Friends,
As you might know, Document Freedom Day is a yearly celebration that happens
on the wednesday of March - that means that in 2024 we're celebrating it on the
**27th of March**!
This year we're coordinating the celebrations with a new website and a new map,
but the appeal is the same: local teams - anyone interested in celebrating this
day in any way they wish to - are invited to sign up their event on this
website, adding it to our map and calendar of events.
Register your event or see the ones already registered at:
https://digitalfreedoms.org/dfd
We've gathered a few visual elements you might be interested using to promote
your event, or on the event itself:

Dear all!
SFD 2023 registration is now open! As usual registering an SFD event is
as simple as 1-2-3:
1. Create a wiki account if you don't already have one
2. Create a wiki page in your area under
https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2023/ then country/city/team
3. Go to https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py and let
us know exactly who and where you are.
At the end of all this you'll appear on the SFD 2019 Map here with all
the other teams https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/map/ and be easy to
spot.
As some of you may have noticed the current board has resigned and a few
community members have taken over. Most of the discussion around it is
happening on matrix.org and a lot of changes are on the way. First we'll
have a newly designed countdown for the 20th anniversary, and it's
beautiful.
So thank you for celebrating with us and all the best for you all!
Happy SFD!
Fred
Dear all,
It seems my message didn't go out very well. So I am resending it.
Mailing lists have moved to mailman3.com domain and is now:
sfd-discuss(a)mailman3.com
The current board is also resigning. I'll stay around to help out and
ensure SFD runs again this year.
If anyone wants to take over please let us know.
Thank you.

Dear all,
We had to move our mailing lists server as Canonical decommissioned it
and could no longer provide the service to us.
They helped us find a new sponsor in the name of mailman3.com and our
main lists are now:
sfd-announce(a)mailman3.com
sfd-discuss(a)mailman3.com
The lists are available from
https://lists.mailman3.com/postorius/lists/sfd-announce.mailman3.com/https://lists.mailman3.com/postorius/lists/sfd-discuss.mailman3.com/
We decided to remove all the other lists as there was no traffic
(besides the sponsorship limits from mailman3).
The process took a bit of time as we had email communication problems
(don't laugh) but all should be working now and everyone has been imported.
Thank you for your patience.
Fred
Dear all,
The Digital Freedom Foundation is very happy to announce that today is
the nineteenth edition of Software Freedom Day! Please take a look at
the SFD 2022 map(1) to either find an online event or one in your area,
or simply decide you run your own by following the steps below:
1. Create a wiki account if you don't already have one
2. Create a wiki page in your area under this page(2)
3. Go to the registration page to register and let us know exactly who
and where you are.(3)
This year we've added the event date on the SFD map which you can fine
tune by added #DATE: and YYYY-MM-DD at the top of your wiki page to tell
us when your event is happening. By default we set it to today, but
should you run an event next month don't forget to add this little
hidden code in your wiki page.
We will probably also add longitude and latitude parameters soon in
order to allow to easily update your location should you register early
and end up running your event elsewhere.
At the time of this writing we have 34 teams listed on the wiki and
about 27 events registered.
Anyway thank you again for participating in Software Freedom Day this
year, we wish you all the best for SFD 2022!

Dear all,
Another year and another... oops.
You can now register your event on the 2022 SFD Map, you'll of course
need to have a wiki page for that as usual. But a lot of you did create
your event wiki page already.
The process is:
1. Create a wiki account if you don't already have one
2. Create a wiki page in your area under
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2022/ then country/city/team
3. Go to https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py and let
us know exactly who and where you are.
At the end of all this you'll appear on the SFD 2022 Map here with all
the other teams https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/map/ and be easy to spot.
This year, due to the late opening we've added the event date. By
default it is September 17, 2022 after registration.
We're looking at how to get that from a wifi page automatically so you
can change that date and give you more time for preparation. We'll put
up a guide somewhere soon (today).
Last we, as a board (and me personally), have done a terrible job
organizing SFD (and other events) over the past few years. We are
therefore stepping down and will continue this discussion about the
handover on the sfd-discuss mailing list. 2023 will be our 20th
anniversary and we sincerely hope we can find a better team to run SFD
by then!
Thank you for your patience.
So all the best and get have a happy Software Freedom Day 2022.
Thank you very much again!
The Digital Freedom Foundation
Dear all!
We want to wish you a happy Software Freedom Day 2021 and hope
everything will go as planned!
We stepped in the Christchurch event in New Zealand earlier today and
were very impressed with their Jitsi set up, using the Jitsi free public
offering.
We are still seeing teams registering as we're writing this email so
2021 should be a good sign of what we can do individually during times
like this. And celebration can definitely postponed should you not have
had the time or the opportunity to organize for today!
Hopefully we are going to strengthen up our team very very soon and
provide better support for the other upcoming celebrations.
In the meantime you can check all the current events on our SFD map at
https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/map/index.php?year=2021 and browse
the wiki at https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2021 should you not find
any team in your area.
One of the good sides of this year is that most events are virtual, and
like us, you can probably find one within your time zone and in your
language.
SFD remains one of the events with the most represented languages and
places in the world and we should be proud of that!
Thank you all for your continuous participation and happy SFD!

