Hi, I like to bring this idea up even as I of today not even know if we would be able to participate: Think of that you will be able to have webcams on every continent on many places - most interestingly link places in the same time zone or at least with some overlapping - visitors can walk by and wave each other like Europa<->Australia or USA<->Brazil - one also might include some sound. Maybe we can at least think of a good software solution to do that. I think this could be fun and also intersting and only be able because this is an event which happens on many places. It could eben show what you can do with free software and also show how far the ideas are reaching. I was thinking about if VLC would be a good solution and how to decide who links to whom. I think one way would be to make a wiki page where groups could list when they plan to have a webcam online and then we can sort the cams by time and not by country /continent. It would also be possible to dedicate more than oen computer on a location as a link station and just put a sign with the city name besides the screen. It could maybe also help people to get to know each other - lets say you have two schools and maybe those two schools get a link they could even reactivate evcery now and then. Personally I havent done much in video conferencing but wanted to share this idea so that you could think about it and maybe this could be one thing which could be grown as a part of next years SFD. And it wouldn't be something each group only does for themselves but really do a worldwide link. Custom duty was charged on Ubuntu CDs

This is strange. We are sending and receiving open source material including Open Solaris, Ubuntu CDs, SFD's promotional material since last 3 years now and it has not invited any such duty or charges. The package has a declaration and legally no charges are applicable on any such material as it is not under "imported goods" and has no commercial value. You have done the right thing by not accepting the courier. I ordered some Ubuntu Cds to distribute to my friends. The courier came today (DHL) and the courier person charged me 1300 Rs. for duty charges ($31). There was a thread in the list the other day to label the CDs as promotional materials it was not done! We rejected the Courier as we could not afford it.. We apologise for the trouble we caused to Canonical, I'm now downloading the Image and will burn it on 15 cd's that is 10 times cheaper! Hope the other package that is coming from China also does not go through this! I can't download t-shirts! Hi all, Have the packages been despatched to various countries in the world or not? It takes anywhere from 2 weeks to a month for package to reach many countries. Software Freedom Day 2008: shipments are on their way!

Hi SFD team leaders and other software freedom enthusiasts, Those of you who may (soon) be tuning in to the Olympics have another reason to be interested in achievements in China: our team supplies are as we speak making their way from China to all those team leaders who registered before the deadline and requested supplies. Frederic Muller <http://fred.dao2.com/>, a heroic SFI board member based in Beijing, has been working hard over the last few months to organise suppliers for the materials we are planning to send you and shipping to make sure it gets to you. With the support of his friends at the Beijing LUG, they have been collecting and packaging up the supplies in the last two weeks and shipping them to teams in 65 countries across the globe. Frederic has shipped the following supplies to teams: * at least 3 T-shirts * a bunch of stickers * a handful of button badges * a bunch of balloons * a small number of OpenDisc8.5 and OpenEducationDisc CDs The supplies have been shipped by EMS from China, with a maximum shipping time of 20 days to all countries. So those teams that registered before the deadline should be receiving team supplies before the end of August. While you're watching the Olympics, feel free to cheer on the Netherlands because that's where your team's Ubuntu CDs are being shipped from. Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu, and a sponsor of Software Freedom Day) is sponsoring the supply of CDs. Keep an eye out for these, they are being shipped this week and will be delivered by courier.
