Along the way we are going to spread love, hugs and the good word about Free Software (as well as leaflets and Ubuntu CDs) * A technical meeting at Westminster University with 4 speakers. We are lucky enough to have one speaker from Canonical, one from Red Hat and 2 volunteers from the LUG itself * We have a function room booked in a nearby pub for celebrations afterwards. It's going to be awesome - I'm really looking forward to it. ~sm

The Dutch class at the Victorian School of Languages is celebrating Software Freedom Day on Saturday 16th September after embracing Free Software for language education. What is Software Freedom Day? Saturday 16 September 2006 http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/ Software Freedom Day is a global, grassroots effort to tell people about the virtues and availability of Free and Open Source Software. Pia Waugh, president of Software Freedom International said "SFD is an international day, born three years ago, to help the average person to understand how software transparency is important in our lives." She explained that with the increasing importance of technology in our voting systems, leisure activities and workplaces, basic human freedoms can only be as free as the technology they rely on. Free and Open Source Software is widely available from the internet, or on CDs and DVDs. It can be installed on as many computers as necessary without having to pay a licence fee for each one. Anyone can share it with friends, make copies and even change it to help make it better. For example, Ubuntu and Fedora Linux are fully fledged operating systems. It is available for PC or Macintosh hardware and includes the OpenOffice.org wordprocessor, spreadsheet, and graphics computer programs. OpenOffice.org is available in over 50 different languages. http://www.openoffice.org/ Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is developed and supported by a worldwide community of people. Some of these people get paid to work on free software and others do it in their spare time. Groups of FOSS users from all over the world are involved in organising events to celebrate Software Freedom Day. When asked to help translate the first 3 lines of this article, the community responded in the following languages: Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Nepali, Russian, Spanish, Slovak, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese. To see the translations go to http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/MultiLingualSFD The Dutch class at the Box Hill centre of the Victorian School of Languages will also be celebrating Software Freedom Day on Saturday September 16. Students will use an Open Source audio editing program called Audacity to record, listen to, and edit the sound of themselves speaking and interviewing each other in preparation for their final VCE oral exams. Ilja Doulis, teacher of the VSL's Dutch class said "This year's students have been studying the experiences of Dutch post-war emigrants now living in Melbourne, and recently went to the Princess Beatrix village in Montrose to conduct interviews. We'll use Audacity to record and edit questions and answers about this topic to help prepare for the final exam". http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ The Victorian School of Languages (VSL http://www.vsl.vic.edu.au/) is a government school focused on providing language education programs to students in Years 1 to 12 who do not have access to the study of those languages at their day-to-day schools. The VSL delivers the language program through face-to-face teaching in language centres across the state and also through a distance education program. The VSL runs courses for school students in the following languages: Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Auslan (Australian sign language), Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Croatian, Dutch, Filipino (Tagalog), French, German, Greek (Modern and Classical), Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Maltese, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Pushto, Russian, Serbian, Sinhala, Slovenian, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Tigrinya, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese. Whilst the Dutch class activities at the VSL are NOT open to the public there is a Software Freedom Day Bazaar being held at the Melbourne Town Hall in the City. Doors are open from 11am until 5pm. Free and Open Source Software professionals and enthusiasts will be there to explain, demonstrate and distribute CDs of Free and Open Source Software. Admission is of course, Free. "Celebrate software freedom", SFD team invites computer users. Local technologists hold Free Software education day. Press Release: Software Freedom Day, Team Christchurch. 11th September 2006. The third annual Software Freedom Day is this weekend. The international festival of Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) is celebrated around the world. "FOSS and SFD are especially popular in developing countries, where software license costs form a barrier to learning", says SFD Christchurch team leader, Rik Tindall. "Software Freedom Day is about diversity and skill range in computer education." "Few people realise that quality PC software is freely available, without breaching copyright licences. To remedy this, Software Freedom Day publicises Free and Open-Source Software", Tindall says. "Better known examples are Firefox web browser, OpenOffice.org office suite, and GNU/Linux operating system distributions like Ubuntu. All these will be demonstrated at our local event, this weekend." SFD Christchurch is spread over two afternoons, 16 and 17 September, Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm. Its venue is the well-resourced South Learning Centre, South Christchurch Library, 66 Colombo Street, Beckenham. A workshop will be run continuously, advising on internet security and FOSS installation technique. DVDs will be screened, and Ubuntu FOSS CDs given out. "Benefits of running legal free software include greater system security, more regular updates, and a supportive community that speeds both learning and software development", says Tindall. "Free and Open-Source systems are the way of the future, due to distributed development's efficiency and enthusiastic support. Most importantly, it's just great fun to get 'under the bonnet' of your PC software, and make a lot of new friends while doing so", Tindall says. [Planning-en] Update on SFD On The Air Idea

Okay I know I've been a bit slack in finalising details about this so here we go. As I have been asked to help out with the Sydney event, the Live On The Air Component won't be starting until about 9:30pm Australian Eastern Standard Time. However what I am thinking off is running a music loop interspersed with audio messages from various teams around the world. These would be 1-2 minutes long and would consist of someone from each team introducing themselves and giving a brief rundown of what they are going to be doing. The messages can be in either english or your local language. Once we get to 9:30pm we will then be going live. I will be updating throughout the night with live interviews with teams around the world. A special request to NZers, given the time difference you guys are going to be finished before we go live (unless you're running a SFD rave party :)). Would it be possible for you to prerecord an event report and shoot me a link on the day? Right thats the basics of it. If you have received the following through the team-contacts list already I apologise, but I haven't seen it come through so I thought I would try this list. Hi all, Firstly a brief introduction. My name is James Purser and I run a community news site ( http://www.localfoss.org ) which focuses on promoting FOSS communities around the world. I also, along with my wife Karin, produce a weekly online radio programme called Open Source On The Air ( http://www.localfoss.org/Open_Source_On_The_Air ). We are planning a SFD event with a difference. What we would like to do is run a live broadcast that will attempt to talk to SFD teams from around the world. This would be a combination of live interviews and pre-recorded interviews. The aim is to have this show streaming live for those SFD teams who have net access at their events to show that its a global event, as well as help the different regions listen in to what everyone else is up to. I am looking for groups in each region who would be interested in taking part. If you're interested then please let me know, either off list or on, it doesn't matter.
