It's in the list of licenses marked green on https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.en.html#X11License It says FSF recommends Apache 2.0 over this license, but it's still compatible with GNU GPL licenses. I wish the FSF list was more specific over the licenses like the OSI is ( https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT ). It would be nice if they linked to the license text to confirm they are discussing the same license you're reading. By the way, both MPLv2 and MIT are OSI approved licenses. I know both the MinGW-w64 and the MinGW projects chose to move to MIT license for their runtime and API libraries and are using it with the GNU compiler (GPL license). Are you saying that if you use MPLv2 with MIT that it's no longer GPL compatible? Because either license on its own with code that's GPL is compatible. MPLv1.1 is an issue with GPL, but many projects switched to 2 to avoid that.

I recently attended few events on Hopin and they were really good. But hopin is not an Open source platform. Found this article while looking for os replacement for Hopin. Hope it helps. https://www.reddit.com/r/opensource/comments/gldyc2/whats_an_alternative_to… ~Tawishi

My preference would be to put the location of the group running the online event on the map. That way, you can connect with people in your area and possibly meet some time in the future when things are safer. It would be great if anyone doing a virtual online event mentioned that people from other areas of the world are welcome. If someone does not have an event in their area, they could check out one of those virtual events. > To LM: the date is really flexible as it is impossible to find a date > which will work every year in every country. In that case, I'll definitely try to do something virtually this year even if it's still a small core turn out like last year. I've been contacting tech groups in my area and so far, haven't found anyone interested in attending or getting involved. I've also been mentioning it on some social media sites and tech forums to see if we can get more new groups involved with Software Freedom Day.

SFD 2020
by LM Aug. 20, 2020

Aug. 20, 2020

Was just wondering when the SFD wiki would be updated for 2020. Seems like a good time to discuss SFD 2020 since it was just mentioned in the Document Freedom Day thread. Just attended a couple of Linux, FLOSS related meetings using Jitsi. I think it would be great this year to host SFD 2020 virtually instead of at our local library. We might even get a bigger turn out. I wasn't impressed with the ability to share slides over Jitsi especially if someone's running it from a mobile device with low bandwidth. However, I have some info/slides I put together on the web for a local tech conference. Could supply the web links for viewing information and slides and have the meeting for SFD via Jitsi. Think it would be fun. With World Tai Chi Day, everyone did Tai Chi from home at 10 AM in there particular time zone. Think it could be really great if any groups doing SFD this year virtually could schedule their sessions at different times (especially if they're already in different time zones) so that people could attend and participate in multiple virtual events. Would also be wonderful to have one page on the SFD wiki that gives times and virtual locations for all the virtual events. I'd also like to come up with some ideas for reaching out to people who may not have the latest and greatest hardware or who have low resource or older computers or maybe just mobile devices. Any ideas on that front would be greatly appreciated. Think now would be a great time to start planning for SFD 2020.

Here are the FSF links to remote communications: https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/better-than-zoom-try-these-free-softwar… https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Remote_Communication My links on Internet communications and distance learning: https://lmemsm.dreamwidth.org/14124.html It would be nice to see the event list for 2020 available and a mention of what events are online so people in other areas could join in on those events as well. My biggest problem this year is that I have another engagement on the same day and it can't be moved. I'm wondering if I could celebrate SFD on another date in September or if I'll just have to wait until next year.

That could mean more > than 1 streaming channel necessary if we offer the streaming capabilities. Would be nice to let each group choose the software they use to communicate (hopefully a FLOSS one). Depending on what devices/computers people have available in their area, some software solutions will work for some people, some may not. Some people may not have access to high Internet speed or bandwidth. Maybe an IRC chat in some areas as opposed to Jitsi or BigBlueButton would be good for some groups. I'm hoping we can be as inclusive as possible for people to join in, so using different software/mediums should let us reach more people. So many of the virtual events going on now are leaving people out if they don't have the latest hardware/software/best Internet speeds. The SFD organization as a whole could attempt to help schedule the groups so there's as little overlap as possible and people can attend multiple events if they want. The SFD can also be a central place to let people know the schedule of events and where/how to access them. That would put most of the effort on the individual groups and the SFD could concentrate on organization, coordination and helping get the word out via their web site/wiki. > Also I feel there are basic topics which should roll all over the day > such as introduction to FOSS, How to start, communities nearby, etc but > this is only one opinion. For topics that are very general and introductory, it might be nice to have a web, blog or wiki post that we could refer attendees to. Even if some of the groups plan to cover the topics again, it could be useful to have something at the SFD site that points to written or pre-recorded videos of that information that could be called up at any time. Also, would be nice in some cases to provide transcripts if possible especially if someone's hearing impaired. It might be interesting to go through the Linux and Free Software groups listed at https://gettogether.community/ and see if any of them want to participate virtually this year in SFD. We could invite them. > We could do bi-weekly (as in twice a month) IRC meetings with people > interested to organize something and see if anything comes out of it. If you get something up on IRC, please share the meeting info. My main laptop died and I'm using an older laptop. It's taking forever for the new computer I ordered to arrive by mail order. It's very hit and miss for me as to what software will work and what won't. I can get Jitsi working but that's via an Android tablet. Zoom which everyone else seems to be using just crashes. Haven't used IRC on my laptop in ages. Will have to see if the software is even working. I know there were some changes with freenode and some of the other servers to add authentication that made some of my FLOSS IRC software clients unusable with certain servers. Look forward to SFD 2020.

Document Freedom Day
by Frederic Muller - DFF May 11, 2020

May 11, 2020

Hi! We hope you are all doing ok despite the current problem(s). We received an email from the 'Document Foundation' (Italo Vignoli to be precise). It turned out that way: "The new board at The Document Foundation, the home of LibreOffice, is interested in getting the documentfreedom.org domain from FSFE, as the community is willing to manage the website and the Document Freedom Day activities starting from 2021. The current documentfreedom.org website is still pointing at DFD 2018, so it has not been updated for the last two years, and this is not good for the open source ecosystem and for the Open Document Format, which in the meantime has reached version 1.3. Please let me know your thoughts on the above. Of course, if we get the domain and website, we will be more than happy to see contributions from other projects." We nicely told them the project was active and when contacting LO over 2 years ago they said they had no interest in DFD (I have the message if anyone is interested). And while we would definitely welcome any help, we felt the message was not really nice (or really not nice?) and replied accordingly. Within 2 messages more I was called a liar and told "all the LO people are on the DFD mailing list and haven't seen any communication for 2 years. So here it is. LO will go with a different domain and a same or different event because apparently Italo thinks that if he decides something people should just go along. Just wanted to let everyone know. Kind regards, Fred

DFD: to meet or not to meet
by LM March 11, 2020

It's not the same day as DFD, but maybe you can combine with them or at least maybe get some ideas and help organizing for the future?

DFD: to meet or not to meet
by Frederic Muller - DFF March 11, 2020

March 11, 2020

Hi! Rather concerned not to make matter worse we are wondering what to do for Document Freedom Day. At the end of the day each individual is free to meet with others or not, still we are wondering what would be the proper way to address the issue towards ourselves and towards people we would like to reach. Any suggestion or idea? Thank you. Fred
