Greetings to all, Me and my team here in University of Benin Nigeria are trying to set up a Linux User Group. I would say its not easy and thanks to Canonical who gave us 10 CDs on Ubuntu 9.04 last year which we are gladly making use of and I must say that the operating system is great and most people we preach it to loved it. We are still on the learning phase of Linux and we love to do great things and we believe that by hosting a freedom software day here we do a lot more talking for us, my team and I are working hard for our website and if there is any help any one can render we will be grateful for the assistance. We're also looking for volunteers to help us get direct site were we could download UBUNTU packages and update for off line mode installation that will help a lot because Internet access is one of our limiting factors here and that is why most persons here shy away from UBUNTU Thanks for your time and the great work you guys are all doing I will like to have assistance in the form of advice, download links, pdf materials, books, etc that can help us, please do contact us. Please be rest assured that my team and I will be very grateful for any assistance that you have to offer. That will be all for now and we hope you're starting to get ready for this year SFD. Thank you all. Warm regards, Odion Endurance

Tagging and planet matters
by Frederic Muller - SFI Sept. 25, 2010

Sept. 25, 2010

Dear all, While you're all going through the most intense SFD moments of the year we would like to inform you that we have: 1. created a new blog feed based on blog content around Software Freedom Day and readable here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/sfd/blogs.html . 2. added Flickr photos based on tagging here and there on the site 3. updated the planet rules in order to get a better focus on Software Freedom. New rules are available here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/blog/142-happy-tagging and will be applied in the coming days. We hope these new measures will make the overall content on SFD website more attractive and stimulating. Please send us your new blog feeds on the discussion mailing list with a hackergotchi or a photo of yourself (we'll happily Gimp you!). Thanks a lot and Happy SFD! Fred

press clipping
by Frederic Muller - SFI Sept. 21, 2010

Sept. 21, 2010

Dear all, I've starting to collect press coverage from various events at http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/press . Sometime it is hard for me to add non-English speaking countries as I am not always sure what it's talking about, nor which site is 'worthy of interest'. So please if you know about any press coverage about your own event, add it to the page in the proper section. Thanks a lot. Fred

Sept. 20, 2010

OK. So add a picture in your wiki page you need to: 1. log in 2. go to your wiki page (can be done either way 2 and 1 first works as well - it's just that a lot of issues come from people not being logged in.) 3. Look on the right end side of the menu bar: there is an "Actions" menu. click on it. 4. Select Attach File from the list 5. You can now upload a file (image or presentation or...) 6. Click on the Edit menu now and insert your image where you want in your page using the code [[attachment:file.ext]] where file.ext is the file name you just uploaded. 8. save (you can preview first to make sure). For further wiki editing you can find all the syntax here: http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/HelpOnMoinWikiSyntax Let me know if you need anything else. Where are the simplest easiest to understand instructive materials for neophytes moving to GNU/Linux ?...
by don warner saklad Sept. 19, 2010

Sept. 19, 2010

Instructive info with the easiest of learning curves. Where are the simplest easiest to understand instructive materials for neophytes moving to GNU/Linux. Especially weblinks cautious about the use of jargon or explain carefully any jargon used ! For example avoiding the jargon term distros, jargon not used by consumers generally. Meaningful advocating. Advocating is a lot easier and meaningful if it includes how do I setup GNU/Linux now?...

Thank you folks! I'm grateful for your interest. a) Shoulder surfing How about some shoulder surfing videos?... you go to youtube, trying to run that other format is problematical, and at youtube you watch people's screens as they do various things with a GNU/Linux setup. b) Grandparents How about instructive information for grandparents?... who may not have yet developed good coordination even moving a cursor around or need a reminder how to turn on the machine.

A Great Day at SFD 2010
by Mark Walker Sept. 18, 2010

Sept. 18, 2010

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Thought I'd pass along that the Fredericksburg Linux Users Group (FredLUG) had a very productive day promoting FOSS. We had two tables in the 600 block of Caroline Street in old town Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA from 0900 to about 1545 (UTC−04). We talked with numerous people who'd never heard of Linux, provided them a comparison chart of proprietary applications and their FOSS counterparts, passed out OpenDisc DVDs with a list of several of the apps on it, as well as Fedora and Ubuntu live DVDs. There was a Linux laptop running a looped OpenOffice.org presentation telling of the advantages of FOSS, and a Mac PowerBook G4 running Yellow Dog Linux playing Creative Commons music in Rhythm Box; one visitor asked to turn up the volume so he could hear the music better. Several people said they'd stop by our follow-up InstallFest next Saturday, September 25th, to get Linux installed on their computers. It was a festive event and our whole group had a great time knowing this was taking place all over the world. A great day all around. Please update your wiki pages!
by Cat Scratch Sept. 16, 2010

