http://ilugc.in/content/software-freedom-day-2012-sep-15-event-report/ Software Freedom Day 2012 – Event Report "Software Freedom Day" is a worldwide celebration to create awareness on GNU/Linux and other various Free Open Source Software to the public. It is celebrated in all the countries on third Saturday of September month, every year. Indian Linux Users Group – Chennai [ http://ilugc.in ] and Free Software Foundation TamilNadu [ http://fsftn.org ] organised Software Freedom Day on September 15, 2012 in collaboration with Department of Computer Science, DG vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, Chennai at SRG auditorium, in the college premises. The Secretary of the college, Shri P Haridas expressed that the use of Free Software should reach the academic and industry in all the ways. The Principal Dr.S.Narasimhan informed that the faculty and the students should change their mindset to learn and use Free Open Source Software for the daily life and for their academic/research needs. He encourages the students to contribute to Free Software community. Dr.T.Santhanam, HOD, Computer Science Department is the key person in origanizing the event. He told that the computer science department is already using GNU/Linux for the teaching in classrooms and in labs. The students are trained on GNU/Linux, Python, Latex, PHP/MySQL in all the years of their course. He is happy to conduct the event in their college. He requested the Free Software Community to organize regular events and workshops in the college for the benefit of student community. Around 1200 students from various colleges visited the stalls. Faculties from other departments of DG vaishnav College and faculties from colleges like Anna adharsh, SDNB Vaishnav College, Chrompet visited the stalls. 30 stalls on various topics like the following were held there. 1. Screencasting 2. Android Application Development 3. Mozilla Suites and development 4. Open source telephony applications 5. Geany IDE 6. Open source VS Proprietary Software 7. Open Source Security Tools 8. GIMP – Open Source Raster Image Editor 9. Inkscape – Open Source Vector Image Editor 10. Bluefish IDE 11. Ubuntu Linux 12. Desktop Environments 13. Open Source Databases – MySQL/PostgreSQL 14. Open Source Virualization Tools 15. OOAD tools 16. QT/PyQT 17. Mysql Bench 18. Webmin – Web Based System administration 19. Jmeter – Performance Testing Software 20. Subversion Edge – Version Control System 21. LinuxMint Linux Distribution 22. ILUGC 23. Kaniyam 24. wikipedia 25. WebOS operating System 26. MongoDB – NoSQL Database 27. Ruby – Programming Language 28. Ruby on Rails – Web programming framework 29. Python – Programming Language 30. Top 10 Open Source Software >From various colleges like Jaya Engineering College Madras Institute of technology DG Vaishnav College Vivekanda College KanchiLUG Organizations: CollabNet Software Private Ltd OpenNovus Whitestreet IT P Ltd The students from all the departments in the DG Vaishnav College, other engineering, Arts college students and public visited the all the stalls. In parallel, tech talks were given by Raman, Welkin, Yogesh, Atul jha, Kingsly,Balachandar, Subramani in the class room and in the auditorium. Free stickers and Pamphlets were distributed to the visitors. This event gave an introduction to GNU/Linux Operating system and all other Free Open Source Software available. The visitors are so happy to learn various Free Sofware in a single place and they requested to conduct such event regularly in various places across the country. We thank the Secretary, Principal, HOD, faculty and students of the Computer Science Department for this opportunity, nice co-operation and great hospitality. The event is so successful than other events of Indian Linux Uers Group Chennai. HOD of DG vaishnav college assured for continuous events in their college. Hi guys! SFD is very near and we wanted to send you all our thanks for going out and talking about Free and Open SourceSoftware to the people of your community. A lot of you have been involved in SFD since the early days and it is really nice for me to feel I know you (well I actually simply recognize an email address and sometimes we do have exchanged a few messages as well). For the new organizers let me tell you that SFD is like a big worldwide family where we meet every year during a short and intense period of time and make the best of it. Hopefully you will quickly feel at ease among us and come back next year to make another colorful and exciting SFD event in your area. So regardless of your background and experience in running SFD events we hope you will have as much fun and success tomorrow (some of you will celebrate SFD in a few days or weeks, this applies too of course). The SFI board will all be thinking of you and looking forward to seeing all the photos, videos and reading the reports you'll be submitting. SFD team packs 2012 have been shipped

Dear all, As you may know that all the SFD team packs have been shipped. Each team pack includes tshirts, balloons, stickers, a banner, DVDs and t-shirt labels. There is a how-to for the t-shirt labels, please refer to http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/TshirtLabels You may also apply these labels to any cloth e.g. table cloth. We have done our best to send the same pack to all teams and hopefully you should get them on time for your event. However each year we always have delayed or lost packages, which are really out of our control. On the bright side, since the goodies are not year specific you can always use them later in the year or for SFD 2013 if you get them late. All the best to your SFD preparation! Regards, Pockey
