Hi Jurgen Peace be upon you. From you email I am a bit curious about the role. I am Shazedur Rahim Joardar (Ring). As to describe myself in very short – I am a GNU/Linux enthusiast who also loves cooking. I am an IT professional with 22+ year of experience in GNU/Linux deployment, maintenance and end-user support. Resolving daily 15+ on-site and remote support to Debian/Ubuntu/OracleLinux/Alma/Rocky. I am an user of GNU/Linux based systems with Free software since 1999 and started my career with an ISP in Dhaka as a part-time technical support in 2003. Later I had join NIIT and achieved a 2 years Diploma in IT major in Software Engineering in 2005. From October 2014 to December 2016 worked as an Adjunct Faculty member at Software Engineering Department in Daffodil International University at Dhaka, Bangladesh. I had shared my knowledge on Modern Operating Systems and Database among the pupils. Moreover I had frequently conducted various hardware and software hacking sessions and FOSS events for the pupils. Besides my work, I love to contribute to the society by helping people using GNU/Linux distributions and free software as a member of various Bengali and International online forum sites. Help us grow Software Freedom Day – Call for new board members

Hi all, Over the past two years, you may have noticed a renewed energy around Software Freedom Day and, to a lesser extent, our other Digital Freedom Foundation events. This has been a deliberate effort — one we’re proud of, but we also know it’s just the beginning. To keep the momentum going (and to grow sustainably), we’re looking for a few extra hands to help with coordination — and possibly to join the board of the Digital Freedom Foundation. We believe that healthy growth means bringing in new voices regularly. By expanding the board, we: * Prevent burnout for existing members * Avoid consolidating too much influence in one place * Ensure smoother transitions when people eventually step down * Encourage fresh ideas and perspectives * Maintain continuity for our community and sponsors * Build resilience and avoid a situation where things grind to a halt due to lack of volunteers We’re especially interested in people who are passionate about software freedom, have a global outlook, and are willing to commit some time to helping the movement thrive. Personally, I’m aiming to reduce my active role by the end of 2025 — but I will only do so if we’ve successfully welcomed and onboarded new board members. So consider this both an open invitation and a gentle call for succession planning. If you’re curious, interested, or just want to talk more about what it would involve, don’t hesitate to reach out. The It's FOSS community bulletin board mentioned this web site: https://endof10.org/ They're organizing events all over the world and trying to get groups together to help people with computers that can't upgrade to Windows 11 to install a Linux operating system. This might be a great opportunity to partner with one of these groups and have an install fest at a local Software Freedom Day celebration.

virtual planning meeting

I contacted the Free Software Foundation to try to see if there was anyone in my area interested in helping to plan or attend a local Software Freedom Day event. They're trying to renew support for their local groups for the FSF 40 celebration. I think this would be a great opportunity to join forces between local FSF groups and SFD organizers and a chance to celebrate both occasions. The FSF is trying to revitalize local groups in my area, so I told someone at the FSF that I would host a virtual planning meeting for my local area and see if anyone would like to attend. The virtual meeting is May 31st, 2025 at 11 AM Eastern via Jitsi: https://meet.jit.si/SoftwareFreedomDay The agenda is to brainstorm ideas for SFD, FSF 40 and to talk about Free Software in general. I realize most SFD list members aren't near each other or near me, but if anyone would like to attend and brainstorm ideas or just talk about Free Software in general, you're welcome to join the virtual meeting.

Hi Luna, absolutely! This way, local teams can organize creative events during Software Freedom Day. And given some events are a few weeks later (e.g. the academic years starts in the beginning of October in Sri Lanka, and this way they can also participate). So you can reach out to artists beforehand, and also use the occasion to organize workshops in blender, Krita, Inkscape, etc... during the event. How great would it be if one of your participants won a prize? Software Freedom Day 2025 - where to recruit help

Thought we could brainstorm ideas about where to find help if you're planning to organize a Software Freedom Day event this year. It's great to have a local group or team to work with. Not all of us do. If the thought of doing it all alone is holding you back, here are some possible ideas on where to find other participants. Members of Ubuntu LoCo teams have spoken to some of the DFF members about the possibility of working together to revitalize local teams and celebrate SFD2025 together. If you'd like to check if there's an active Ubuntu LoCo team in your area or would like to help revitalize one, the most recommended contact method seems to be through their Discourse site: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/c/locos/129 The Free Software Foundation is trying to put together LibreLocal meetups to honor the FSF's 40th anniversary. This might be a great opportunity for a joint FSF and SFD celebration. The FSF and LibrePlanet have a page about it here: https://libreplanet.org/wiki/FSF40/meetups They can also help connect you with groups in your area or help publicize if you want to start one. I spoke to some members of the Open Foods Facts project ( https://blog.openfoodfacts.org/en/ ). Members of their organization live all over the world and some offer to do guest talks at their local FOSS events. See their web site for contact information. They also have a Slack community: https://slack.openfoodfacts.org/ and monthly virtual meetings online. LibreOffice has local groups. Some of them joined us to celebrate Document Freedom Day 2025. There's always a chance they may have a group in your area. Do you have a local Linux group, Users group, MakerSpace or other organization in your area that might be interested in volunteering to help with Software Freedom Day? You can find many groups listed on Mastodon, Get Together, Mobilizon, EventBrite, Meetup, Facebook, Discord, Slack, etc. Know of other resources for locating people interested in FLOSS who may want to volunteer to help out with a Software Freedom Day event?
