SFD celebration in Nepal
by Subir Pradhanang Sept. 24, 2007

Sept. 24, 2007

Hi Pia and all, On 9/20/07, Pia Waugh <pia(a)softwarefreedomday.org> wrote: > b) post here (on sfd-discuss) any quotes or particular points of > interest about your day that may be included in the press release :) We had a grand SFD celebration in Kathmandu, Nepal with the slogan 'Linux for Desktops, let's make iT FOSSible'. It was jointly organized by High Level Commission for IT (HLCIT - www.hlcit.gov.np) the apex government body for IT in Nepal and FOSS Nepal Community (www.fossnepal.org) http://www.tuxolta.com/wiki/index.php?title=Software_Freedom_Day_2007 The talking point of our event was the prototype of Freedom Toaster. We demonstrated the Freedom Toaster with the use of mouse instead of touchscreen (which is planned to be done later with enough funds) due to budget constraint. More than 80 CD's were toasted with the demonstrated Freedom Toaster. Although we've already filled up the report form, we will have more detailed report for the competition with all the photos, descriptions and media coverage in the days to come. Cheers, Subir

by Pia Waugh Sept. 22, 2007

Sept. 22, 2007

Hi all, Firstly, thank you to everyone that has filled in our report form! We have about 100 replies already, and if everyone else could pleae fill in the form (even if you have posted your report by email) then that would be great! It'll help us in promoting SFD and also in getting UN recognition for the day. This is just a friendly reminder about the competition for Software Freedom Day 2007. There are two categories of prizes: 1) The best SFD event for 2007 (2 prizes) 2) The best OLPC contribution or plan for contribution (1 prize) The three prizes are, you guessed it, One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) computer systems generously donated by Google and OLPC! The due date for your entries is the 30th September, so make sure you get your entries in on time. All details about the competition, how to submit your entry and more are on the competition webpage: http://softwarefreedomday.org/Competition2007 Good luck to everyone with your entries! Positive and constructive discussions plus a thank you
by Pia Waugh Sept. 20, 2007

Sept. 20, 2007

Hi all, Firstly I just want to say that it would be great if everyone could please try to keep the tone on this mailing list very positive and constructive. We all come together in the spirit of software freedom to achieve something pretty damn special, and to that end we need to all recognise in each other an ally in the fight for software freedom, while being respectful of our differences in opinion. Secondly we will be pulling together the statistics of this years event and doing a bit press release about it in the coming days. If teams could please a) fill in the team report if you haven't already done so http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/event_report.html b) post here (on sfd-discuss) any quotes or particular points of interest about your day that may be included in the press release :) c) link any press coverage you had to the press page here http://softwarefreedomday.org/press Thank you all. It was truly the biggest and best event yet and we have you all to thank for putting you time, passion and energy into helping make the world a better place through software freedom. Some stats so far! - Over 330 teams - Over 90 countries - Over 70,000 unique visitors to the website, of which the Software Freedom page was one of the most read! http://softwarefreedomday.org/SoftwareFreedom - Thousands of photos, blog posts and press. United Nations and Software Freedom Day
by Pia Waugh Sept. 16, 2007

Sept. 16, 2007

Hi all, The Software Freedom International Board will be aiming for United Nations recognition of Software Freedom Day as a day of international importance for 2008. We wanted to let you all know so that you can try extra hard to keep track of the numbers and successes you have over Software Freedom Day, as it will all contribute to our case in helping the world understand the importance of Software Freedom. If anyone would like to help us with this quest, please let us know, or even reply to this post with your thoughts. We feel strongly that Software Freedom underpins our basic human rights in a highly digital world, and so want to help the UN understand and promote software freedom as a way to maintain our human rights: http://softwarefreedomday.org/SoftwareFreedom There are already United Nations projects that are strongly supportive of FOSS such as IOSN (http://www.iosn.net/) UNESCO (http://www.unesco.org/cgi-bin/webworld/portal_freesoftware/cgi/page.cgi?d=1) and more, but SFD is as yet not a "Special Day" on their website (http://www.un.org/events/) nor is Software Freedom spoken about officially, something to work towards :) Thank you all for your participation and in taking Software Freedom to your communities! Cheers, Pia -- Software Freedom Day 2007 http://softwarefreedomday.org/

Software Freedom Song
by Nguyen Dinh Nam Sept. 14, 2007

Sept. 14, 2007

To celebrate the Software Freedom Day, I drafted a Software Freedom Song. I am too busy to prepare FPT activities for Software Freedom Day Hanoi 2007 (I'm the director of FPT Open Solutions), so the lyrics is not so smooth yet. Please listen to the midi and comment. It'll be greate if someone can add the vocal, because my vocal is too bad, I don't want to spoil. The "source code": Today is the freedom day World, unite together Promote the spirit of freedom Tomorow, we'll have the free software We'll be free to collarborate The world'll be full of free sofware Chorus: Share the software, Share the source code, Share the knowledge, Share the ideas
