SFD "Registration is On" Campaign - We need your help
by Pockey Lam July 31, 2011

July 31, 2011

Dear everybody, We prepared 200 packs of goodies and we have around 140 teams registered so far. That means we still have five days to get 60 teams! In order to do that we need your help to run a "SFD registration is on" campaign! Would everyone try to find the contacts of all the local communities in your country and inform them about the SFD registration and ask them to organize and register a SFD event? Let's keep track of the local communities list here: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/MarketingCommittee/CommunityList so we can reuse it for the coming years. If you cannot edit the wiki page, please send me an email separately to tell me your wiki login name, I can add you in the MarketingGroup or feel free to send me the list so I can add it for you. I drafted an email to send to local communities, please feel free to modify, localize and send to your local communities. Blogging and microblogging would be great too. I had already contacted 100+ local communities so far and contacting more, will update on the wiki list as next step. With everybody's help, we can definitely bring SFD to more places, so let's do it! If you have other ideas of how to promote SFD to potential organizers, please share them here, we can always do better! *Email* Register your SFD2011 event now -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you plan to organize a Software Freedom Day (SFD) event this year, but haven't registered yet, you should definitely go to register as soon as possible to get some goodies on or before August 2nd! SFD Goodies availability is subject to first come first served basis and each pack will include 3 t-shirts, 20 stickers, 10 tshirt transfer labels, 3 dvds, 20 balloons anda 2-meter long banner :-) Registration is very easy, you just need to : 1) create a wiki page of your event under wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2011, and then 2) go to http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py to submit your event information. <http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CreateYourTeampage>If you have any issue regarding registration, you may read our howto on http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/CreateYourTeampage or contact us via email: sfd-discuss(at)sf-day.org or IRC: #sfd @freenode server. If you wonder what is SFD or how to organize or participate in a SFD event? Please go to our website on http://www.softwarefreedomday.org and read our startguide on http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/StartGuide If you already registered your SFD event, all the best to your preparation! Please also help us to promote Software Freedom Day by placing a SFD web banner on your website / blog: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Promote and link back to your SFD event page or softwarefreedomday.org front page. Thank you! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pockey

Hi! A question about the SFD event date.....
by karan pratap singh July 30, 2011

July 30, 2011

Hi all fellow SFDers A Quick Question... Is the date 17th September compulsory for hosting a SFD event? can we host SFD 2 or 3 days before? I ask this because we may have our unit tests in our university starting from 16th September lasting till 20th September... so it will be great if we could host the event on 13th September, 2011 since otherwise on 17th many students in my college as well as the organizing team members will be busy with tests... I ask this since I *really* want to host a SFD this year, it has been my dream since last year a SFD was hosted by our seniors :) -- regards, Karan Pratap Singh PULUG Panjab University Chandigarh India

Today is Sysadmin Appreciation Day
by Frederic Muller - SFI July 29, 2011

July 29, 2011

Hi everyone, Just a reminder that today is Sysadmin Day http://www.sysadminday.com/ and that you should make a little gesture towards all the people you know filling the requirements either as their normal day job or as volunteers of a system administrator. Thanks to them your emails, websites, office computers (or personal) run (or don't) smoothly. It's definitely not an easy job and you only get to see people when they have problems. If you're short of ideas, you can find a gift list here: http://www.sysadminday.com/gifts.html So happy day to the sysadmin out there! Fred

Spanish locale for the website
by Alexandro Colorado July 28, 2011

July 28, 2011

I still see many website articles in english, maybe it would be a good idea to start localization on them. For example: http://softwarefreedomday.org/es/sfd/software-freedom Wiki is better localized but since there are still many places where the website would be the first point of contact would be good to have a complete locale on them. -- *Alexandro Colorado* *OpenOffice.org* Español http://es.openoffice.org

Thank you too for sharing with us an important/ relevant article to clarify copyright and non-commercial issues.? Upon reading along and pondering we realize how NC could be restrictive and may also be not towards culture and community building. Let us however be regarded a little time to consider our options more concretely and we promise to revert to you guys on a detailed and more positive note. Thank you very much and more power to all, Meric ________________________________ From: Frederic Muller - SFI <fred(a)softwarefreedomday.org> To: sfd-discuss(a)sf-day.org Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2011 4:35 PM Subject: Re: [SFD-discuss] Celebrate Software Freedom Day Song Dear Meric, Thanks a lot for the great song! Definitely a worthy addition to our marketing tools for team organizers. I do have a small problem regarding the license being NC. Organizing a SFD event means that some team will raise funds and maybe even make money (for themselves or the organization they represent). So in that context NC being so vague could conflict with such an event. NC is also a lot more restrictive than GPL Nina Paley has a good blog post related to the issue which you can read here: http://blog.ninapaley.com/2010/09/01/paley-vs-doctorow/ And then some more: http://blog.ninapaley.com/2011/07/04/rantifesto/ http://blog.ninapaley.com/2010/10/20/creative-commons-branding-confusion/ With this in mind it would be really nice if you could re-license the song under a CC-BY-SA or CC-BY Thanks a lot for your consideration and looking forward to reading from you soon.
