Re: [SFD-discuss] Software Freedom Day - Sri Lanka
by Rik Tindall
Hello SFD global,
Perhaps we should just use every opportunity available to promote FOSS
promotion day?
e.g. Here in Christchurch, New Zealand, we have use of a local library
computer lab, so can advertise SFD on the city council's website events
system:
https://www.ccc.govt.nz/news-and-events/find-a-learning-opportunity/show/17…
Good luck for tomorrow, and growing Software Freedom.

For some extend I agree, but as we are in the ground level yet, there are
more we need to focus than boycotting, (I know that is not what was said)
IMO worrying on such stuffs makes no scene at all.
Therefore, for the time being never mind what ever it is, just use the best
media to reach the people, that is the most important thing !
Facebook event page is not THE event page I guess, use the other link
instead.
BUT in the context here, facebook is the BEST media. So use it to reach the
audience.
My 2 cents !!!

Agree,
Let's try to call participant on our own platform,
foss.lk revamping and we just hosted foss.lk/forum, maybe next time we
would be able to go through that.

Beg your pardon. I too found Facebook inappropriate. I know, it is a
different topic. Since you are already involved in Open Source, the
next step is to get informed about what the "big four" are doing,
from data mining, surveillance, breaking anti-competitive law to
political manipulation in big scale. (I dare not start those topics
here, that'll explode. There are other sources and pl. take your time.

I am not totally against use facebook to call people to the SFD.
In my opinion, what is wrong is use only Facebook as a main page.

SFD 2018
by LM
I'm dismayed that our area won't be participating in SFD this year. I
organized something at the library last year. We had a small but
enthusiastic turn-out since the area was still recovering from a
hurricane at the time. I was not able to organize anything this year.
I asked several programming groups in the area if they were going to
do anything for Software Freedom Day and none were interested.
Thought that was rather disappointing since all of those groups
regularly use FLOSS software.
Could use some suggestions on how to find other FLOSS activists in
one's area. The various local computer meetups and slack groups do
not seem to be a good place to find people interested in actively
promoting FLOSS. If anyone's in the South Florida area or knows
anyone in that area that would like to do something for SFD (this year
or in future years), please let me know.
Will probably celebrate SFD this year on my own virtually by updating
my Open Source Resource page ( http://www.distasis.com/cpp/pbtc.htm )
and/or playing some entertaining and educational FLOSS games. Hope
everyone has a great time this Software Freedom Day.

Celebrate "Software Freedom Day" and use Facebook as the main page seem to be very wrong to me.
