Software Freedom Day in Kitchner, Sat, 28 Sep 2013

Hi Everyone! In case you don't already know, this Saturday we're celebrating Software Freedom Day one week late at the Kwartzlab Makerspace in Kitchener. We've got presentations scheduled throughout the day, there will be an installfest taking place, we'll have Q&A and discussions in the comfy lounge, and at the end of the day we're streaming the keynote speech by Richard Stallman from the GNU 30th Anniversary celebrations at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. SFD in Lovcenac, Serbia

Hi, Software Freedom Day was celebrated in Lovcenac, Serbia. The event was held at the Local Cultural Center and lasted four hours (12:00-16:00). Visitors were able to hear basic information about the FLOSS, to see how GNU/Linux looks and to test how GNU/Linux works on old computers. Also, we shared promotional material: cd's, stickers, flyers... All computers that you will see in the images are made up of parts that are donated by individuals and institutions. Also, much of the promotional materials that were shared to visitors was donated. Thanks to everyone for their donations! We didn't had a lot of visitors and event was seemed more like an informal gathering, which was not so bad. :) We take this opportunity to say thanks to all visitors. Thank you all! Hey guys! Thanks for the reports (I mean both from Tasmania and from Dallas). We would love to make those a bit more public and if you do have a regular blog talking about FOSS in general we will happily had you to the SFD planet. Besides we have launched the SFD competition offering 2 XO-1 which we are getting from OLPC Australia. Again the purpose is to talk about what happened and how our efforts were perceived. SFD in Tasmania (Launceston and Hobart)

Here's a quick recap of our two Tasmanian events for anybody who might be interested in hearing! Attitude kicked off the morning in an interview with Chris Wisbey for ABC Statewide Mornings, talking about the history behind Software Freedom Day and some of the philosophies that the Free/Open Source Software movement is based on. Our first trial of the Launceston Bowls Club as a venue for SFD Launceston was a success, with such attractions as a virtual graffiti wall and SuperTuxKart arcade cabinet brought by Garry, some lovely Gimp painting demonstration by Mim and the ever popular Oculus Rift being used to show off OpenHMD support in Neverball. Hobart's return to Software Freedom Day was a success as well, with a crowd of Free Software enthusiasts and TasLUG regulars chatting and hacking on exciting projects. faulteh worked on Owncloud, ruagair worked on E17, tserong hacked on his Gumstix Overo board and I hear there was procedural jazz as well! In Launceston we didn't quite have as much advertising as previous years and only managed to get about 30 people through. report on SFD in Dallas, Texas

We had a good Software Freedom Day event in Dallas, Texas this year. The event was hosted by Dallas Makerspace, a local hackerspace. We did not get an exact count for attendance. Estimates varied from 50 to 75 people. We had representatives from Fedora to demonstrate GNU/Linux and give away Fedora T-shirts and CDs. Representatives from CircuitCo demonstrated the BeagleBoard and Intel Minnow free hardware boards running GNU/Linux. We had lots of swag from SFD, FSF, and Creative Commons. (For some reason the EFF did not respond to our requests this year, so no EFF swag). We grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for our guests. We had talks on Drupal, Blender, Civic Hacking, GNU/Linux security and privacy, Libre Office, and other topics. Barnaul, Altai Krai, Russia

We’ve had some 40 or so participants at the event, which is roughly the number gathered in 2010, and (I guess) twice as much as there was in both 2011 and 2012. There was a conference, which took perhaps a bit too long to complete, and we were also showing Sintel and Big Buck Bunny. Finally, there was a semi-serious contest on the knowledge of free software, with the open-source Arduino board being the winner’s prize. PS. I hope we’ll manage to bring one or more photos of our event to Wikicommons [1] (and thus under a free license!) shortly.
