Press Release: Software Freedom Day 2009, Bracknell UK: Saturday September 19th will see Bracknell Bandstand a hive of activity to celebrate "International Software Freedom Day!" 10.00am - 4.00pm. It's a day when users worldwide celebrate the freedom we get by using Free, Libre, and Open-Source Software (FLOSS) and the community that surrounds it. 500 teams in 60 countries will have such events! Alan Cocks, Bracknell local volunteer and organiser said "Software Libre, freedom software, is created openly on a worldwide basis, and can be downloaded and used freely. It can even be examined, modified and re-distributed, no problem. However the freedoms accorded within the "community friendly" licensing terms must be passed on with the software. The software that people usually find on their new computer is not free, it is "proprietary", and its licence forbids examination, modification or sharing." Software Freedom Day in Bracknell will be celebrated at the Bandstand, where free CDs help and information, will be available. Computer users who wish to try some "FLOSS" software for themselves, or need more information, will find FLOSS community volunteers available to answer their questions and help. There are many FLOSS programs for Windows. For example, the OpenEducation Disc and The OpenDisc contain 58 quality choices. In addition to freedom gained, users will save a lot of money! More adventurous computer users might like to try something completely different - the easy, safe alternative to Windows, "Ubuntu". Ubuntu is Software Libre, with a strong community to support its use. Based on GNU/Linux, it is used by big business and governments, it is now available for consumers too. Local Charity BeHeard, for adults with learning difficulty, uses Ubuntu. BeHeard members are regular users of Ubuntu which is on the machines in their internet cafe facility, and some members will be collecting donations for BeHeard during the day. SFD: Kitchener: The Working Centre

The Working Centre is holding a Software Freedom Day event in the basement of the 66 Queen Street location of The Working Centre (the most convenient entry is the door off Charles Street). For the event some of The Working Centre staff and volunteers, as well as volunteers from KWLUG, the Kitchener Waterloo Linux User Group, and the University of Waterloo CSC (Computer Science Club) have chipped in to hold workshops, presentations, and demonstrations. Demonstrations will include: Inkscape and Blender Presentations include: Linux for Windows Users, Software Freedom Day: What are We Celebrating, and Reducing Computing Expenses. Workshops include: Intro to Open Education and Open Office We still have a number of topics we were hoping to cover that haven't been filled, including: Discovering and Installing Software in Ubuntu, Don't be Afraid of the Command Line, Why Copyright Matters to You, and Music Making with Free Software. TWC is also planning on holding a Linux install-fest in the Computer Recycling portion of The Working Centre, and we're still actively looking for volunteers to help with the install-fest. Hello Everyone, Could someone please explain to me how the Wiki works? I created our teams page already two years ago and am the only one that is supposed to be able to edit the page. Recently (a few months ago) Three additional people are able to edit our page and also receive email everytime that I edit the page. Can anyone edit (or add) themselves to any page they like and edit/change anything? :) andre

Hi all SFD'ers, With two weeks to go until Software Freedom Day (19 September), I hope that all your preparations for the event are going well. Regarding shipments of T-shirts and CDs: these were shipped from two separate locations and will therefore arrive at two separate times. Unfortunately we don't have the capability of tracking shipments, so we can't tell you anything further about where these shipments have got to - but from postings to the SFD-discuss mailing list<http://mail.sf-day.org/lists/listinfo/sfd-discuss>it appears that numerous teams have already received all their goodies. As in previous years, it is possible that customs officials in various countries will decide that taxes must be paid on the items that we ship to teams. Unfortunately we have no way to influence this, and we are not able to arrange to pay these taxes. Teams will either have to pay those duties, or find some way to convince authorities that the taxes do not need to be paid.
