This is just a reminder to kick your Software Freedom Day preparations
up a notch - and to make sure that we here at SFD Central hear about it
so that we can give away glittering prizes!
For individual competitors we've got a bunch of SFD T-shirts with
Officially Cool Peoples' signatures on it, including everyone's
favourite millionaire cosmonaut Linux enthusiast, Mark Shuttleworth.
Just imagine what those shirts will be worth on ebay.... And if that's
not enough for you we've also lined up some seriously powerful hardware
from IBM: five POWER5 servers for team entries to the competition.
You can get your hands on a T-shirt by snapping a cool photo of your SFD
event, or perhaps sending us a photo of a Very Important Person enjoying
your SFD event. For the IBM servers you need to do a little more work,
like
* get your local/national newspaper to publish an article about your
event
* get yourself interviewed on radio or TV
* write in your blog or podcast about SFD
* make some interesting "urban art" about software freedom
* put some leaflets through people's postboxes
* get some posters up on the lampposts around town
The full competition details and rules (including the categories for
entries) are at http://softwarefreedomday.org/Competition2006.
Competition entries need to be emailed to board(a)sf-day.org.
Robert.

Go orange on SFD - buy a T-shirt to support the event!
Robert.
Dear Team Leaders,
Some of you may wonder why you should buy "official" SFD shirts for
AUD$20 when you can make your own locally for less than that. There is
some overhead that comes with having "official" shirts, doing currency
conversions to pay for them, and then shipping them all over the
world. In the end, that AUD$20 (and even the lower prices for teams in
developing nations) subsidizes the cost of the free t-shirts, which is
all some teams can afford.
Don't look at it as "buying a shirt," think of it as contributing to
the global effort to educate the public toward the ideals of Software
Freedom. "Freedom isn't free", and purchasing SFD shirts for your
teams enables us to send more shirts to everyone overall.
SFI[1] is a non-profit organization and all our funding is exhausted to
provide these materials to SFD teams each year.
This year we decided to take a risk with the potential reward that
hundreds more of you could sport SFD T-Shirts at your events in 2006.
We bought more shorts than we could afford to ship, at the risk that
not enough of them would sell. As our budget stands now, we still need
many of your teams to purchase shirts or we will not be able to afford
to ship all of the free shirts[2], and we would like every team to
have two free shirts.
So if your team can afford shirts, or you'd like to buy a SFD shirt
for your mom -- or anybody else! -- please order yours today so that
we can ship as many of the free ones as possible!
We'd like to see you all in orange at your SFD celebrations, so help
out the other teams around the world and buy your SFD shirts today!
Buy shirts here: http://tinyurl.com/h3kgl
Discounts are available for team purchases and those in developing
nations; email info(a)softwarefreedomday.org for more information.
Regards,
Matt Oquist

[2] Shipping is included in the price of purchased shirts, so all the purchased shirts are guaranteed to ship. The only items at risk are the free shirts; we may not be able to ship all of them.

Well, we don't have this thing figured out perfectly yet, but we're
getting better every year. :)
Last year our registration form had a simple text box for all the
address information so we had to do a bunch of manual interpretations
of addresses (some of you put some really interesting stuff in there
:), and this year I forgot to ask for phone numbers, and we just found
out that we need them.
So please bear with us; we're doing our best to get everything to you
on time!
I sent the following to the email addresses submitted on the supplies
registration form, but I'm sending it to this list as well to make
sure that we reach everyone as soon as possible.
Regards,
Matt Oquist

Hi all,
website is cranking again. Apologies for yesterday, we had some issues.
Back to updating the wiki :)

Hi all,
I forgot to say _how_ teams can get their discount :) Put "teamzshirtz"
(without the quote marks) into the discount code section of the ordering
process to get team shirts for $15 each (Australian). Make sure you put your
team name into the comments for your order and we'll label the extra tshirts
clearly in the team bundle.
This discount is different for the developing nations discount, and anyone
wanting to take advantage of that discount, please send an email to
info(a)sf-day.org with your circumstances.
Cheers,
Pia

Hi all,
we are having a few little problems with the main sfd website. In the spirit
of keeping everyone in the loop, we wanted to let everyone know that we are
dealing with it asap.
Apologies for any inconvenience. The website for the tshirts is still fine.
Cheers,
Pia

