Yes, of course :) I have used 'Oh My SVG!' for reducing the size of SVGs more efficiently. Today, I read that GIMP's SVG capabilities have been improved for GIMP 3.2 (e.g. it can reload / update layers with external SVG files automatically, and it supports Vector layers now, too). As a shameless plug, my extensions for Inkscape (some I started, some I picked up from others) also handle SVG, even if 'by proxy', for the most part: https://inkscape.org/~Moini/galleries/extension/ . And of course, Scribus is a fixed part of my SVG-to-print-service workflow. It imports Inkscape SVGs and turns them into print-ready, color-managed PDF files, which Inkscape doesn't do yet. As for fun - I had a lot of fun exploring a collection of third-party Inkscape extensions compiled and maintained by Mario from the FabLab in Chemnitz: https://gitea.fablabchemnitz.de/FabLab_Chemnitz/mightyscape-1.2/ And I still want to try out Friction (Vector animation tool, derived from the abandoned enve). I heard they fixed a bug that prevented me from using it, and am waiting for an updated beta version or the new release. Document Freedom Day Countdown - SVG format

This week's #DocumentFreedomDay2026 OpenDocument format is SVG. Check out editors such as Inkscape https://inkscape.org/ and SVG-Edit https://github.com/SVG-Edit/svgedit/ for ways to create your own SVG vector graphics. What SVG projects do you like? librsvg is a popular C/C++ SVG library. For years, I searched for a lighter option. sdl_svg was good but not perfect. #nanosvg makes a great alternative. It's used by SDL_image & FLTK projects & others. I would love to combine the best patches from the nanosvg forks. Imagemagick and graphicsmagick have support for SVG. Last I tested, imagemagick had better support. Adding better SVG support to graphicsmagick would be a useful project. Programs like abcm2ps can output to SVG and imagemagick can convert that to a viewable PNG format. 💪 Software Freedom Day is growing, and so should our team!

Hi Friends of Digital Freedoms, Software Freedom Day has grown significantly over the past few years: from 23 registered events in 2023 to over 100 locations last year. We've been building relationships with bloggers and sponsors across the FOSS ecosystem, and we're excited to be sending even more swag this year. From the beginning, we've agreed that active board members don't need to commit indefinitely. With that in mind, we're now looking for fresh volunteers to help us take Software Freedom Day even further in the coming years. We're looking for new board members willing to commit for at least one year, and also volunteers for specific tasks. *Want to join the board? Core responsibilities include:* * Taking collective decisions on how to shape Software Freedom Day and the other DFF events in the upcoming years * Attending our monthly online board meeting (typically around one hour, occasionally up to 90 minutes) * Being present in the DFF Matrix channel throughout the year * Helping prepare meeting agendas and taking notes * Managing our budget, handling sponsor invoicing, and ensuring financial transparency * Helping determine and establish the long-term legal structure and home of the foundation * Setting the annual SFD date, coordinating swag logistics, and keeping the event registration platform running for local organizers * Upholding and enforcing our code of conduct The board is not something for you? But you still *want to help?* We'd love additional help with any of the following. Document Freedom Day - Free Document Format countdown - EPUB

Welcome to today's #DFD2026 countdown. The Free format for this week is EPUB, the Open Standard for ebooks. It's very easy to create your own ebooks. All it takes is a text editor to produce HTML and XML files and a zip tool to store them. If you don't want to learn HTML and XML coding, you can use Free Software like Scribus to design and generate EPUB formats for you. Calibre can organize your ebook library. Bard incorporates FLite Text-To-Speech to read ebooks aloud to you.

Document Freedom Day - Free Document Format countdown - gettext

We're officially counting down to #DocumentFreedomDay2026 on March 25th. One Free format I've been investigating is the mo file used by gettext. This format is a great way to provide #internationalization in a standardized manner to programs. Projects don't have to reinvent the wheel to provide language support. A msgfmt program converts po files (human readable) to mo format for use with libintl which is part of GNU gettext. There are other compatible implementations too. BSD offers libcitrus. musl C library includes support and gettext-tiny makes use of musl to provide a lightweight alternative for embedded systems. There are C, Perl and Python versions of msgfmt. I'm learning more about the format by writing my own msgfmt utility. Have favorite Free formats of your own? Please share them with the list as we count down to #DFD2026.
