A Great Day at SFD 2010
by Mark Walker Sept. 18, 2010

Sept. 18, 2010

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Thought I'd pass along that the Fredericksburg Linux Users Group (FredLUG) had a very productive day promoting FOSS. We had two tables in the 600 block of Caroline Street in old town Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA from 0900 to about 1545 (UTC−04). We talked with numerous people who'd never heard of Linux, provided them a comparison chart of proprietary applications and their FOSS counterparts, passed out OpenDisc DVDs with a list of several of the apps on it, as well as Fedora and Ubuntu live DVDs. There was a Linux laptop running a looped OpenOffice.org presentation telling of the advantages of FOSS, and a Mac PowerBook G4 running Yellow Dog Linux playing Creative Commons music in Rhythm Box; one visitor asked to turn up the volume so he could hear the music better. Several people said they'd stop by our follow-up InstallFest next Saturday, September 25th, to get Linux installed on their computers. It was a festive event and our whole group had a great time knowing this was taking place all over the world. A great day all around. Best to all, from Fredericksburg, Mark - -- Mark Caldwell Walker Contact info at marwalk.tel GnuPG public key AA482E46 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iEYEARECAAYFAkyVQBQACgkQfCKHDapILkbPqgCgq5hKtVEncjnhXq7rk0WKvcDA OCcAoNWgxCWu8Fix8bdz5d6bPLR2Izto =4vOO -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Difficulties moving to GNU/Linux.

I think what you want is just the opposite. You wish not to become an old hand at dealing with traditional absurd blockages to getting a smooth running system."

It appears we haven't come up with an easy way to connect all who're interested with GNU/Linux .

It appears we haven't come up with an easy way to connect all who're interested with GNU/Linux . I'm one who's trying and failing to understand install instructions even after following and advocating the movement for years.

Dear all, We've posted a blog post at http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/blog/139-6-years-of-sfd-maps which looks at the evolution of the numbers of SFD teams over the years. There are some important points addressed in the post and we would like to hear from you on the subject. you can either comment directly at the bottom of the article or reply on sfd-discuss list. I know you're all busy with the preparations, looking at my web counter I see I have 20h and 10min left to SFD (the counter is local now, and calculating SFD at Sept. 18th 9am). So you don't have to reply right now, but within a week would be nice. Thanks a lot and Happy SFD! Fred SFI Board
