OT: Fully free colorimeter!
by Frederic Muller - SFI Nov. 20, 2011

Nov. 20, 2011

Hi! A slightly off season off topic post, but since it's addressing one of my itches I thought I would share. Richard Hughes has just launched a fully free (as in freedom) colorimeter project where both the hardware schematics, the firmware and the software will be released under a free license. He is looking for pre-orders (50) and ships worldwide. Initial orders will get a 20% discount making the final price at 48 GBP + shipping and packing. Discount assume you'll be contributing to the project by helping out testing the hardware and software and it might be a bit more complicated than just plug-and-play. Full announcement here: http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2011/11/13/introducing-the-colorhug-open-sou… So if like me you've been longing for accurate colors on your screens but didn't want to buy an overprice proprietary device that didn't even have free drivers for your OS of choice, then it is the time to step up. Thanks. Fred ps: I am not involved in the project at all, so please direct your questions to Richard directly if you have any.

Thanks for supporting SFD 2011!
by Steve Rainwater Nov. 4, 2011

Nov. 4, 2011

I just wanted to offer my thanks to everyone here who helped support SFD 2011! Our event in Dallas was small but successful. We had a lot of people show up. We gave away lots of Ubuntu and Fedora CDs. Thanks for all the swag, it arrived well before the big day and we used nearly all of it. We even inflated all the balloons and decorated the room with them this year. One note about the t-shirts - they suffered major shrinkage. On the first washing, my large became a medium. On the second wash, it shrunk to small. :) But better those orange shirts from a few years ago where the color leached out and stained everything you washed with them. Best t-shirts so far have been the bright green ones (maybe 2007?) - no shrinkage, no color leaching. If anyone knows who made those, use that company to make next year's shirts! We also got some media attention on Geekbeat.tv. Cali Lewis came out and shot video at our event, check it out if you haven't seen it yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO3N_N3e7Eo -Steve

Hi! There will be SFD event until almost end of October. Has anyone some ideas how to easily show this on the front page (while we've past the "date") and make it easy for people to find those events? Fred

URLs to SFD lectures ?
by Julian H. Stacey Oct. 19, 2011

Oct. 19, 2011

Hi SFD teams. Most of you have finished, but a few cities inc. mine (Munich) still have to do theirs (ours on 22nd Oct) http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Resources/ Has some movies & sound, but not many lectures. If any of you gave lectures, could you please put a URL to them on the wiki (or at least post to list) I'm looking for English or German lectures. Here as an example, one I gave in 2010 http://www.berklix.com/free/talk/sfd/ Free Software for Engineering & Products Cheers, Julian -- Julian Stacey, BSD Unix Linux C Sys Eng Consultants Munich http://berklix.com Reply below, not above; Indent with "> "; Cumulative like a play script. Wikipedia presentation on SFD Munich
by gmail.saibot Oct. 19, 2011

Oct. 19, 2011

Hi, I could give a presentation on Wikipedia, if you need more lecturers. I'd focus on the history of Wikipedia and explain how Wikipedia works; with maybe a short presentation on the free software MediaWiki behind Wikipedia. Something between 15 and 45 minutes (whatever you like; I think 30 min including question time might be best). I need a beamer with a VGA port. Language can be German or English, whatever the audience wants. About me: I'm 21 years old, studying Computer Science and Philosophy in Munich. I have been a Wikipedia author for five years now, and an administrator for three years. I give presentations on Wikipedia to students and teachers as part of Wikimedia Deutschlands school project. Regards, Tobias

Create a local "Libre Planet" group for software freedom advocacy
by Fabián Rodríguez Oct. 18, 2011

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi everyone After SFD in Montreal I've created a new Libre Planet group to continue gathering and encouraging local activists and free technology enthusiasts: http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Quebec I encourage all SFD teams to start similar groups locally: http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Form:Group We are very lucky to have active local communities already, so this is mostly serving as an umbrella communication hub, as well as a place where active FSF members that live in the area can organize and represent our goals. Mailman interface fails to show URLs to specific mails in SFD archive.
by Julian H. Stacey Oct. 8, 2011

Oct. 8, 2011

Hi all, Mailman interface fails to show URLs to specific mails in SFD archive. Can you please fix/ enhance ? Detail: I want to point my city team of lecturers from city page of lectures http://www.berklix.org/sfd/lectures/2011.html to a URL of responses to global list To: sfd-discuss(a)sf-day.org Subject: URLs to SFD lectures ? perhaps specificaly starting in middle of thread even, eg at: From: Bas de Lange <Bas(a)basdelange.com> Date: Sat, 08 Oct 2011 07:21:14 +0200 Mailman allows this, See example here: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-announce/2011-October/001388.html observe that browsers (firefox & konqueror) URL window shows specific URL. Now try with SFD: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/community/ no specific URL is displayed just http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/community/mailing-lists wherever you go within mailman. I guess it's because SFD is putting mailman in a decorative frame, thus breaking it ? Is [or could] mailman be available outside a decorative frame, to allow specific URLs to be displayed ? Does this request need to be copied to another list eg webbers(a)sf-day.org (where I'm not subscribed) or might someone forward & deal with it ? Philiippine FOSS BILL HB 1011
by Roy Plomantes Oct. 2, 2011

Oct. 2, 2011

Hello Everyone, For our continuous lobbying and constant advocating Free and Open Source Software since 2006, we finally have the first hearing in the Philippine congress for the passage of FOSS BILL ACT 1011 on October 04, 2011. For details about this bill here is the link http://www.scribd.com/doc/34628484/HB-1011-Free-Open-Source-Software-FOSS-A…. This is not an easy job for us since there are big groups lobbying against this bill who are financed by proprietary software companies. If you have related bill in your country, please send us some details for our references and if possible email or write the Philippine consulate in your country and help us explain the importance of this bill. Thank you in advance for your help. Roy J. Plomantes Team Leader Nephila Web Team Quezon City Philippines
