Wiki needs to be updated

Hi It seems the wiki needs some serious attention. I just mention two things: * Wiki connection is unsafe. It needs to be on https. * Wiki page for information regarding video conferencing was outdated. Some links were broken (fixed) and one proprietary solution was suggested (removed) I think specially for this year, we need to provide more suggestions regarding having online SFD. I agree that we need and I would even say we must communicate with people in general and not only those who are already into Free Software. To me, the most important aim for SFD is to reach more and more people, and more the people who have no idea about Software Freedom. So, my request for having account on FLOSS social media like Mastodon is not to delete Twitter and Facebook accounts, but use them smartly and actively alongside Mastodon. These are my suggestions: 1. There should be some activity on current social media (facebook, twitter) to inform people about the SFD2020. 2. An account be made on Mastodon to keep connection with those who opt to only be on FLOSS social media. 3. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, many people don't have idea how to celebrate SFD. We can make a proposal and offer it as an optional approach towards conducting SFD 2020. For this, we might be able to get some support from some Jitsi / Big‌BlueButton instances for having free online sessions for those events registered on SFD website. Regards

What software will you be discussing on Software Freedom Day?

Would be very curious to hear what Free, Libre and Open Source Software and/or Creative Commons and other resources will you be discussing at Software Freedom Day? The target audience of people who could learn about and benefit from converting to FLOSS is more likely to be found on non-Free platforms. I was really shocked by how many tech and programming groups in my area do not use FLOSS and do not know about most of the FLOSS options. Many are currently promoting Microsoft Teams and Zoom to the public and explaining how to use them. They believe they are doing a public service helping those less knowledgeable about tech to use these types of tools. They also use tools like Meetup, Facebook, Slack and Discord to communicate. Lately, I've been feeling like talking to people in these groups is like talking to a wall, but it would be nice to reach some of the less technical people they're reaching and let them know there are other alternatives before they make their choices. I also agree with this. We should hopefully have enough people involved in putting together SFD events that we can do a good job of promoting and publicizing it too. It's pretty much what I do every year. This year, I posted to every FLOSS group on Facebook that I could find and join. I posted to some of the educational groups I'm on. I posted to every FLOSS group I'm on and some of the local tech groups on LinkedIn. There is a SFD group on LinkedIn and I posted a reminder about SFD there. I also posted to Edmodo. I'm also trying to reach the CSTA (contacted three different groups in the CSTA) to try to get them to mention it to their members, but so far, they've just ignored me. Last year, I posted on Meetup on every local group I thought might be interested and on Slack for the local tech groups that ran a Slack channel and I told them at the various tech meetings in person. Had a turn-out of 4 last year, but we still had a great time. We still have some time before SFD, so I'll probably be posting to other groups as well. I'd really like to reach educators this year since they're having a lot of trouble adapting to distance learning and there are some great FLOSS tools that can help with that. I like the concept of https://gettogether.community/ If anyone wants to join and add a post there, I think it will help promote the site. If they have enough activities there, they might actually be able to give Meetup some competition. I talked to one of the local tech groups and their publicizer basically said he only sent members information about meetings from Meetup. So, if sites like https://gettogether.community/ were more popular and people were made aware of them, the general public might start using them more. I typically post a link to the SFD web page and occasionally share the wiki link as well. If people are interested, they can find out what's going on in their area or what's convenient for them to attend.

SDF on Social Media?

Hi I wanted to know more about the policies of FSD official website regarding social media. There are two questions: * Why SFD social media account on twitter is not active? It is not leading actor in propagation of SFD. * Why SFD has no official account on Fediverse and in particular on Mastodon? It's in the list of licenses marked green on https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.en.html#X11License It says FSF recommends Apache 2.0 over this license, but it's still compatible with GNU GPL licenses. I wish the FSF list was more specific over the licenses like the OSI is ( https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT ). It would be nice if they linked to the license text to confirm they are discussing the same license you're reading. By the way, both MPLv2 and MIT are OSI approved licenses. I know both the MinGW-w64 and the MinGW projects chose to move to MIT license for their runtime and API libraries and are using it with the GNU compiler (GPL license). Are you saying that if you use MPLv2 with MIT that it's no longer GPL compatible? Because either license on its own with code that's GPL is compatible. MPLv1.1 is an issue with GPL, but many projects switched to 2 to avoid that.

In that case, I'll definitely try to do something virtually this year even if it's still a small core turn out like last year. I've been contacting tech groups in my area and so far, haven't found anyone interested in attending or getting involved. I've also been mentioning it on some social media sites and tech forums to see if we can get more new groups involved with Software Freedom Day.

SFD 2020

Was just wondering when the SFD wiki would be updated for 2020. Seems like a good time to discuss SFD 2020 since it was just mentioned in the Document Freedom Day thread. Just attended a couple of Linux, FLOSS related meetings using Jitsi. I think it would be great this year to host SFD 2020 virtually instead of at our local library. We might even get a bigger turn out. I wasn't impressed with the ability to share slides over Jitsi especially if someone's running it from a mobile device with low bandwidth. However, I have some info/slides I put together on the web for a local tech conference. Could supply the web links for viewing information and slides and have the meeting for SFD via Jitsi. Think it would be fun. With World Tai Chi Day, everyone did Tai Chi from home at 10 AM in there particular time zone. Think it could be really great if any groups doing SFD this year virtually could schedule their sessions at different times (especially if they're already in different time zones) so that people could attend and participate in multiple virtual events. Would also be wonderful to have one page on the SFD wiki that gives times and virtual locations for all the virtual events. I'd also like to come up with some ideas for reaching out to people who may not have the latest and greatest hardware or who have low resource or older computers or maybe just mobile devices. Any ideas on that front would be greatly appreciated. Think now would be a great time to start planning for SFD 2020.
