SFD 2007 Competition Winners!

Hi all, We are very pleased to announce the results of the SFD Competition 2007! Many thanks to all the entrants, we saw some excellent examples of how to take software freedom to local communities, and we were inspired, as you all will be to see some of the outcomes and reports. http://softwarefreedomday.org/Competition2007/Winners We have three winners, who will each receive an OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) computer. All winners, highly commended and entries of note will also receive a certificate for their excellent submissions. Software Freedom Day 2007 - Sydney report

It's been indicated to me that I never put out a report on Software Freedom Day in Sydney. Well, better late than never :) Advocates of free software celebrated at the University of New South Wales on 16 September for the fourth annual Software Freedom Day. Members of SLUG, Ubuntu-AU and the general FOSS community collaborated to spread the message of free software to the general public. Interest and buzz was generated in the days leading-up to the event through a poster campaign across the campus. At the UNSW Computer Fair, we piqued the curiosity of many computer users with our displays, screencasts and spiels. Those who were enthusiastic migrated to our room in the nearby Law Building, where we could explain and demonstrate in greater detail. Not only did we have many expressions of interest from newcomers in free software and the free software community, we also succeeded in bringing those who already use FOSS into participation in the local community. Regrettably, I was not able to take any decent photographs of the event. If anyone has pictures, I'd be grateful if they could be sent to me. Hi all, So far we've had 110 teams fill in the online report, and have stated they've reached 22,229 people and handed out 8,970 Ubuntu CDs. Could everyone else (the other 220 teams!) please fill in the web form if you haven't already! Some people sent reports to the list but didn't fill in the webform. I am totally in support of floss educational programmes and I believe that OO will be the ideal starting point as it is about basic computer literacy and not exceptionally technical aspects. I also think it is very relevant particularly to schools in Zimbabwe. I used to teach at a school where the computers had been donated and came with all the software installed. The school had no connectivity to the internet and therefore we could not activate the M$ Office. If we had knowledge and access to the FLOSS alternative, our situation wouldn't have been desperate I have also managed to install Ubuntu on some few PCs that are used by students at my place of work. The students still use them for Internet access (Firefox) and they edit the documents they download using FLOSS alternative. This was not a planned implementation (like yours), it was a necessity due to hardware limitations and they have never complained. Generally students are eager to learn and gain skills without the skills being specific to a particular brand and FLOSS IS A GIFT to them. Xolani I am totally in support of your project and can you keep the list posted on the developments? I would like to see this take-off and if I can help just let me know and I will be happy to assist. I am sure this will be a success. When do you think this project will be ready for take-off?

FLOSS educational programmes

hie eveyone are there any educational programmes that teach computing short courses using FLOSS products ,programmes like ICDL and others?if not, OpenSourceBulawayo and others are going to be working on a parallel or alternative educational programme to ICDL that will teach short computer courses using FLOSS products only since ICDL and other short cources in ZIMBABWE are only taught using Microsoft products only.As we were discussing on how we can get companies and institutions to use Floss we realized that companies send their employees to do ICDL so that they can use computers at their work places. so with programmes like these compinies can switch and get their people to do the programmes.

well then what comes first the industry adopting FLOSS or people/students being taught how to use FLOSS .I believe the teaching and training comes first then then the industry can switch to floss and one cannot justify using pirated software (its a crime) most companies in Zimbabwe we have approached are willing to switch but caught in the predicament of FLOSS literacy.schools are ready to teach floss along side windows. -- member of OpenSourceBulawayo free software as in freedom
