[Planning-en] online SFD meetup

Hi SFD-Team-World(-En), And thanks James Purser for picking up on the idea Team Christchurch put forward on top of our pictorial report from SFD2, one year ago next month. The link/quote may be lost in the institutional history now, but it proposed that team events be streamed into a conference mode that can be joined or observed from all around the world. Christchurch came up with this idea having realised that, as (currently) NZ is the first timezone to see SFD dawn, we could offer to launch/anchor said streamed SFD coverage. Also, as a very geographically isolated country, these sort of international hookups have great significance to us - explaining why we thought of it. Consequently, we have stepped forward in our goal of participating in SFD the whole time it is 16Sept2006 somewhere in the world, and have organised a (first?) two-day SFD built around a webcam-PC teaching suite: http://www.infohelp.co.nz/sfd3 So, once we've mastered the technology use, we will be there in 'the great online SFD conference call' too :-) Good luck with organising it James. [Planning-en] howdy + Ts-$US?

Hi SFD Planning list, Greetings from (Team) Christchurch NZ. All is well for SFD3 in our locale, with posters and newspaper advertisements going out from next week: http://www.infohelp.co.nz/sfd3 I have put two queries onto the SFD forum, where dialogue is not brisk, so I repeat them here: 1) We got our T-shirt order in at the start of the week, with the team discount rate applied of 7 items = $105. The SFD website says these are Australian dollars, but Paypal has converted from US$ apparently. Paypal's receipt converted the $105 into AUD$136.82, which our credit card company has then converted into NZD$167.21 - getting pricey. How did this go wrong? Also, when will we be asked what sizes our free team shirts should be please? 2) Can anyone onlist recommend which webcam & messaging software we should use while running the SFD / Ubuntu liveCDs? And is there a common URL site through which we can all direct our report streams? We want to connect up with SFD teams worldwide too, but don't quite know how - to answer James Purser (AU?). [Planning-en] Introduction and a proposal

If you have received the following through the team-contacts list already I apologise, but I haven't seen it come through so I thought I would try this list. Hi all, Firstly a brief introduction. My name is James Purser and I run a community news site ( http://www.localfoss.org ) which focuses on promoting FOSS communities around the world. I also, along with my wife Karin, produce a weekly online radio programme called Open Source On The Air ( http://www.localfoss.org/Open_Source_On_The_Air ). We are planning a SFD event with a difference. What we would like to do is run a live broadcast that will attempt to talk to SFD teams from around the world. This would be a combination of live interviews and pre-recorded interviews. The aim is to have this show streaming live for those SFD teams who have net access at their events to show that its a global event, as well as help the different regions listen in to what everyone else is up to. I am looking for groups in each region who would be interested in taking part. If you're interested then please let me know, either off list or on, it doesn't matter. Project Report Project Management The project is being handled by the UDUNet FOSS LAB, a lab setup to widen use of FOSS & Linux in UDUS, with the support of Nigerian North-west FOSS Zonal coordinator (Mall. N.S. Zarummai). Ongoing Project o UDL Projects (using FOSS tolls) 70% compiled. o Module (using FOSS tolls) 80% compiled. o Hostel Accommodation on line (using FOSS tolls)- 95% compiled. o Student Registration on line (using FOSS tolls) - o and many more others. The Future of the Project We are very enthusiastic and optimistic about the future of the project. The positive response we have received from the management and the students has encouraged us to continue our work, and to increase the effort we put into it. We would in the future like to see this project developed to having a volunteer visiting the LAB on regular intervals to support the students in further development of Open Source awareness. The project will be of great advantage to the University and the community as the use of FOSS is saving a lot of money on the porches of software. Giving the community an awareness of alternatives that they would otherwise never have received is a very important part of this project. This awareness is necessary to develop a future generation for the challenges that they have to meet.
