Hi there, My SVG editing skills aren't good, I've updated the SVG for the Portuguese-Portugal language, but it seems that the resulting PNGs will be smaller than the needed 160x90 size. Maybe you can generate the 3 PNG files from it, for me? I don't seem to have permissions to upload files on the wiki page, so I'm attaching the SVG here. Dear all, We just enabled English and French (had to do 70 pngs...). We'll do the language we speak and for existing ones, it's only 3 images to redo. Those languages are: - Portuguese-Brasil - Portuguese-Portugal - Spanish - Catalan - Serbian Cyrillic - Serbian Latin - Estonian - Arabic - Greek Then some languages have been done but not up to 83 days before SFD. Those are: - German - Ukrainian - Russian - Persian And then.. the others need to be done from scratch if needed. Thank you for your help in the matter. Fred

SFD 2021 registration soft opening

Dear all, We've opened registration and it seems to work. We'd be happy to get feedback if you register and have issues. I noticed Maceio (Brazil) and Bogota (Colombia) already created wiki pages. The wiki has been updated to allow automatic page creation and moved to HTTPS. Note that all graphics with http only will probably not be displayed in browser having strict SSL policy (which blocks mixed content). So be careful with that. In the meantime we probably will have to move away from Moinmoin later this year as support for python3 is far from here and doing an upgrade is going to be a headache. That means also rewriting the registration script (somehow a good thing considering its lack of features). Also we need to actively provide online platform information which are free software in order for people to run online events. So lots of little and big things. We'll attack countdowns and artwork in the coming week. Thank you for your patience. Regards, Fred

If it has reached to its goal, then it should be informed to the public. Otherwise, we should revive it. I think we need to educate people and governments to move towards Open Document Formats. We had small program two years ago in Iran. But we were the only one who did it. At least there was no post on social media about any group having any program on that day. We need a better way of communication. It is hard for me to track topics on mailing list.

I don't remember it now. But even now, I would refuse for that face our issue is not who to handle social media. I think we need to discuss why SFD and how. We need to make some policy or plan or guideline. Then comes social media, website, etc. One friend mentioned Open Source. I strongly believe SFD is the day we need to talk about Software Freedom. This is kind of prohibited concept to be discussed in Open Source world. Let's keep out focus on Software Freedom and inform people about the importance of it. Rest would be handled in one way or another. Regarding Covid, I think we had this discussion last year as well. Sure I am not advocating to have physical gathering. That is up to people. Last year, we had a small online gathering in Iran and I myself managed to have a physical gathering in Kabul, Afghanistan (which was safe at that time to do so). I know some other people also had online gathering. Sure online meeting cannot be the same as physical one, but it has it own pros and cons. So Lets embrace it and see how we can make best use of it. I don't suggest we tell people what to do. SFD should be community based program. At best, we can help with propagation, networking and (perhaps most important) provide some suggestions on how to have SFD 2021. SFD website has some kind of such material on it already, but those suggestions are not helpful now. We need to make some new ones.This is what we need to discuss. I would suggest having some attempt to talk to some of FLOSS organizations to provide some resources (like BBB) for SFD related programs (during september). That can be provided to those who already registered their program on SFD website so we can verify that they are going to hold SFD related programs. I am sure we can manage that. Even with limitted resources, we can make some schedule for registered programs so that those resources can be distributed among all without putting pressure on server. These are my rough ideas. And finally, we need to have some way to update site. website is outdated. it is still talking about SFD 2020! and one question: What about DFD and HFD 2021? I'm planning to do SFD 2021 online again this year. Last year I did it in conjunction with LibreMiami using Jitsi. We were the only ones who showed, but it was a lot of fun. I also had to run the event the week before the usual SFD date, so that and unclear communication of timezone differences may have prevented some people from attending. I advertised SFD on social media a lot last year. I shared the wiki link so people could find events they were interested in. I know the Computer Science Teachers Association was talking about Software Freedom Day after I brought up the subject. Don't know if any of them did private events for their students or attended some of the online world events. Was curious, for those who did something online last year, how was the turn out? Did any guests have trouble connecting to the event because they weren't sure when or where or for other reasons? I think doing things online for areas where the logistics of an in person gathering are an issue is a great idea. I also think doing it online allows more people from different areas to attend. Some conventions that moved online last year and are going back to doing it in person will continue to do a hybrid approach to reach people who can't travel to attend the event. If any of the various groups around the world want to coordinate so that people can go from one event in one timezone to another afterwards in another timezone, I think that would be a really nice idea. Recently attended a series of events on climate change online. They were all put on by different people and you signed up for each event. However, one web site organized it all and listed all the events with their descriptions so you could sign up for the ones you were interested in. It was really well done. It was also nice to be able to attend events hosted in other countries and find out about how things are there. Everyone having a shared goal was enough to bring the whole thing together. Would really like to see SFD do something similar. They wouldn't be responsible for the events, just for being a central place where people could learn about the events being hosted by various groups around the world and how to attend them. Previous years were very different in the sense that SFD was a face-to-face event led by communities around the world in their own areas. I think the community-led direction is still the right one, but face-to-face not much. We do not have the infrastructure or experience to do online events, nor should we be hosting an event for everyone online. With that in mind the question is how do we do SFD 2021(1) (as it seems most likely we'll be in the same situation as 2020) and how do we communicate about it(2)? 2 will be easier once 1 is clear. 1 options are: a. Face-to-face like before when it makes sense (does it?) b. A mix of online and face-to-face: probably we can define that as in a 2nd phase maybe. Or maybe it's an extension of "online only" SFD events where organizers can decide that meeting face to face is allowed up to x number of people (based on country/city/size of the venue) but that the event is mainly broadcasted.
