD on Digg and Slashdot. It seems that they would be two likely places to promote awareness of the event. I did searches to see if Software Freedom Day had been submitted and that it pointed to SoftwareFreedomDay.org rather than a news site or someone's blog. Free Software OSX CD

Hi, Just had an enquiry from a Mac user about whether we would be platform agnostic at our event on Saturday. It hadn't occurred to me to see if there was an OpenCD equivalent for OSX. I've just added a SFD-customised version of Eric Meyer's S5 HTML/CSS/JavaScript slideshow system to the Artwork page. http://softwarefreedomday.org/Artwork?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=S5-SF… It's a bit kludgy, but if, like me, you've left it till the last couple of days to prepare any presentations, you may find it useful. Not guaranteed to work in anything but Firefox. In fact not really guaranteed to work there, either, but that's where your chances are best. Mark Shuttleworth Interview for Software Freedom Day

Last Thursday we received a DVD from Mark Shuttleworth with a 14.5 minute interview using questions that I submitted. My husband, Jan, re-encoded it and reduced it from one gigabyte to 152 megabytes. The questions relate to how he got involved in Open Source, his experience in space, why he decided to start Ubuntu, what the word ubuntu means, and how he feels about the progress of open source and Ubuntu to date. It is now available for download at: http://www.archive.org/details/Mark_Shuttleworth_SFD It took us about 3 hours to upload the file, but your connection may be faster. We think it's an excellent interview. He starts and ends complimenting the work done on Software Freedom Day and wishes us success on this one. It is not "dated" so it will be appropriate for at least a couple of years, or to use as you see fit. It's under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike open source license.
