Hi everyone
If you are on Diaspora's main pod (at joindiaspora.com) please consider
adding me to your aspects -> magicfab(a)joindiaspora.com
If you are not but would like to be, please email me offlist with your
preferred email address and I can send you an invite. To find out more
about Diaspora, see:

I think in SFD's context it's important we anticipate questions about
using SaaS social networks, particularly Facebook and G+, and if we know
or have tried others such as Diaspora, it makes for an interesting
discussion on SFD, or even a viable alternative.
I'd love to hear opinions on this, although my goal is only to provide
another tools for SaaS discussion on SFD should you come across such
questions. And interesting list of such alternatives for other services
can be seen here, don't hesitate to augment/modify it:

Just to say that although the event has not been registered, I will
be able to do a leaflet handout in the town centre in Bracknell UK
11am to 2pm.

Hi!
You might probably know that I have a weak spot for GNOME and wanted to
let team leaders know that Marina together with Máirín from the GNOME
WOP have made available a few flyers to advertise the program: so if you
have women interested in contributing to Free Software and more
particularly GNOME (it doesn't have to be technical) and while getting
paid, it is probably something to talk about.
The flyer is available at this page (and more):
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeWomen/OutreachProgram2011/SpreadTheWord#Flyer
The application deadline is October 31 so definitely well within our
schedule.
Thanks.
Fred
Hi!
Nearly a week ago Uppsala Linux User Group organized our first SFD event. To coincide with the large event (100k+ visitors overall) Uppsala Culture Night[1] we decided to hold it a whole week early, on september the 10th.
We had a tent down town where people could watch the blender project movies, try out different Linux distributions and of course get a (K)Ubuntu disk to try out at home.
Photos from our event can be found here on Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.200642563334644.49199.15709293435…
I hope all of you have as good a time today/tomorrow during your SFD events as we did during ours last week!
Best regards,
Anders Hellström
Chairman of the board

Dear all!
Forgetting we have up to 26 hours difference between 2 end points on the
same planet and that a few teams have already celebrated SFD or will
until almost end of October, SFD is here!
While we are sure everyone is super busy with the last minute
preparations we would like to draw your attention on the excellent
community participation this year in making SFD a success. We have
received many contributions of all kinds and we would like to thank and
highlight those as they can be used to enhance your event.
First for those still looking for a topic to present we have finally
managed to upload our slides on "Why software freedom matters". Lots of
notes have been added to the slides in order to let almost anyone make
the presentation. It's however good to think about the topic before hand
and be prepared for questions.
Slides available at
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Resources#Software_Freedom
I suppose you are also aware that we've had 2 great songs contributed
from 2 different teams from the Philippines, both licensed under
CC-BY-SA. One of the 2 even has a KTV version should you think of making
singing games. Either way those will be great to add color to your event
and definitely some great atmosphere!
Songs and details, credits, lyrics available from
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Resources#Songs
And since we're covering atmosphere, music and giveaways we would like
to remind teams distributing non-free GNU/Linux distributions that we
are providing a notice to be included with those CDs to let people know
about the hidden non-free software they will be getting on the spot or
later. Users need to understand what is included in the software you may
be distributing. While we totally understand that some people already
have bought their hardware and may just be discovering software freedom
(thus needing proprietary drivers for example) it is our duty to let
them know they can chose to buy hardware that is fully supported by free
software on their next purchase, or be careful about the type of
software they chose to install in the future.
The notice has been pre-formatted to be easily printed and is available
is English, Spanish and Portuguese thanks to our translators.
Link to the English notice page is
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Resources/CdNotice . You can easily
navigate to the other versions from there.
Another excellent suggestion from our sfd-discuss mailing list has been
to hang out on the #sfd irc channel on freenode to show the global
nature of SFD. We have a web interface from the website or you can point
your audience to specific free IRC clients that will run on their
platform. Should the English channel be over populated with non-English
discussions feel free to create language specific channels such as
#sfd-es, #sfd-ru or #sfd-jp.
Last but not least do not forget to document your events, take photos,
blog or share the news on social networks. The official tag for SFD is
#softwarefreedomday. The great news is that this year SFD Competition
has attracted great sponsors again: first we are happy and proud to have
the Free Software Foundation provide Richard Stallman books signed by
himself. And then Lemote, the Chinese computer manufacturer of fully
free hardware (BIOS including) will be supplying 1 Yeeloong per winning
team so you can fiddle with MIPS CPU and fully free software machines!
So thank you to all, it has really been a fun ride until now and we
truly believe that this year celebration is going to be exceptional!
Happy SFD to all!

Software Freedom International

Hi Guys,
Another song on Software Freedom can be found here,
http://2011.sfdphilippines.org/free-song-software-freedom-karl-ramirez
This song is about software freedom and the freedom to create, in general.
You can freely use this not only during SFD celebrations just give due
credit to the artist.
Below is the text of the song.

When what they make you want
is not what you need
And then they bind your life
to an order they fuel with greed
And so with whatever you do they
force you to work in their system
But you know it never is too late
to realize you're a victim
Be free
Today lets make that stand
Come and do this with me hand in hand
And be free
Its the freedom to create
Free to share and educate
A mind to nurture and liberate
When what they make you want
is not what you need
And then they bind your life
to an order they fuel with greed
And so with whatever you do they
force you to work in their system
But you know it never is too late
to realize you're a victim
Be free
Today lets make that stand
Come and do this with me hand in hand
And be free
Its the freedom to create
Free to share and educate
A mind to nurture so don't hesitate
To be free
Today lets make that stand
Come and do this with me hand in hand
And be free
Its the freedom to create
Free to share and educate
A mind to nurture and liberate
Hi there,
"Celebrate SFD 2011 on Saturday, September 17th"
is still being translated to
"Celebra o SFD 2011 no Sábado, 17 de Septembro"
in Portuguese, instead of the correct
"Celebra o SFD 2011 no Sábado, 17 de Setembro"
...
Can someone fix it please?
Thanks,
