SFD Logo

Hi, I found that SFD does not have a stable logo but rather a new banner every year. I think the DFD has a much simpler and recognizable logo. The dove. I would suggest that we will create one simple logo, also? This logo we could use in every new SFD. BTW. who did the theme for the SFD wiki? Regards, Thilo

Hi all, Good day! We at SFI would like to seek the assistance of the whole SFD community on coming up with the final artwork that we could use for the goodies to be distributed for SFD '09 and beyond. According to the initial feedback that Fred got from here (SFD-discuss mailing-list), most teams would want T-shirts, CDs/DVDs (FOSS compilations and a resource DVD), generic SFD (A2-sized) posters, balloons, stickers, and button pins/badges. Before we move on to the specifics about what Artwork we would like to have for each of those stuff, I, in behalf of SFI would like to consult with all of you first if there's a need for us to change the font that we have been using for the SFD logo since 2005. As some/most of you might be aware of, the current logo font (Libel suit) that we are using is just a free (as in beer) font and not a free (as in speech) or open font. On a side note, if I'm not mistaken, the SFD logo that we've used in the first worldwide SFD celebration back in 2004 as depicted in this archived image file<http://web.archive.org/web/20040801002506/www.softwarefreedomday.org/layout…>, uses the Sans font from the GNU FreeFont<http://www.gnu.org/software/freefont/>collection. Back to my main query about the SFD logo font, should we decide to change the logo font (I do hope that we should), perhaps the listing from the Free Font Compilation made from the Debian GNU/Linux distribution<http://fonts.debian.net/>would provide a good kick start for this purpose. We still have until the end of the month to decide on this. We would like to get as many feedback or sample logo works as possible from all/most of you before then. Thanks! JM Software Freedom Day

Software Freedom International, the worldwide organizer of the annual Software Freedom Day, encourages all SFD teams to support the Document Freedom Day 2009 (DFD 2009) celebration (http://documentfreedom.org/) on 25 March 2009. DFD 2009 aims to raise awareness on the importance of accessible document formats and open standards in everyone's day to day activities. Open standards are agreed document definitions which are available to the public to review and use. They cannot depend on formats or protocols that are not open standards themselves. The definitions of these open standards are free from legal and technical restrictions that limit their use, and can be easily implemented in multiple environments - so they can be used on PCs, iPods, Playstations and whatever computing environments we'll be using in 50 years time. Open standards protect governments, businesses and the wider community of computer users from vendor and data lock-ins. Such lock-ins obstruct users from exercising their full freedom in software and the information they access. Computers have only become part of daily life in the last twenty or thirty years, and yet already there are documents that, due to closed formats, we are unable to easily access using modern software. Software freedom will not be complete without open standards and open document formats. Together, they ensure that free and open source software can be created and developed to implement open standards to benefit millions of users worldwide. Software Freedom Day needs your technical expertise

Software Freedom Day is looking for an innovative TECHNICAL STRATEGY DIRECTOR with strong IT skills to help bring software freedom to new audiences around the world. Software Freedom International (SFI), the organisation behind Software Freedom Day, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit company registered in New Hampshire, USA. We have been organising SFD since 2004 and have supported events in over 90 countries since then. The position of Technical Strategy Director offers the opportunity to serve our community of over 500 team leaders and thousands more software freedom enthusiasts, as well as gain exposure and experience in developing the online presence of Software Freedom Day. Like all positions at SFI, this is a voluntary position with no remuneration apart from reimbursement of approved costs; we may at our discretion make funds available to enable a suitable candidate to develop their technical skills or acquire relevant qualifications. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.... The chosen candidate may be appointed to the board of SFI, but in any case will be required to join in SFI's regular board meetings (which take place every 1-2 weeks via IRC or telephone). The specific responsibilities of the role are to - arrange sysadmin of servers - hold passwords and access to domain names and other key infrastructure - implement online strategy including web and email platforms and our online shop - implement a team registration system, or upgrade the existing system - coordinate web design (in cooperation with our Media & Design officer) - enable collection of metrics including web stats, membership and mailing list subscribers - implement issue tracking (RT) system - facilitate i18n and l10n of online presence We would like the Technical Strategy Director to enable us to reach a broader community, including those without experience of programming. As such the chosen candidate should have ideas about how to use various online tools – including social networking, instant messaging, data mashups, online video and RSS – to promote SFD. The ideal candidate will have some experience of online content management systems for community development. However, we anticipate that they will work with a team (or with SFD partners) to actually execute most tasks and may therefore not need to devote time and energy to programming and web design unless they choose to do so. They will work alongside the SFI team, and particularly the President, the media and design officer and the publicity officer. The successful candidate will be invited to work with SFI at least until December 2009, and beyond that if possible. HOW TO LET US KNOW THAT YOU'RE INTERESTED... linux and youth day in cameroon

The Linux school in Limbe join the rest of the youth of cameroon to celebrate the national youth day on the 11th of February 2009.Many people where impress as they saw us machine with white t-shirt and on it was written ubuntu, so they ask the meaning of ubuntu, why we are machine for Linux and not windows, we actually answer so many question this day befor the matching began. We had so many people coming in to the school the following day to learn Linux, some caming in with labtops to install Linux. This people explain to us that they have been having many problems with windows and that they did not know there exit other operating system other than windows now they prefer Linux, since we have explain to them the advantage of linux over windows operating system. Those of them who have known linux where very happy to join us and work with us because according to them they have acquired knowledge about open source but could not fine people with whom they could work together. you can see more on our website sokolo.cronopios.org

Schwags this year

Dear all, We've been starting to prepare for SFD'09 and we would like to know if there is anything that we could add/replace in the schwags we're sending out that could be more helpful for your team to prepare the event this year. We of course do have a limited budget, but it would be nice to get some feedback about how to possibly improve our support.
