Software Freedom Day Cleveland Conference
by boscagarda-meetup2345d＠yahoo.com Sept. 13, 2008

Sept. 13, 2008

Howdy Yall! I have waited to say too much until we had some things in place. But our plans for Software Freedom Day Cleveland are moving along. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to set the date much later than the rest of yall will be celebrating. But we have a great team on board to help us make a knock out conference. We are shooting for an attendance of about 200 to 250 including volunteers for an all day conference. We've already got sponsors signing on and more work is being done to encourage more sponsorship. We're definitely looking for speakers if you would be interested. We will have more posted on this shortly. To see our announcement and then links to our sites just go to: http://softwarefreedomday.org/teams/ClevelandOhio Of course I want to thank everyone that is involved with helping us. The volunteers are reallying starting to pull together to give us the help we need. Thanks to yall for setting up this on a global scale, as it helps us to be part of something much larger than ourselves. Many Kind Regards, Joseph James Frantz (Aoirthoir)

Change event coordinates?
by gk＠fsfe.org Sept. 12, 2008

Sept. 12, 2008

Hello everyone, When I registered our team, we did not know where exactly our event will take place, so I set the coordinates in this Google Maps applet to the center of our city. Now that we know the exact location I would like to correct this. How do I do that, or whom do I have to contact? Thanks in advance! Regards, georg -- We could change the world if god gave us the source.

Ubuntu LoCo, OLPC, and electronics hackers join for SFD
by Kevin Cole Sept. 11, 2008

Sept. 11, 2008

Greetings from Brain-Washington, DC. Pia suggested I forward my message on to this list, and so, without further ado: This will be the Ubuntu DC LoCo's fourth year doing SFD (albeit not exactly on the right day), and the third at the Takoma Park Folk Festival. In addition to being the team contact for the Ubuntu DC LoCo, I'm also involved with the OLPC Learning Club DC, and HacDC -- a hardware/electronics hacking group with many Free Software advocates. I invited them to join us at the Takoma Park Folk Festival. So, this year, there will be three tech tables instead of just one. Together we're adding "Folk Tech-ery" ("Folk Geek-ery"?) to the "Folk Music" and "Folk Art" of the festival. ;-) References: 00. http://tpff.org/ 01. http://dc.ubuntu-us.org/ 10. http://olpclearningclub.org/ 11. http://hacdc.org/ -- Ubuntu Linux DC LoCo Washington, DC http://dc.ubuntu-us.org/

Celebrated SFD today to coincide with Teacher's Day
by shirish Sept. 11, 2008

Sept. 11, 2008

Hi all, We decided to celebrate SFD today to co-incide with Teacher's Day .While one reason was that both the events talk so much about freedom and sharing, few others which were related to managing things (in short couldn't help it) It was a small low-profile event with about 50-60 odd people attending and having a good time. I would be putting up a detailed blog post on the same with pictures and everything in couple of days. Best of luck with your preparations and hope to know more what other people are upto :) That's it for now from me. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal This email is licensed under http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ 065C 6D79 A68C E7EA 52B3 8D70 950D 53FB 729A 8B17

Think about schools on the day
by Peter Ruwoldt Sept. 10, 2008

Sept. 10, 2008

Hi If we accept that schools are one of the key mechanisms for change in society, then the idea of helping schools to think about the opportunities that FOSS can offer is a worthy pursuit. If you are looking for an activity for your team on the day then possibly doing something in the education arena might be a go - make a movie or some sort of presentation and publish it - collate resources (we have started something on the SFD website that you could contribute to) - invite teachers from local schools to your event - ? Hope this helps Peter -- Free and Open education for all Peter Ruwoldt Grant High School Hosking Avenue MOUNT GAMBIER SA 5290 P. 08 87263128 F. 08 87250173 ruwoldtp(a)granths.sa.edu.au http://ruwoldtp.googlepages.com/

Rosario Software Libre V1.0, 5th Software Freedom Day, 10th L.U.G.Ro. Install Fest
by Julio Cesar Puigpinos Sept. 10, 2008

Sept. 10, 2008

Press release of the SFD 2008 in Rosario, Argentina. -------------------------------------------------------------------- First promotion Day of Free Software for the Community * September 20 | 9.30 AM * CMD Centro "Antonio Berni", Wheelwright 1486, Rosario (Argentina) Under the 5th Software Freedom Day [0], the Municipality of Rosario supports this celebration world with the completion of the event Rosario Software Libre v1.0 [1] the next September 20 from 9.30 AM in the CMD Centro "Antonio Berni", Wheelwright 1486, Rosario (Argentina). The GNU/Linux User Group of Rosario (LUGRO) [2] and the New Technologies Asociation (ANT - Asociación de Nuevas Tecnologías [3]) we'll be supporting the event and organizing it together. Rosario Software libre v1.0 is addressed to all those who wish to learn more about free software, install it and use it on their computers in terms of legality, preserving the value of freedom. Are scheduled talks, lectures, activities educational and demonstrations. >From 2:30PM, will take place the 10th Free Software Install Fest of the L.U.G.Ro., opportunity in which those interest to have free tools on their computers can come (with their desktop or notebook) and learn how to install them. Share experiences ----------------------------- The goal of Rosario Software Libre v1.0 is sharing its own experience of internal management and disseminate local policy implementation of free software of the Municipality of Rosario in various sectors of the citizenship. It also seeks to create an area of visibility for various local initiatives, and thus, overall, transmit experiences of implementation and usage in business, educational, governmental and social areas, promoting the benefits of it use, adoption and free developments. The Free Software in the Municipality of Rosario ---------------------------------------------------------- The Municipality of Rosario in 1996 adopted a policy of internal implementation of free software that keeps up today. At present, over 95% of servers and central services are implemented with GNU/Linux and more than 500 PCs work entirely with free software thanks to Project Munix [4]. These lines of action based on free and open tools evolved over time, expanding and externalizing towards the community. Extending the use of free software in various sectors (NGOs, CSOs, SMEs, libraries, collectives, groups, etc.). and key actors (educators, communicators, members of social organizations, youth, etc..) is a strategic action that gives sustainability to the politics, helping to build a network of community use. Thus, not only promotes the use of open standards in society for information management, moreover, is achieved to frame the users in a scenario of legality.