Hi Robyn,
<quote who="Robyn M">

Great questions. Yes everyone can designate those sizes and let me know asap
and I'll supply them on a best case basis.
Sizes available are:
Womens M and L
Mens M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL
Also, you can buy extra tshirts at http://sfd0.sauceopen.com/portal/ and if
teams want to order them they can order shirts at $15 each (Australian
dollars) which will be shipped with your team packs (and clearly labelled).
This is discounted from the website listing of $20 per shirt. Teams in
developing nations can get a higher discount rate (email us to get the
discount code), and teams that can't use paypal or can't afford the discount
rate can get a few extra by special request to info(a)sf-day.org. We only have
500 tshirts for everyone (though we can order more if we need to) so please
consider other teams, and if everyone gets their orders in within the week,
then we have time to order more shirts if we need them.
Cheers,
Pia

"Watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third
eye." - Bill Hicks
Hi all,
just a quick status update on everything. We have ordered and picked up the
tshirts to be shipped. All teams will be receiving 2 free tshirts and can
order extra tshirts at $20 (Australian dollars and includes shipping) from
http://tinyurl.com/h3kgl and we recommend ordering them as teams so we can
include extra tshirts in the same shipment as your cds and such. You can see
what the tshirts are going to look like on the website above :)
If any teams cannot order through paypal or are from developing nations we
can sort out some extra tshirts by special request sent to info(a)sf-day.org
and we'll see what we can do.
Each team will be receiving CDs as requested and some balloons for their
event. We will be shipping everything within the fortnight to get to you all
in good time for the 16th, so make sure your tshirt orders by then and that
we have any change of addresses or anything by then.
I recommend you print up posters and pamphlets to hand out locally so you
can ensure the right languages and local information. There is artwork,
posters and flyers available at http://softwarefreedomday.org/Artwork so
check that out and choose what is best for your events :)
Also, make sure you all plan to have fun. Ensure that your volunteers have a
great time, and that the mood is light and fun. The happier your volunteers
are, the more successful your event will be.
We have 5 weeks to go everyone! :) I heartily recommend you all make sure
your event page on the wiki is up to date, and then do a big local
announcement about "one month to go" on the 16th August. That will hopefully
build interest for your event and get your local communities interested in
coming along.
Cheers,
Pia

Software Freedom Day http://softwarefreedomday.org/
"Women hold up half the sky." - Mao Tse Tung
SUPPLIES
Pia Waugh, the [new!] president of SFI, has just put in the order
for the SFD '06 t-shirts. 136 of your teams are registered to
receive SFD supplies for your celebrations in 2006; this is up
from 90 in 2005.
This year, we're sending each team TWO FREE SHIRTS, and additional
shirts can be purchased for AUD$20 at the Software Freedom Day
store: http://tinyurl.com/h3kgl
AUD$20 is currently approximately 11.93 Euros or USD$15.50, and
this price includes global shipping from Australia...and Paypal
fees that we incur :(.
All proceeds will be used for purchasing and shipping the free
shirts and other SFD supplies for SFD teams around the world.
A discounted price is available to teams in developing nations;
email info(a)softwarefreedomday.org for further information.
The orders for CDs and balloons will be submitted this week, so
we're getting closer to pushing these supplies out to all of you!
SFD'06 MAP
In the meantime, as we've already mentioned a time or two :),
please add yourself to the SFD map so we can see where all your
teams are located: http://softwarefreedomday.org/map/2006
LATE TEAM REGISTRATIONS
And if your team doesn't show up in the list of registered teams,
email info(a)softwarefreedomday.org right away to sign up; we can't
promise to get any supplies to you, but we'll do our best:

SFD'06 COMPETITIONS - WIN A SERVER!
Lastly, don't forget about the *awesome* prizes we have for the
winners of the SFD'06 competitions! We have 5 servers from IBM and
several shirts signed by cool FOSS leaders from around the globe.
See http://softwarefreedomday.org/Competition2006#preview for
competition details, and note that some of your entries ("best
event publicity", for example) should be well underway already...
Cheers,
Matt