Digital Freedom Foundation
Dear all,
After a year of silence we're officially celebrating Software Freedom
Day again. Covid had and is still having a big impact on our decisions
to promote meetings, as for most of us, online events mean servers
running free software and having enough bandwidth to make it happen.
Nevertheless this year we did open registration end of June and had some
discussions on the usual discussion list.
So SFD is this Saturday, 18th September 2021. A few teams had to
celebrate it earlier (and registered) and we are sure a few teams will
celebrate it later.
Registration is the same as usual:
1. Create an account on our wiki (if you don't already have one)
2. Create a wiki page under 2021/country/city/team as usual
3. Register your team at
https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py
We have the same guides to organize events at
https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/StartGuide and have added an extra
page for online events here
https://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/VideoConferencing
Hopefully you'll stay safe as much as possible and follow local
guidelines. You can also join current planned events online or decide to
organize your own.
We wish you a lot of fun, learning and discovering during that time, and
for the rest of the year.
For those in the USA (or close enough time zone) there is also a
National Civic Hacking Day at Code for America.
Thank you for your support over the years and happy Software Freedom Day
2021!

Digital Freedom Foundation
Dear all,
We opened SFD registration about 12 hours ago and everything is working.
The wiki has been ready since early July and a lot of you have already
created your event page. Still please head to registration in order to
appear on the SFD map.
So as usual registering an SFD event is as simple as 1-2-3:
1. Create a wiki account if you don't already have one
2. Create a wiki page in your area under
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2019/ then country/city/team
3. Go to https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py and let
us know exactly who and where you are.
At the end of all this you'll appear on the SFD 2019 Map here with all
the other teams https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/map/ and be easy to spot.
If you need further information we have an exhaustive guide here at
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/StartGuide for newcomers and for the
others who need help, and the SFD-Discuss mailing list is probably the
best place to get prompt support (
http://mail.sf-day.org/lists/listinfo/sfd-discuss ).
We have also the SFD countdown ready and in 7 languages. You can find
further information here:
https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/promote/countdown
So all the best and get ready for Software Freedom Day 2019.
Thank you very much and happy SFD!
The Digital Freedom Foundation
Dear all,
This is with great pleasure that we are opening registration for SFD
2018. This year Software Freedom Day is happening on Saturday September
15th everywhere around the world (or almost). While the wiki was ready
to create and update your event page we did a soft launch for the
registration at the beginning of the month and have had so far 2
registration emails which didn't reach the team leaders. If this happens
to you check your SPAM folder and eventually email us on SFD-discuss
list. Apart from that everything seems to be running smoothly.
On the sponsors side as we have received questions in the sfd-discuss
mailing list so we would like to thank Linode and Canonical for
providing hosting, mailing list and some technical support for longer
than we can remember. On the funding part however we haven't received
any money from anyone for the 4th consecutive year due to relocation of
our organization and various other issues. We do however want to thank
Google for their continuous support and hope we will resume receiving
funding very soon.
So as usual registering an SFD event is as simple as 1-2-3:
1. Create a wiki account if you don't already have one
2. Create a wiki page in your area under
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2018/ then country/city/team
3. Go to https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py and let
us know exactly who and where you are.
At the end of all this you'll appear on the SFD 2018 Map here with all
the other teams https://www.softwarefreedomday.org/map/ and be easy to spot.
If you need further information we have an exhaustive guide here at
http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/StartGuide for newcomers and for the
others who need help, and the SFD-Discuss mailing list is probably the

We have also the SFD countdown ready and in 7 languages. You can find

So all the best and get ready for Software Freedom Day 2018.
Thank you very much and happy SFD!
