There is this notion and pride that GNU/Linux should run anywhere, but like the rest of technology and things, it really doesn't and is best to buy whatever hardware you need. For people that wants to try a Mac they have to buy a whole system, but the GNU/Linux people sometimes they have it better. Sometimes is a network dongle, some other times is a soundboard, but in the end the goal is to understand that like any other technology people should try to make an effort to make it easy for technology to run. So my advice always is, have you thought on getting new hardware. Some people don't agree with this method for some weird reason, because for other things, they see no problem into trying the same solution. Hey! That's quite a coincidence: we actually have a similar gathering in Beijing, every 1st Saturday of the month which we call Coding for Fun, but happens to be a mixed bag of GNU/Linux support and install helpdesk as well as coding and hacking on FOSS software and hardware. We've been running it in one of our member's beautiful office for the past 2 years and it has become a cornerstone of what we do. Something WLUG have been running for about the last four years is a monthly "Saturday Workshop" This is similar to an installfest, but much more regular. The first Saturday of each month we set up tables, power and network and people can bring their computers along and help each other solve any problems or just talk about what they've been doing or discovered lately. I aquired a damaged iBook a while back and if I can sort out an LCD panel for it I intend to put PPC ubuntu on. I'll document how it goes, and the solution to any issues as I find them for the benefit of others. The last PPC I put Ubuntu on was quite a few years back and although it took a bit of figuring out to make it work, I was very happy with the results. Hi Don, I didn't want to hijack your other thread so I'm replying here. Some have already made very good recommendations, but having been through the same troubles I remember that I finished my installation at my local GNU/Linux User Group. I am lucky enough to have a strong group nearby and one guy took the machine home and fixed what was not working. Do you happen to have the same opportunity? SFD is not really a place for GNU/Linux support but if we can get you going I'm sure everyone will be happy. Thanks. Hi! Taking your message within the context of your former post and installs problems I can sympathize. I too, have a PPC Macbook and it's running Linux. There were a few quirks during the installation, notably with the multimedia side of the machine. Now what SFD is focusing on, is about reaching out to non-users of Free Software, and that can start with running FOSS applications on their proprietary OS. So in some ways we should be explaining what is Software Freedom and why it matters, then wait for our audience to ask us what to do next (rather than "forcing" them to a most likely not successful GNU/Linux adventure). I believe a migration path should be as smooth as possible and people should do it because they understand and care, not because it's hype or gratis. I'm just wondering what are doing the 2-300 team leaders of last year? Have they already forgotten about Software Freedom, did they celebrate because of the free Sun or SFD stuff (and then what good is it to send stuff to people who only care when they are freebies)? There are some important points addressed in the post and we would like to hear from you on the subject. you can either comment directly at the bottom of the article or reply on sfd-discuss list. I know you're all busy with the preparations, looking at my web counter I see I have 20h and 10min left to SFD (the counter is local now, and calculating SFD at Sept. 18th 9am).
