OOoCon is where representatives of all the community projects meet to celebrate and learn from the achievements of the past twelve months, and discuss how to meet the challenges of the next twelve. I suggest the following: If teams register it should be essential to add the number of team members and the potential size. I would start to deliver different packages. It does not make sense to ship the same ammount to a 30 people event as well as to a 600 people event. I also would suggest that teams can request different amounts of stuff per se. In our case T-Shirts werent that helpful because it is quite cold in northern germany in September (about 14-15 degrees centigrade). So one would wear that under other clothes. I would suggest to provide a CD or DVD that has stuff for presentations (open source movies, statistics, images, music, lectures ...). Otherwise people need to collect all that data. Maybe also provide some OpenOffice documents for printing out SFD marketing stuff. Maybe also provide some Vcards to contact SFD organizers - so alltogether a good mix. BTW I suggest to already now bringt 2009 content and day to http://softwarefreedomday.org/ - In Kiel we have the problem that as well as last year another open source event now already chose October - so information about the date needs to be available more than just a few months before september. BTW2. I managed to get the surge protection for the wiki activated. maybe your settings a re a bit too strong. regards, thilo

We are preparing DFD too. So, I think that the pack need only little change. T-shirt was all right, but i think that you have to increase the number. Baloon are useless. In the 08 we was in a High school of more of 1000 student and are all to old for baloon. Hello. Germany speaking... ;-) In our case we could have dispensed the balloons. As we hadn't an event inside but a little booth there was no need for it. We also are going to celebrate DFD this year, it might be better to have two or three posters (A2 or so) to bring it on some windows. Last year we did this posters ourselves. In my opinion the CDs could be only for download and copying locally. Maybe then there is a chance to get some more T-Shirts which were really loved by the team members and the customers. Just my 2 cents. Schwags this year

Dear all, We've been starting to prepare for SFD'09 and we would like to know if there is anything that we could add/replace in the schwags we're sending out that could be more helpful for your team to prepare the event this year. We of course do have a limited budget, but it would be nice to get some feedback about how to possibly improve our support. SFD planet hackergotchi

Hi everybody, A new year has started (well a month ago for most of us, right now for Chinese and in a few months for others...). SFI works on the Gregorian Calendar and we have started preparing for Software Freedom Day 2009. As we mentioned earlier in a response to João Nunes from Portugal, SFD is organized on the third Saturday of September and it will be a Saturday 19th this year. There are a few things we will want to get your input on and we will get back to this probably in the coming week. At the moment we're ironing out the website and I have been looking at our Planet (http://planet.softwarefreedomday.org) I noticed a lot of missing hackergotchi's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackergotchi) and it'd be really nice if people on the planet could send me links to their hackergotchi's so we can have a more colorful and personal planet. Publicity Officer required for Software Freedom International

Hi SFD'ers, Software Freedom International (SFI), the organisation behind Software Freedom Day, is gearing up for SFD 2009 and is currently seeking the services of a Publicity Officer. The position offers the opportunity to serve a community of over 500 team leaders and thousands more software freedom enthusiasts, as well as gain exposure and experience in developing the public profile of Software Freedom Day. Like all positions at SFI, this is a voluntary position with no remuneration apart from reimbursement of approved costs. SFI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit company registered in New Hampshire, USA. We have been organising SFD since 2004 and have supported events in over 90 countries since then. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.... The chosen candidate may be appointed to the board of SFI, but in any case will be required to join in SFI's regular board meetings (which take place every 1-2 weeks via IRC or telephone). The specific responsibilities of the role are: * Manage all written publicity materials * Coordinate the SFD competition * Arrange an editorial team to develop the SFD website * Plan and manage the translation of materials into other languages * Draw up and execute a plan for promoting SFD through the web, media and other channels. The ideal candidate will have an excellent command of English and a demonstrated ability to write creative and targeted copy for press releases. They will work alongside the SFI team, and particularly with the technical director, media & design officer and the sponsorship officer. Particular sensitivity to the requirements of SFD teams - who operate across many time zones, in varying socio-economic and cultural environments, and in dozens of languages - will be essential. The successful candidate will be invited to work with SFI until December 2009 and possibly beyond that. HOW TO LET US KNOW THAT YOU'RE INTERESTED...
