Date of SFD 2011?

Hello All, Perhaps this is too soon to ask, but we here in Singapore were a bit tardy in our planning. The result is that we were unable to reserve the National Library Building's larger, well-appointed (and most importantly) air-conditioned presentation rooms. Hi, I'm Paulo, from Brazil :-) I have some suggestions for the future. I'm note sure with you know the event called "Festival Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre (FLISoL)" (in spanish). It's very similar to SFD because It happens in many cities of Latin America in one day per year (april). But the focus is to promote "install fests" where volunteers install free softwares in computers. We can install all OS GNU/Linux or some free softwares at Windows. Like SFD, is very usually the cities have speakers to talk about something. Also, It's a free event (no costs). It's very usually the same time organise FLISOL in april and SFD in september :-) But now, we have more times at FLISOL than SFD in Brazil. Well, I like very much the FLISOL site because there is a menu with links per country. So, the master site is in spanish, but brazilians can see easily the link "Brasil" and read in portuguese. And in the Brazil page, we can see all cities where there is a time. I prefer see the times per country than all in one page like SFD. Fred told me we can help to translate the wiki. 'T'would really help to know what the argument from your opponent is. That said, why have public libraries? Shouldn't people buy books? Why have freedom of speech? (Preventing Glen Beck from opening his mouth, does have a certain appeal, but it would shut down Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert as well.) Why allow science when we have religion? Galileo and Darwin are dangerous! I would expect someone in the library business to be more in tune with the concept of both gratis and libre. And, if it's fear of the unknown, then why have computers, recordings, or anything else in a library that was not hand-transcribed by a monk with a quill? The printing press is a tool of the devil! Does the library contain any books on FOSS? Here is why: * We are the only team in Manchester that has expressed an interest in running a SFD event. * More, we are the only team in North West England, which has a population of 6,853,200 according to Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_West_England * We have been bringing the various interested parties in Manchester together for an event. This is much better than having separate events. The event is run like a bazaar, with stalls having different aspects of free software. People can then cross pollinate. The number of people who are into free software yet still don't know about SFD is unbelievable. MFS and FFSUK have been doing their best to advertise SFD around the UK but it is still surprising when you tell someone who is really into free software about SFD and they say they've never heard of it. After they know about SFD then they get really into it. Next year it would be good to have: * the registration open early (rather than really late like this year) * a stable wiki (rather than the various wiki issues like this year) * better advertising, including by the Sponsors and Supporters. (rather than little and late advertising I've experienced this year even by the Sponsors and Supporters!) * a pack containing T-shirts, balloons, stickers, OpenDisc, FSF recommended distros <http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html> (rather just Ubuntu CDs like this year) Back to organising SFD 2010 in Manchester.