Sept. 16, 2010

Hi everyone, Please please update wiki pages with event details and a contact person. I am going to try over the next week to get our National 24hr broadcaster ABC24 to do a story about teams all over the world. But so many registered teams on the map have NO details on their page. And there's no way of knowing what is actually happening. So Please! I beg you, put the basic details of your event on your wiki page, and an email address or phone number of a contact person. Add a link to your own page if you have one. It's a global event. We deserve global media coverage, but it's very very hard to get that if the details can't be found. Also - if you do have coverage - remember to update this year's Press page. We have had great coverage in past year's but not so much this year! http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Marketing/Press Or is there another page somewhere that I am missing? -- Software Freedom Day 2010 http://sfd.org.au/melbourne A world wide celebration of State Library of Victoria Free and Open Source Software Cnr Swanston & Latrobe Sts, Melbourne and the community behind it. 11am - 4pm, Saturday 18 September Supported by Vicnet, The Victorian Government & Linux Australia

Best SFD 2009 Event Competition Winner
by Frederic Muller - SFI Sept. 16, 2010

Sept. 16, 2010

Dear all, It is with great pleasure (and a bit of delay) that we're announcing the results of the Best 2009 SFD Event Competition. Many thanks to all the participants, organizers and sponsors for being here with us each year on SFD date since 2004 and making it happen. We saw some excellent examples of how to take software freedom to local communities, and we were inspired, as you all will be to see some of the outcomes and reports. Definitely a great read while you're still in the last stage of your preparations before the big day. Now to the prizes: the three outstanding teams will receive a Tux-Droid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux_Droid) and a trophy. The highly commended entries will receive a certificate for their excellent submissions. We want to extend a warm congratulations in particular to the three winners (in no particular order): * Bluepoint Linux User Elite * FOSS Nepal * 8Layertech and the three highly commended entries: * KN FOSS * TTCS Web * Emakulam Please do read more about the entries along with their reports in our competition 2009 results page here: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/competition/winners-2009 You will also have noticed that the 2010 Best Event Competition has been announced together with the prizes for this year. The rules will be finalized by the end of the month, but don't expect any drastic change: http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/competition We hope you're all as much excited as us to see Makerbot Industries (a 3D open source printer) joining the rank of our supporters, and that will stimulate you to better document your event. Remember that the recommend hashtag is #softwarefreedomday and all the best for Saturday (or any other day if you had to find a better day)! Thank you all. SFI Board

Announcing TTCS FSWIN CD - Free Software for Windows CD available for download
by Dev Anand Teelucksingh Sept. 15, 2010

Sept. 15, 2010

The Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (TTCS) announces the availability of the TTCS FSWIN CD (http://ttcsweb.org/fswin-cd) a collection of Free Software for Windows, for download. Free Software is software that meets the Free Software Foundation's (FSF) definition : http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html ; The impetus for the TTCS FSWIN CD came from a request from someone from Free Software Foundation Europe (FSF Europe) (http://www.fsfe.org/) currently co-organising Software Freedom Day 2010 (SFD) and was looking for a Free Software for windows CD for SFD teams to use and distribute to the public. While the TTCS has a TTCS OSSWIN CD, a collection of Free and Open Source Software for Windows (http://www.ttcsweb.org/osswin-cd/) ; not all open source software meets the Free Software definition. A list of software licenses that meets the FSF's definition of Free Software and those that do not can be found at http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html Hence the creation of the TTCS FSWIN CD since nearly all of the software on the TTCS OSSWIN CD matched the FSF's definition of Free Software. What was done : - All of the licenses for all 92 programs on the TTCS OSSWIN CD were examined. A short list of programs that didn't meet the FSF definition of Free Software was determined. - For those programs, Free Software equivalents were located, documented and added to the TTCS FSWIN CD webpages. - All of the program descriptions for the TTCS OSSWIN CD was updated to mention Free Software instead of just Open Source and used to provide the web based documentation for the TTCS FSWIN CD. - webpages and program were assembled together to finalise an ISO of the TTCS FSWIN CD. Short sentences on what was done, but *lots* of hours involved :-) The result is the TTCS FSWIN CD - Free Software for Windows is available for download thanks to a mirror provided by the FSF Europe. Details about the TTCS FSWIN CD, including the download mirror can be found at http://www.ttcsweb.org/fswin-cd/ . Date created : September 8th, 2010 File name : ttcs_fswin_cd_v1.00.iso File size : 693 MB (727,220,224 bytes) MD5 checksum : 3a38ef06e56a87199122a425bac020a4 / 3a38ef06 e56a8719 9122a425 bac020a4 The TTCS will continue to maintain the TTCS OSSWIN CD, in addition to the TTCS FSWIN CD. With our experience of developing multiple versions of CDs, we are looking to develop a TTCS OSSWIN DVD and a TTCS OSSMAC CD and/or DVD in the near future.
