Can you tell me an alternative way so that before the cd's are sent back I can get them without the duty... what if PPL from neth can call DHL and tell them i've got 24 hrs. Hi Shashi, I had the similar problem abt couple of years back. The custom people spoke all the rules in the book. I went to the Addl Commissioner of Customs, chennai and argued that the CD's were absolutely free of charge and that has no implication of any duty charges. I won the battle and got the CD's about 15 days after the SFD 2006. In that process, our custom department people have lotted 2 T Shirts which i supposed that has been couriered to us by canonical. My Humblest suggestion is that, please give a try in getting the CD's, as returning it may have costing parameter to be paid by Canonical. In this process we can show our courage of battling corruption and imagine how much work would have gone in for Manufacturing and shipping the CD's to us from cannonical.You have to pay absolutely nothing for getting that CDs.Please dont give up the fight for your right. I have got nearly about 500 Cds and was told by the post man to pay the custom charges , eventually be waived off by the customs. Regards Thyagarajan Shanmugham

Dear Shashi, Every single package leaving China will have a sticker and a matching custom declaration stating that what we're shipping has no commercial value. Anything else has to do with your country customs and nothing with SFD. I myself do suffer from custom officers once in a while even if there is a sticker and the proper declaration. Ubuntu CDs We got weren't labelled as promotional materials.... We did not pay as the amount of custom duty was senslessly 10 times the cost of burning 15 images. Hope it's not the same case with the China Packages... Custom duty was charged on Ubuntu CDs

I ordered some Ubuntu Cds to distribute to my friends. The courier came today (DHL) and the courier person charged me 1300 Rs. for duty charges ($31). There was a thread in the list the other day to label the CDs as promotional materials it was not done! We rejected the Courier as we could not afford it.. We apologise for the trouble we caused to Canonical, I'm now downloading the Image and will burn it on 15 cd's that is 10 times cheaper! Hope the other package that is coming from China also does not go through this! I can't download t-shirts! Software Freedom Day 2008: shipments are on their way!

Hi SFD team leaders and other software freedom enthusiasts, Those of you who may (soon) be tuning in to the Olympics have another reason to be interested in achievements in China: our team supplies are as we speak making their way from China to all those team leaders who registered before the deadline and requested supplies. Frederic Muller <http://fred.dao2.com/>, a heroic SFI board member based in Beijing, has been working hard over the last few months to organise suppliers for the materials we are planning to send you and shipping to make sure it gets to you. With the support of his friends at the Beijing LUG, they have been collecting and packaging up the supplies in the last two weeks and shipping them to teams in 65 countries across the globe. Frederic has shipped the following supplies to teams: * at least 3 T-shirts * a bunch of stickers * a handful of button badges * a bunch of balloons * a small number of OpenDisc8.5 and OpenEducationDisc CDs The supplies have been shipped by EMS from China, with a maximum shipping time of 20 days to all countries. So those teams that registered before the deadline should be receiving team supplies before the end of August. While you're watching the Olympics, feel free to cheer on the Netherlands because that's where your team's Ubuntu CDs are being shipped from. Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu, and a sponsor of Software Freedom Day) is sponsoring the supply of CDs. Keep an eye out for these, they are being shipped this week and will be delivered by courier. If my programming skills stretch far enough, I'll be trying within the next week to send out automated emails to all 240-odd team leaders telling them what exactly will be in their shipments.
