Hi all, I was perusing through sfd-discuss and re-found this and I wanted to renew the discussion. <quote who="Steve Olive"> > It is up to us, the Open Source and Free Software Communities, to > encourage the use of qualifications that do not focus on a particular > brand of software. Registering > or certifying skills with software promoted on Software Freedom Day. Steve, what exactly do you have in mind here? We could certainly add something to the registration process or there is also the possibility of aligning with certifications and encouraging teams to do certification workshops and exams as part of their Software Freedom Day celebrations which would both draw attention to certifications and also get more qualified FOSS practitioners into the workforce every year. What do you think? Cheers, Pia -- Linux Australia http://linux.org.au/ "If you have any trouble sounding condescending, find a Unix user to show you how it's done." - Scott Adams

Evening, I don't think I was very clear the first time. I only have *one* shirt. The shirts size is small (ie Size: S). Contact me directly to sort out where its going. If you are in the UK or Europe I may be able to afford the postage, but any international costs will have to be met by the "buyer". Cheers, Ciarán

Software Freedom Day 2007 - Sydney report
by Sridhar Dhanapalan Nov. 10, 2007

Nov. 10, 2007

It's been indicated to me that I never put out a report on Software Freedom Day in Sydney. Well, better late than never :) Advocates of free software celebrated at the University of New South Wales on 16 September for the fourth annual Software Freedom Day. Members of SLUG, Ubuntu-AU and the general FOSS community collaborated to spread the message of free software to the general public. Interest and buzz was generated in the days leading-up to the event through a poster campaign across the campus. At the UNSW Computer Fair, we piqued the curiosity of many computer users with our displays, screencasts and spiels. Those who were enthusiastic migrated to our room in the nearby Law Building, where we could explain and demonstrate in greater detail. Not only did we have many expressions of interest from newcomers in free software and the free software community, we also succeeded in bringing those who already use FOSS into participation in the local community. Regrettably, I was not able to take any decent photographs of the event. If anyone has pictures, I'd be grateful if they could be sent to me. I would like to give a big word of thanks to everyone who helped on the day: Andreas Fischer Brendan Puckeridge David McQuire James Dumay Jim Tsao John Ferlito Ken Wilson Lindsay Holmwood Matt Moor Peter Baker Pia Waugh Rodger Dean Silvia Pfeiffer Anyone else who I may have forgotten (if I have, sorry!) In addition, I would like to thank those who provided resources in support of our efforts: Computer Fairs Australia (tables at the computer fair) David Vaile, Abi Paramaguru and Alana Maurushat at the UNSW Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre (room in the Law Building) John Schilit (IBM and Robocode materials) Solutions First (Unwired modem) Ubuntu Screencasts Team (screencasts and subtitles) Canonical (Ubuntu CDs) The worldwide free software community :) The Web version of this report is available at http://yama.blogsome.com/2007/11/09/software-freedom-day-2007-sydney-report/ -- "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings." - Optimus Prime

Team reports - please fill in the web form!
by Pia Waugh Nov. 3, 2007

Nov. 3, 2007

Hi all, So far we've had 110 teams fill in the online report, and have stated they've reached 22,229 people and handed out 8,970 Ubuntu CDs. Could everyone else (the other 220 teams!) please fill in the web form if you haven't already! Some people sent reports to the list but didn't fill in the webform. This information will be used to help garner support for the event, and to help get UN recognition for the day, so please participate! http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/event_report.html Thanks everyone. Cheers, Pia -- Software Freedom Day 2007 http://softwarefreedomday.org/
