Celebrated SFD today to coincide with Teacher's Day

Hi all, We decided to celebrate SFD today to co-incide with Teacher's Day .While one reason was that both the events talk so much about freedom and sharing, few others which were related to managing things (in short couldn't help it) It was a small low-profile event with about 50-60 odd people attending and having a good time. I would be putting up a detailed blog post on the same with pictures and everything in couple of days. SFD Team Philippines Members: Computer Professionals' Union, Txtpower.Org, Philippine PHP Users Group, Bayan Muna, UnPLUG, Imus Internet Cafe Association, Asia Source Pilipinas http://softwarefreedomday.org/teams/asiaandmiddleeast/Philippines/SFD2008 a. On the 17th of Sept - we are scheduled for a dialogue with legislators of the philippine congress. b. on the 20th of Sept - Rep. Teddy Casino of Bayan Muna Party list is joining us on SFD to express support and push for the FOSS Bill passage in the House of Representatives. c. We are expecting more than 1,000 students from Univ of makati alone. d. The morning session of SFD will be streaming on the web. A local TV channel (NBN TV) with web streaming capability committed to put the event online. e. The web streaming will allow at least 2 satellite provincial events to join the main event in Makati City. f. Our bandwidth is sponsored by Globe Telecoms (one of the 3 telco in the country) e. for our build-up, CP-Union is launching tomorrow the Software Freedom Tour in one of the university in the capital. It will be a series of visits to campuses. So far, we already have 3 campuses to visit. g. Rick Bahague of the CPU and coordinator of Software Freedom Day 2008 in the Philippines said that this event is only the start of a month long celebration leading up to a coordinated celebration of Software Freedom Day (SFD) on September 20, 2008. Running from 7:30 am in the morning up to 7:30 pm in the evening, more than 1500 students will have introductory lessons on alternatives to proprietary software. Divided into four sessions, the students will have introductions on OpenOffice Productivity Suite, Ubuntu GNU/Linux desktops and content management software (CMS) for websites. The FOSS marathon will be a non-technical forum introducing students to FOSS tools and philosophy. "These software are examples of high quality free open source software that are available to run in your computer for office and home use", said Bahague. He added that free and open source software is the affordable software alternative especially for a third world country like the Philippines. Support for the Open Source bill filed by Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casino in Congress will be solicited through an SMS support sign-up that will be launched during the event. The Software Freedom Tour 2008 includes exhibits and school events in Metro Manila and other provinces. More details can be found at www.cp-union.com. Software Freedom Day is a yearly celebration of Software Freedom and why it is important; our purpose is public education about these important issues.
