20 years Software Freedom Day - and the future
by Jurgen Gaeremyn
Dear Friends of Digital Freedoms,
(if nothing else, please read the last paragraph with a practical question)
Over the last 20 years, many people have stepped up to make Software
Freedom Day big. Under the leadership of Frederic Muller, Patrick Sinz,
Pockey Lam and Julien Forgeat - the celebration of Software Freedom Day
grew further to an international event with celebrations in every
continent, gathering thousands of people. Read more about the history on
https://www.digitalfreedomfoundation.org/index.php/about
On May 27th 2019, Patrick died in a traffic accident. He contributed
very much to the French speaking Open Source community, was a friend to
many and was also a loving father and spouse. The other board members
were struck hard by this blow. This loss, with consequently the COVID
pandemic and personal health issues, have lead the board into being less
and less active the last few years. Recently it was announced on the
mailing list that the complete board of the Digital Freedom Foundation
have resigned and are looking for people to take over the task.
Despite multinational companies growing into bigger and bigger closed
source eco systems, great projects like Linux, LibreOffice, NextCloud,
Inkscape and Moodle succeed in setting an example in an economical
viable way, while still setting new standards for Open Source Software.
It is more important than ever to give voice to the many great projects
out there that choose to be available to every person on the globe,
giving them the freedom to use, study, modify and pass on this software.
Putting Free and Libre software front and center, is a core challenge of
the Digital Freedom Foundation. Over the years, we gradually grew bigger
and next to Software Freedom Day (SFD, since 2004) also added the
Document Freedom Day (DFD, since 2008), the Hardware Freedom Day (HFD,
since 2013) and the Education Freedom Day (EFD, since 2013) to their
calendar.
With the 20^th edition of SFD up the horizon, we need to look who is
willing to step up and put in a helping hand for the Digital Freedom
Foundation (DFF), who is willing to put their shoulders under
respectively SFD, DFD, HFD and EFD?
Are you willing and able to help think about shaping the Digital Freedom
Foundation and help organize their events? Please fill out this
Framadate page <https://framadate.org/OJEn7rqio6NX37LN> so we can pick a
time slot for an online meeting.
Greetings,
Jurgen

Re: Software Freedom Day 2023
by Jurgen Gaeremyn
Hi Fred,
I'm certainly willing to help get things back up and running. As for the
bigger story, I'd first like to have a talk with you and maybe some
others of the board... just to get an idea of how everything looks.
I detailed some questions in the document that I shared in the previous
mail too: https://pad.libre.brussels/7P52HTKGRlOYHM4LWuu8fw#
Maybe it's worth giving it a look.
It would be nice if you (= some people of the previous board) could join
in the matrix channel to help out with the hand-over.
Looking forward to be getting those credentials!
Grtz,
Jurgen

Re: Software Freedom Day 2023
by Frederic Muller - DFF
Hi Jurgen and everybody,
Thank you all for the kind words.
Documentation is ... non-existent. Well not really really but yes I'd
have to write something from almost scratch. Vps installation is very
well documented though. But the rest is really hacks here and there to
make everything look "integrated".
We probably should have a dedicated group for server & website
administration. Those are not the same skill set but some people have
both and they need to interact. Historically the board used to do that,
and everything else.
We once had a guy helping out only on Moinmoin though. So we (you as a
group I mean) could either have a technical team and the board, or the
new board could also be in charge of this. I believe at the start the
board will mainly do tech stuff and some marketing. But not my decision.
If I remember correctly we have the following candidates to join the board:
- Jurgen
- Marcos
Then we have a few potential candidates to help out here and there:
- Mostafa
- Ruwan
And we did work with Rick (New-Zealand) a bit last year but he then had
some health related issue in his family. So not sure if he would still
be available or interested.
I'll set up admin accounts for Jurgen on our website and follow up when
done.
Thank you again.

Hi everyone
Sorry Fred to hear about your situation.
I checked the list. Not sure on which part I can help. Maybe I can help
with social media, but I am not sure about it.
Maybe it would be good to have bi-weekly meeting to sync up.
And what will happen to the foundation?

Hi Fred,
(other people - please read further down)
thanks for replying. I feel your pain. And when hands are short to keep
the boat afloat, communication is indeed the hardest one to keep going.
I hope you're recovering well and the stress over SFD and the foundation
around it doesn't harm you in that process.
Is the VPS-administration well documented? That's a big one for me.
Could you create an admin account for me on the SFD site? I'd like to
see what that looks like and if I can do some quick updates to set the
practical stuff straight.
Given your health condition, are you (or someone else from the resigning
board) in any shape to set up a meeting to talk through this list?
*Hi everybody on the list:*
This has become quite a beast to take over. Let's join forces and keep
this great event alive!
Let's see how these things can be split up or broken down into modular
parts, and make a distinction between (essential) core parts and (nice
to have) features.
Let's figure out how to get things rolling first for the 2023 edition.
After that we'll see what we can do, en where we end up.
I've started with a cryptpad so we can work on the below list, and break
it up into urgents, neededs and nice to haves:
https://pad.libre.brussels/7P52HTKGRlOYHM4LWuu8fw#
Please, also join the Matrix chat if you feel that it's important to
keep SFD alive: https://matrix.to/#/#SoftwareFreedomDay:matrix.org
Looking forward to get onto this.
Grtz,
Jurgen

Re: Software Freedom Day 2023
by Frederic Muller - DFF
Hi!
Sorry I was in hospital for a week and it took me an extra week to
recover. And now the sky is falling over my head...
Thank you for the prompt answers (some which I initially didn't
receive). Subscription to this list is done on this page:
https://lists.mailman3.com/postorius/lists/sfd-discuss.mailman3.com/
Websites needs to be updated I guess...
ok so let me try to start with a short version:
general maintenance tasks:
. VPS administration
. Website updates (Joomla! currently)
. Sponsors searching & securing
. Wiki cleanup
Yearly tasks for each event:
. Slight updates to website to reflect the new date
. We used to create new yearly designs for SFD at least. We no longer
do. Not a must but if the team is big enough it's doable
. Registration script update
. Wiki updates
. Registration soft launch (to see if any problem)
. Registration launch
. Marketing for teams participation (FB, Mastodon, Twitter, Slashdot,etc...)
. Sponsors communication (especially press which needs to be done early)
. Schwag design and creation if there is budget, which there isn't at
the moment.
. Schwag packing shipping 2+ months prior to event
Upgrades needed:
. SFD website
. HFD website remake
. DFD website
. Registration script probably needs to be rewritten as it's Python 2.x
and it could be much better
. Wiki migration as Moinmoin 2.x doesn't seem to be coming. We thought
of DokuWiki as a replacement but... we won't be here.
So now whole DFF board is resigning and it's all DFF events (SFD, DFD,
HFD). There is no replacement but we did talk to a few people in the
past, with poor success I would say (we've become really bad at
communicating among other things).
Hope it covers most of the things.
Thank you.

Re: [SFD-announce] Re: Software Freedom Day 2023
by Marcos Marado
Hi Fred,
I'll reiterate my availability to participate in a new board/takeover
effort - it is important to keep celebrating the SFD and DFD days!
It is also a burden, and it is easy to burnout - so I can only thank
you guys for all that you've done so far, and hope for a good
transition to whomever takes the reins now.
Cheers,

Re: Software Freedom Day in Brussels
by Marcos Marado
In Portugal, we're going to celebrate it within a wider 3 days event
we call "Free Software Party": https://festa2023.softwarelivre.eu/
Thanks for reminding us it is the 20th SFD!
