Also for READMEs, LICENSE files and similar project files. Doesn't look like the Kielux team is going to participate in DFD this year, but I hope that those who do will succeed in raising awareness of the problems of closed formats. Document Freedom Day: Empowering the Digital World with Open Standards

The Document Foundation wrote an interesting article called "Document Freedom Day: Empowering the Digital World with Open Standards", in preparation for DFD 2025. I'm not going to reproduce it here entirely, but allow me a TLDR: * DFD is important; * If you organize a DFD event and get in touch with them, they can provide stickers on LibreOffice and Open Document Format. Hi All! I too appreciate a good CSV! Been using them for years as flat-file databases on small websites. Two of my favorite open formats are OGG and PNG. Ogg Vorbis (video) and Theora(audio) are terrific alternatives to other media container formats. Thanks to the foresight of Xiph.org we have these excellent public standards! My absolute favorite open document format is the Portable Network Graphics raster graphics file format. It is an all-purpose file format that is great for the web because it supports transparency, lossless compression, animation (APNG), and tons of colors. PNG also supports loading smaller, low-resolution versions of an image for low-bandwidth connections to the network. Mmm... I really enjoy the simplicity of CSV when parsing open datasets. For commenting, I enjoy using MarkDown (though I'm not really sure that's an open standard - though it factually is) LibreOffice is my go-to for everything document related. I've got word that FreeCAD is looking to better document their file format so other CAD software can also implement that. Looking forward to see that format propagate... Have you tried asking them? I'm not thrilled with Slack as a forum, but they do have a lot of discussion going on via Slack channels. They also have an online forum: https://forum.openfoodfacts.org/ Plus, they seem to have monthly virtual discussions. You could contact them directly by email or through any of these options. They may be able to give you more details about their app and their design choices. Personally, I think their database is much more impressive than the app. It's Open so anyone can use it for research, projects, etc.

I don't know - their app has tripled in size recently, so I had to uninstall it from my old device to keep at least *some* space open for taking photos...There wasn't even a changelog or reason given, just the odd increase in install size to 250 MB (from 80). The anti-features that f-droid lists may stem from the actual usage scenario... but I'll just keep reading the ingredients lists instead. Open Food Facts

If anyone's planning a Document Freedom Day or Software Freedom Day event in Europe and especially if you're in France and you need some guest speakers, I believe the Open Foods Facts project ( https://world.openfoodfacts.org/ ) could be a great resource. They're working with an Open database and have Free software including an app. They're project is about transparency with food and cosmetic products throughout the world. If you're in an area where there are Open Food Facts volunteers, they can give a talk about their project at a DFD or SFD event. Some of the Open Foods Facts volunteers organize events as well, so a joint DFD or SFD event with an Open Food Facts event might be a possibility. If you're interested, you can connect with someone at the Open Food Facts project at support(a)openfoodfacts.org or let me know and I can make some introductions. Want to register a local event for Document Freedom Day 2025? Here are some tips: If you don't already have an account on the digitalfreedoms.org site (not the same as the SFD site), register here: https://digitalfreedoms.org/log-in?view=registration Once registered and logged in, look at the Document Freedom Day menu near the top left of this page: https://digitalfreedoms.org/ The menu appears when you mouse over the first instance of the words Document Freedom Day. If you're holding your event at a new location, be sure to use the Add Location option. Click on Add Event in the menu to add the information to let people know about your event. To spark some interest for Document Freedom Day, I would like to put together some articles and posts about various topics related to the Free interchange of documents and other media formats. Please share your thoughts. What topics of interest regarding Free formats or Free content would you like to see discussed? On a related note, Public Domain Day was January 1st. archive.org is having a free virtual event to celebrate: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/singin-in-the-public-domain-public-domain-day-… It's vital to have Free methods of sharing documents and media, but it helps to have entertaining Free content as well.
